Mall Features Shops That Cater To Somali Culture (Minneapolis)
WCCO.com ^ | 2/21/09 | Darcy Pohland

Posted on 02/22/2009 6:26:56 PM PST by ButThreeLeftsDo

The Global Business Center in the Hi-Lake Shopping Center has 42 stores. The 20,000-square foot center has a little bit of everything, from home decorations to clothes.

The mall is not just for Somalis, but it does have some items that you might not find at other stores.

There is also a beauty shop, but it is not like others. It caters mostly to Muslim women.

"In our culture we can't show our hair, so if we have a lot of privacy, other beauty salons, we wont have that privacy," said shopper Asha Abdulla.

There are only about a handful of beauty shops in the area, so it's bound to be popular.

The mall also has a prayer room, since Muslims pray at least five times a day.

"It's very important, because a lot of people, they are coming to pray right here," said Abdi Mohammed, President of the Business Consortium, gesturing to the prayer area.

The developers expect other Somalis who live as far away as Nebraska and Ohio to come shop there. They also think location will help with the mall's success. There's free parking and the Light Rail is nearby.

"We are trying to our business to share with the other communities, so that's why we come here," said Abdi Mohammed.

There are 50 merchants on a waiting list wanting to set up shop at the Global Business Center.

Perfect. When all those fellers that suddenly "disappeared" from the Twin Cities and snuck back into Somalia to get some extra jihad training return home......they'll have a nice place to go shopping. Or, set up their base of operation.....

Weren't these people "settled" here by Lutheran church (or some other church) groups?

My theory: immigrants who are "settled" here by some outside agency have far less loyalty to this country than the immigrants who come here with help from friends and extended families.

There are places in this country where you can round the corner and see women crouched down like pictures in Africa, or swear the folks should be driving on sand next to camel trains.

I agree. Easier for the Homeland Security to monitor them in one spot.

Just check out the community billboard: “Al qaeda meeting at 2:45 pm near the Information booth by the Citibank, right after the 4th prayer to Mecca...ice cream will be served later.’

Sounds like a successful real estate venture.

I just can’t stand it when a business decides to cater to what it thinks will be its clientele. They should be forced to gear the business toward whatever the majority in the area thinks it should be.

Scary, isn't it?

I might have read somewhere long ago that in order to immigrate here and become a citizen, you had to first be an American in your heart, before you even boarded the boat. Or words to that effect.

Not sure where you read that one, but the history of the U.S. is replete with those who have indeed thought the U.S. might be a better place to earn a living, but NOT that they were an American at heart when they left. In fact, many wished they could stay in their home country, but thought they’d do better here.

The way the PC morons in the Cities cater to these vermin makes me want to retch. If it was up to me, I’d stock Lake Harriet with sharks and take them all out for swimming lessons.

You remind me about how all discrimination is supposed to be stopped.

Does this mean we are going back to the old ways of segregation? Hmmmm.

I’ve noticed that here in Detroit too.
The colors and patterns of tops and pants sure do draw attention!!!

This is what is in the area. The Hi-Lake strip mall is on the rough end of the Minneapolis main drag - Lake Street. Used to be mostly working class, now, mostly government dependent classes. I lived and worked in the area for about 15 years.

Hi WCF,

I used to live a block and a half from the Hi-Lake center. I remember when there was a JC Penney store and a Red Owl grocery there. Oh, and all my neighbors were Scandinavians. My how times have changed.

I certainly wouldn’t go to the salon. BTW, do you feel welcome at salons and barber shops that specialize in cutting blacks’ hair? Should they not exist?

“Haven’t you read about how non-muslims are not welcome in many neighborhoods in England, France, and other european countries?”

Haven’t you read about how non-Catholics weren’t welcome in Catholic neighborhoods and non-Protestants weren’t welcome in certain Protestants neighborhoods in European countries? In fact, they frequently killed each other. And I’m not talking about ancient history, either.

Or how about in the U.S. where wandering into the wrong ethnic neighborhood meant you got your butt beat?

Yeah, Ingebretsen’s is not too far from there - still a landmark, too. The Jolly Troll Smorgasbord on Minnehaha did a landmark business up until the late 60’s. Not to mention all the Norsk and Svensk names on gravestones at the Bloomington/Lake cemetary. Minneapolis Moline, Schooner Bar, Town Talk Diner - all a past culture that has gone away. Nothing is left but diversity and high crime rates.
