Gov. David A. Paterson's former chief of staff, who resigned last year after revelations he failed to pay his taxes for five years, will return to a voluntary leadership position with the governor's 2010 campaign.
Rumors had swirled that Paterson may be about to rehire Charles O'Byrne, who resigned Oct. 24 following news reports of the tax debt. O'Byrne's hopes for political survival deteriorated after his lawyers revealed the debt was nearly $300,000 - $100,000 more than he originally disclosed - and that he had only paid it off within that week.
The situation went beyond the governor's control when O'Byrne's lawyer offered a widely ridiculed explanation, saying he was afflicted by "late-filing syndrome," a condition he said was brought on by depression and that made it difficult for O'Byrne to fill out his returns.
Last night, Paterson released this statement: "Yesterday evening, I met with Charles O'Byrne to discuss the possibility of us working together again. Charles is very much enjoying his new career and has offered to work as a volunteer in a leadership position with my 2010 campaign."
An openly gay former Jesuit priest with close ties to the Kennedy family, O'Byrne, 49, was Paterson's most trusted adviser and confidant inside the administration, having worked for Paterson for several years in various capacities.
