This is a good trend that I hope to see more of. Our Depression is not completely without some positive aspects and it would be a shame to have to endure one without a few of these rays of progress to brighten up the otherwise bleak outlook.
I know it’s not a popular view around here but local newspapers going down isn’t all good. There’s no better source to get local news and no better medium to follow around corrupt local politicos that the national media doesn’t care about.

What you say is true. The media as the “5th estate” is necessary. The Op-Ed took over reporting “Front Page” facts. As soon as they get back to the facts, they get their viability back.
The L.A. Times isn’t too far behind. What a joy when that rag goes. They actually sent me a subscription request a few days ago...I took great pleasure in writing my response and sending it back in their business reply mail.
Agree that there is a need for this level of coverage. The very positive aspect of the Media in the 21st Century is the removal of barriers to entry. The stranglehold of the Established Media is being broken and the voids created by the collapse of the print will be filled with National and Niche players.
I'm not worried about a lack of coverage. In fact I think the new structure will enable more complete and intensive coverage that heretofore was excluded due to these barriers.
Hope I'm right in my assessment.

These papers do a pretty good job of covering local news here in Maryland. I’m in the Baltimore burbs and they even have a section that caters to news in my region.
Search for the Examiner online. If you have it, find out where they have boxes to pick up the paper. They’re FREE.
I can get all the news I want off the internet, but I was actually raised on the Philadelphia Daily News. They did a great job with sports and I was a big Flyers and Sixers fan when I was a kid.
I think these kind of web driven newspapers like the Examiner are going to be the wave of the future if you like your news in print and on paper ~ I STILL DO.
I’m also fortunate to have the Washington Times down my way and can pick them up on the news stands, but who has the time to shuffle through a whole newspaper everyday now.
These left wing dinosaurs have done themselves in. They deserve to be unemployed. Along with the unions, special interests and education system they have transformed this nation into the USSA.
Hang in ther! It won’t be long before that traitor stink rag, the New York Times will finally be putting it’s turncoat yellow belly up in the air! I’ll have a party the day the wrecking balls start knocking that plague rat traitors concrete rat warren down.
We have one local paper in Houston and it doesn't meet your criteria.
Except they cover for their buddies, and local news has been pretty well supplanted by wire reports or joint agreements with local TV stations.

The Print press can no longer be the Constitutional Watchdog, as they have become the political LAPDOG.
The Press has lost the ability to tell the difference between Opinion and FACT. With 2 Bankruptcies to prove it.
I call for TALK RADIO to be the People’s Constitutional Watchdog.

The Examiner in Baltimore stopped publication on Feb 15.
Philadelphia has the Bulletin back for a year or so now. It was a far better paper than the Daily News tabloid. The Inquirer put it out of business because they had more Sunday sales where all the profit was made. The Bulletin had more circulation during the week because it was a better paper, didn't save it from going under like most afternoon papers.
The '5th estate', yes. Too bad today's papers are more a '5th column'.
