Oscar's inconvenient truths: Never let the facts get in the way of winning an award
New York Post ^ | February 22, 2009 | Kyle Smith

Tonight's Oscars will celebrate only-in-the-movies fantasy figures like Wall-E and the Joker . . . and Harvey Milk and Richard Nixon. Even when Hollywood is dealing with documented reality, it can't resist turning it into a cartoon.

I see old horse-face decided to come as Cinderella. Love to hear her take on the stimulus package, since she complained a few years ago that her family might need welfare, despite her making millions for no discernible reason.

Only four of the Oscars go to actors. The rest go to various craftsman who are highly educated in their field.

I know FReepers were eschwing the Oscars, but we should have started a snarky thread. Ben Stiller is hillarious right now making fun of Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman.

Yep. The only thing we MIGHT hold onto and the left will deny, is that Milk was a Repblican. So was Martin Luther King. So was Frederick Douglas, after whom my college dining hall was named.

Contrast that to Democtat black leaders: Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, John Conyers...what is wrong whith this picture?

I’m with you watching the show and it IS a different approach. Jackman is one talented SOB.

Err, Jerry Lewis just got the humanitarianism award and the slobs wouldn’t stand up for him after all the work he’s done for MDA for forty plus years. This crop of Hollywood definitely lacks class, intelligence and understanding.

Whassup? This is the first time you’ve not piped up for the Oscars. If you’re ill I hope you get back on that horse and ride, pilgrim. You’re missing so much gay-hugging multiculturalism.

I haven't seen any of the nominated movies. Can't really tell many of the performers apart. Have better things to do.

Frankly, I’ve always thought that Jerry has done the marthons because he has always played less than fully competent characters. He is also an arrogant SOB. So needless to say I am not a fan. But I do disagree that the audience did not give him props. He got a standing ovation.

I have not either. I DO know that my father and his girfriend walked out of of Slumdog and somehow they got free tickets, too comlicated to go into and not relevant). Anyway, they walked out. They said it was too depressing.

Some see “Frost/Nixon” as a call for the trial of George W. Bush, and “Milk,” which retells the story of the defeat of the anti-gay Prop. Six, is called a powerful plea against Prop. Eight, the anti-gay marriage measure that passed in California - three weeks before the movie came out.

On the red carpet Frank Langella said he came to like Nixon. Could be BS. Who knows?

I always love how these jerks continue to lecture others on how one should think. These are the so-called ‘open minded’ but don’t you dare disagree with them!

******

Dustin Lance Black’s emotional Oscar Acceptance Speech for Original Screenplay for his work on MILK can be read below.

“Oh my God. This was, um, this was not an easy film to make. First off, I have to thank Cleve Jones and Anne Kronenberg and all the real-life people who shared their stories with me. And, um, Gus Van Sant, Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco and our entire cast, my producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, everyone at Groundswell and Focus for taking on the challenge of telling this life-saving story.

When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life. It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and then maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married.

I wanna thank my mom, who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally, across this great nation of ours.

Thank you. Thank you. And thank you, God, for giving us Harvey Milk”.

If you’ve seen the work he’s put into them as I have over the years I wouldn’t be so quick to write Jerry Lewis off as using the Muscular Dystrophy telethons to further a stopped career. He did that because that’s where his heart moved him.

Yeah, he’s eccentric, egotistical and can’t help saying what he sees as the truth at times. Did you consider all the physical pain, addiction to pain medications, the pain of kicking them while still in pain, getting a weird thyroid disease , etc. as to why the guy might just see things differently than you or I? People forget he was the primary backer of Sammy Davis when that performer thought he should stop trying. Jerry’s also cited by many comedians as taking the time to come backstage and reassure them while they were starting out.

I didn’t see anyone standing. I saw an old soldier giving his last hurrah shuffling off, disrespected, knowing his time was definitely over while having enough grace to exit quietly. I noticed, probably like he did, that class is an extinct animal in today’s Hollywood.

Jerry Lewis is on the Hollywood politically incorrect s-list for a variety of statements made about various “untouchables”. Now that he has his Oscar, can he release “The Day the Clown Cried”?

He’s like what, 89 years old? Hasn’t had a profitable film since 1968? Why are the powers so down on him?

Because he dared to speak the truth. I have the same problem.

Rest assured “Clowns” will be released right after his passing to take advantage of that and to line the pockets of those he dared to “dis”. What an evil town.

I have this sneaking suspicion that the film will disappear down the memory hole after he passes at the behest of his heirs. Or an "accidental" fire will destroy the only print of the film.
