WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior Democratic lawmaker will push legislation this year to repeal a U.S. ban on Internet gambling that has hurt trade ties with the European Union, a congressional aide said.
"The bill introduction should happen in the next month," a spokesman for House of Representatives Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank said.
On Thursday, Reuters reported the EU could file a complaint about U.S. enforcement of the gambling ban at the World Trade Organization.
"Mr. Frank will bring back legislation to repeal the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act)," the spokesman said, referring to a Republican-crafted bill passed in 2006 when the party controlled Congress and the White House.
Supporters of the ban argued offshore Internet gambling websites take billions of dollars out the U.S. economy, damage families and serve as vehicles for money laundering.

Senior Eunuch of D.C. keeps creating problems.
Only so they could tax the winnings at 70%
Exactly. In everything the Dems do, there’s always a tax angle. Always.
Bawny Fwank also said that the mortgage bailout is not about homeowners.. it’s about the property tax system.
In this case, it’s pretty clear: the (potential) tax money went to Aruba.
Democrats never meet a sin they don’t like.
“Supporters of the ban argued offshore Internet gambling websites take billions of dollars out the U.S. economy, damage families and serve as vehicles for money laundering.”
Aw bull$hit. congress was just pissed they couldn’t get the offshore companies to tax winnings. The republicans were wrong. Can’t believe I agree with this pillow biter but go barney. You’re right on this one.
I do not care how people waste their money, because it is their money. Let's just not have to bail them out. I do not care if someone is upside down investing in real estate or upside down investing in a card game. It is all the same.
...with no deduction for losses.
Politicians love gambling when they’re the house. Pick a state and go to their lottery website. Sickening array of bad games. But that’s okay because the gov’t gets their cut.
This might be true, but it's more like a passenger complaining that someone spilled water on the dance floor five minutes after the ship struck the iceberg.
As it is, if the worry is about billions of dollars being taken out of the economy, compare that to the trillions being taken out now. And it's a bit late in history to be complaining about damage to families. That argument needed to be fought for about the time prayer in schools was declared Unconstitutional.
Money laundering? HA! Let's see how much is recovered from Swiss Banks and the banks Madoff and Stanford used.
SCREW the EU ans WTO.
If they're for something then it's BAD for the USA. Not to mention this repeal is Bawney Fawg's idea. He's never dome a thing that was pro USA, ever..
Plus, has everyone forgot that this little Republic of ours was formed to GET AWAY from the despots of Europe and all their 'rules'.
To all the Anti Smoking NAZIS who 'Gamble' -- Hardy-har-hah, how do YOU like it now. The 'foot is on the other shoe'.
(there is no 'Right to Gamble' in the Constitution)
The Mayor of Vegas took Fwank-n-Fwiends to task because they chided CEO’s about taking trips to Vegas.
Barney’s way of bending them over the woodpile. This is mean to hurt Vegas’ bottom-line.
Barney got it right! But will Republican Bible-Thumpers in the Senate filibuster it to death?
I hope not.
We need no more Queens in our government
