Obama’s Government Report: Guantanamo is Humane and Abides by Geneva Conventions

President Obama in one of his first actions in office ordered the closure of the terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay. He also ordered an in-depth study of the prison camps to decipher whether the terrorists and alleged terrorists at Gitmo are properly treated and that U.S. troops are abiding by the Geneva Conventions.

The report, part of which was leaked today, shows that Gitmo “complies with the humanitarian requirements of the Geneva conventions” and that the prisoners are treated with dignity. A Pentagon official, who spoke anonymously, said that it showed that the Bush administration created a humane detention camp that has been unfairly characterized by critics. Speaking of the remaining 245 detainees there, this official said the report underscored that if the men are moved, they may “go from a humane environment to a less humane environment,” according to the New York Times.

Well, well, well. As we at Move America Forward have been saying, President Obama has stepped in it. He has no plans for these dangerous beasts and, un til he ordered his Attorney General to visit gitmo, he had made no efforts to know the truth about what happens at the state-of-the art prison.

MAF visited Guantanamo Bay over the Christmas holidays and saw firsthand the living conditions of these prisoners, who have committed acts of terrorism or battled against America and her allies in the war on terror.

I saw the exercise yards with elliptical equipment; learned about the six meal plans from which these detainees choose their weekly meals; saw the interrogation rooms for the hardest terrorists that have cushy, overstuffed couches; viewed the high-quality flatscreen televisions the terrorists watch on their nightly movie nights; and observed the play yards where groups of detainees played soccer together. Throughout the prisons, arrows are painted on the floor so when the prisoners are called to prayer five times a day (all prisoners are Muslim), they know where Mecca is.

The prison is climate-controlled and each prisoner has a doctor and an orderly and nurse, better health care than our troops and the American taxpayers who foot the bill for these terrorists.

So it is no surprise to me that the Obama’s report shows that the terrorists and suspected enemy combatants are living in appropriate quarters and in good conditions. The attacks on the Bush Adminstration were hogwash from ignorant people.
The report did find that prsoners should spend more time out of their cells, but I saw a lot of freedom at Gitmo.

The review, conducted by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, describes a series of steps that could be taken to allow detainees to speak to one another more often and to engage in group activities, the government officials said. For years, critics of the prison have said that many detainees spend as many as 23 hours a day within the confines of cement cells and were only permitted recreation alone in fenced-off outdoor pens.

The report, which Admiral Walsh is scheduled to discuss publicly at the Pentagon next week, is being presented to a White House that some government officials have described as caught off guard by the extreme emotions and political cross-currents provoked by Guantánamo. Some critics said that the report’s conclusions are likely to intensify the debate about the prison, and put the Obama White House for the first time in the position of defending it.

As I said above, the detainees spend plenty of time outside of their cells. The most compliant get to be out of their cells for hours upon hours, playing foosball, soccer and exercising. They also take art and English classes.

The Obama adminstration better believe they are going to feel pressure and heat from those of us who know the truth about Gitmo. MAF has produced a commercial which you can see here.

There is no logic behind closing gitmo. It is safe and humane, as Obama’s report shows.

There is no logic behind anything that the Obama administration has done yet. Except to position themselves for having more power!

I can actually see Obama’s logic in closing it. It has become a symbol and a rallying point. If you close it, it takes that away.

Doesn’t mean in a time of war we can’t reestablish it.

What you do with the prisoners is a different issue. Hopefully, Obama won’t just set them free.

Very dangerous to do so.

It's not good logic to close it because the liberals choose to make it a faux symbol of cruelty and a rallying point to feed the MSM to make America look bad.

I strongly disagree with you and Present Obama and the liberal socialist America haters that want it closed because they don't believe these people are dangerous.

You are being naive. The terrorists attacked us long before there was a Guantanamo Bay prison. They just hate us for our freedoms and way of life.

I hope you don't mind me providing a bit of news analysis. I call it: Gitmo complies with Geneva: al Qaeda's lawyers slam Bam, Pentagon report

Click the image to watch a 30-second slide show about Guantanamo Bay No less than the New York Times reports:

A Pentagon report requested by President Obama on the conditions at the Guantánamo Bay detention center concludes that the prison complies with the humanitarian requirements of the Geneva conventions, but it makes many recommendations for increasing human contact among the prisoners, according to two government officials who have read portions of it. ... The review, requested by President Obama [emphasis added mine] on the second day of his administration, is due to be delivered to the White House this weekend.
Unsurprisingly, the Times editorialized in its news report and accused the current administration of ordering a report, with a predictable outcome, to further its political agenda:
The request, made as part of a plan to close the center within a year, was widely seen as an effort by the new administration to defuse the power of allegations during the Bush administration that there were widespread abuses at Guantánamo, and that many detainees were suffering severe psychological effects after years of isolation.
"Widely seen" by whom? The obvious answer is widely seen by the editors at the Times and al Qaeda's lawyers. Yet the hilarious part the Times saved for the end, one of those lawyers slamming President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder:
“This is really running the risk that the review is just a big whitewash,” [a lawyer for Guantánamo detainees at the Center for Constitutional Rights Gitanjali] Gutierrez added, “and we expect more of the new administration.”
In law offices big and small across the nation, 500 lawyers must be hyperventilating into small brown paper bags.
