Cal’s Surprising Suggestion: ‘I Wish The Palins Would Leave The Stage For Awhile’
FinkelBlog ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 02/21/2009 5:01:15 PM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

You might think that Cal Thomas, as a cultural conservative, would be among the least likely of pundits to call on Sarah Palin to get out of the spotlight for the time being. But Thomas did just that on Fox News Watch this evening.

The topic at hand was Greta Van Susteren’s interview of Bristol Palin, and the way the MSM focused on Bristol’s comment that abstinence “is not realistic at all.” Cal was displeased that our culture treats having a child before or after marriage as morally equivalent choices. But his call for “the Palins”—which would clearly include Sarah as well as Bristol— to get out of the limelight, seemed to go beyond the subject of out-of-wedlock childbearing.

First off, SHE wasn’t on the ballot as a stand alone, so it was McCain who lost. One on one against Biden, she’d have had a far greater shot at VP. Secondly, you’re forgetting something else, and that being the media is keeping her more in the spotlight for the purposes of harming her for 2012, not to sing her praises, so a lot of that is simply out of her control. But either way, she’s our most prominent Governor now, she’s not an ex-politician, and she’s not going away anytime soon unless she resigns and moves to an igloo in the suburbs of Nome.

Palin/Romney, now you are on to something. Although I would prefer Romney/Palin.

I do not want to see anyone, male or female, rushed into marriage. No one has to do that to please me. I am sorry that the world is not perfect, and all of the people in it.

Stewart should’ve worn a piece on TNG. If they have warp drive but can’t cure male-pattern baldness 400 years in the future, that’s just pathetic.

How nasty to brand an infant with a stigma when the infant had no say in the matter. That was disgusting.

If you are pro-life, then you support the birth of the baby as bringing life into the world. Frankly it is none of our business whether she married him or not. It is her business. I would rather she have the baby and be a single Mom then rush into marriage because she was pregnant. Poor reason to get married.

I agree that the media is rolling her, but she’s letting them do it, even helping them. If she wants to have any chance in 2012, she’s got to get off the log now, before she goes under.

Why would an accomplished Conservative Governor like Sarah Palin run with a Socialist failure like Slick Willard ?

She doesn’t control the media. Asking any Republican to control the media is like asking them to control the Democrat party. The media knows she is the lead candidate for 2012, and they’re not going to let up.

Having a baby out of wedlock is not the right thing to do but then Adam and Eve's son was a murderer and they went on with a fairly decent life.

I think that she was speaking not from her personal experience or personal beliefs but from her knowledge of the culture that she has grown up in.

Anyone who thinks that “teaching abstinence” is a silver bullet to the unmarried pregnancy problem is not factoring in that teenage sexual activity is promoted and made very appealing in song, film, tv and even by our educators.

No, she doesn’t control the media, but she doesn’t need to play into their hands, either. She could have discouraged her daughter from doing the interview. She could limit the interviews that she does with national correspondents. She could focus on running the Alaska state government instead of defending her performance in the election. She’s just feeding them material, and frankly, I don’t think it’s unintentional. Her supporters could also help her out by not trying to do the hero worship thingy that the Clintons are so good at.

THANK YOU! My sentiments exactly. How many people on here starting with the article by Thomas that are bashing Sarah are Romney people?

Having unprotected sex or any sex at all with that jerk sperm donor was a poor choice by Palin’s daughter. Marrying him would probably be a another bad choice. She is lucky to have a supportive mom and dad, but they should not be too supportive of her poor choice.

What this a**hat doesn’t realize, or ignores, is that Palin is not flinging herself into the limelight, but is being thrust into it by the MSM, so they can discredit her!

You can educate girls all you want to but sometimes they do what they want to do no matter what parents, etc have tried to teach them. There is such a thing as peer pressure. Believe me I know what I am talking about since my extended family have had 4 pregnant teens. 2 got married but I do not see that happening to the other 2. Heck, I just love them the same. Everyone makes mistakes and we all have done so.

I love listening to old cowboy western music and realized that girls do not have heroic models to copy. Everything is if it feels good, then do it. I love my child and teen idols such as Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Pat Boone, etc. There were millions of others just like me who wanted Roy and Dale to be our parents. They are family heroes to my family for what they did for one of my nephews. And, don’t get me started on the stupid clothes that teens and younger kids are wearing these days. We would have been sent home if we had on junk like that. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes.
