Gay rights took center stage at the Oscars ceremony when actor Sean Penn and the writer of the film "Milk" made impassioned pleas for opponents of same-sex marriage to rethink their stand.
Penn won the Academy's best actor award for his role as gay politician Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay man to be elected to public office, who was shot and killed in 1978.
"I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support," Penn said as he accepted his golden statuette.
"We've got to have equal rights for everyone."
He dismissed a protest outside the glittering Hollywood ceremony by banner-waving opponents of gay marriage, which four months ago was overturned in California following a referendum.
The demos were "very sad in a way, because it's a demonstration of such emotional cowardice to be so afraid to be extending the same rights to a fellow man as you would want for yourself," Penn said after the ceremony.

Dustin Lance Black, the writer of "Milk", who won the Academy Award for the best original screenplay also called for equal rights for gay Americans.
Addressing "gay and lesbian kids" watching the ceremony, Black said: "No matter what everyone tells you, God does love you ... very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours."

Penn also called on President Barack Obama to modify his position against gay marriage, saying it was "inevitable ... because it's not a human luxury, these are human needs and they will be gotten."

Their rights end where mine begin.
"Free Exercise" is not merely the freedom to think what you want, but to act on it. If my FAITH teaches me that homosexuality is a SIN, then I am free, not only to think it but to preach it. The sodomites are free to ignore me or preach against my Faith. Everybody else is free to ignore all of us.
Again, my rights stop where theirs begin. I could not deprive them of life or liberty or pursuit of happiness.
However, if their pursuit of happiness means forcing my young children to learn all the grisly details of their sexual habits and to accept them as normal, then they are encroaching on my rights.
See how that works?
It's a balance.
The Free Market of ideas.
The Sodomite lobby hates Freedom of Thought, Freedom of Speech, and the Free Market of ideas.
His best role was Mr. Hand’s “pet” student...........
I refuse to watch the Oscars. Hollywood is a disgusting, pathetic, morally bankrupt group of people.
And the movies that Hollywood's been making lately.
I should add “for the most part” to that. There are some exceptions.
So Penn won the award just to bring recognition to gays, the same way Halle Berry and Denzel Washington were given awards that one year, for racial reasons. Although, I think Denzel Washington is a great actor.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
A general truth about “rights” is that no one has ANY right that imposes an involuntary burden on another person.
And, as far as what God demands - love the sinner, hate the sin.
Submit to authority except when that authority requires you to sin.
when they give awards because of skin color, it diminishes their meaning.
Osacrs? Academy Awards? When, where, why. Either I missed something or I deliberately “censored” the programs shown on MY TV set.
I spent the evening watching the wonderful results of DIPLOMACY between the diplomats of the USA and the Empire of Japan. Much more educational
Was ANYONE even surprised that Sean Penn won the oscar for potraying Harvey Milk????
Hollywood has become so predictable.......
Become a mouthpiece for the liberal agenda and be rewarded with an Oscar regardless of talent....see Al Gore...
By the way, I think Sean Penn is a great talent.....
Remember that about 70% of homosexuals are born that way. . . the others just get sucked in.
Penn will always be a jerk, nobody that mattered watched anyway.
And if it wasn’t for Slumdog, Milk probably would have gotten Best Picture. But even the Academy knew that if they didn’t give it to Slumdog, it would smell.
Homosexuals already have more rights than heterosexuals. During my years in Human Resources, I can’t even count the number of people who were upset that their opposite-sex “roommates” couldn’t get medical benefits, but the gays’ partners could. I was squelched from saying anything in agreement, as the whole H.R. environment is steeped in political correctness and my job was on the line.
Boy, was I glad to retire from that cesspool!
I did think about one day looking my grandkids in the eyes..then I thought about gay married couples looking their grandkids in the eyes..oh..never mind..
“His best role was Mr. Hands pet student...........”
Sean Penn really stole the show there with his portrayal of Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
It certainly doesn’t seem to create stable families, which is the only reason to have marriage laws. They can live together, they can put each other in their wills, etc etc. Just don’t call it marriage, because it isn’t by any previous standard a marriage.
