Oscar winners make plea for gay rights
The Times of India ^ | 2/23/09 | Staff

Gay rights took center stage at the Oscars ceremony when actor Sean Penn and the writer of the film "Milk" made impassioned pleas for opponents of same-sex marriage to rethink their stand.

Penn won the Academy's best actor award for his role as gay politician Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay man to be elected to public office, who was shot and killed in 1978.

"I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support," Penn said as he accepted his golden statuette.

"We've got to have equal rights for everyone."

He dismissed a protest outside the glittering Hollywood ceremony by banner-waving opponents of gay marriage, which four months ago was overturned in California following a referendum.

The demos were "very sad in a way, because it's a demonstration of such emotional cowardice to be so afraid to be extending the same rights to a fellow man as you would want for yourself," Penn said after the ceremony.

Dustin Lance Black, the writer of "Milk", who won the Academy Award for the best original screenplay also called for equal rights for gay Americans.

Addressing "gay and lesbian kids" watching the ceremony, Black said: "No matter what everyone tells you, God does love you ... very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours."

Penn also called on President Barack Obama to modify his position against gay marriage, saying it was "inevitable ... because it's not a human luxury, these are human needs and they will be gotten."

What kind of idiotic morons don’t understand that men have semen and women have vaginas and wombs, and that when a men and women make love children are conceived and brought into the world. There is no place in a man where children can be born. Women cannot impregnate each other. If people insist on participating in sexual perversion, in no way does that make their sex acts equal to the act of marriage which brings forth life. Do not allow these evil people to displace the plain historical meaning of words. The real war is for posession of the thought forms of our culture.
Their goal is to destroy the historical idea of the sacred and replace it with one of their own making. It is Idolatry. Their weapon is speech. That is why, for example they love the “F” word and utter forth rivers of the most vile profanity. They are unwittingly driven to destroy what is pure and innocent. They hate the biblical idea of Holiness. They viscerally hate the God of the Bible and His authority over their lives. And they especially hate bible believing people [Christian or Jewish] and would kill them if they could. 50 million dead babies attest to their lethal potential. It is our duty to make sure that they never get the chance.

Sean Penn really stole the show there with his portrayal of Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Uhh, I beg to defer.

My wife enjoys watching the Oscars and I love my wife so I pretty much saw the entire broadcast. I thought it was actually pretty light on the political messages. I think Obama was only mentioned once and it was so quick I don’t even remember the context. Sean Penn was the only exception but was anyone really surprised by that ? I’m sure Hugo will call him today to congratulate him...

The show was a little boring at times but really not very political.

What you said, gator!

Sean Penn was just one of many actors who made a name for themselves in this movie: Forrest Whitaker, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Phoebe Cates, to name a few.

It is a black mark on Hollywood that they chose political activism over talent this year by screwing the Oscar story of the year—Mickey Rourke—merely to lodge a protest over Prop 8. Penn mentioned Roarke at the end of his speech, out of guilt, because he knew Mickey deserved it, but was dissed because of pure politics.

Homosexuals want a national seal of approval placed on aberrant behavior. It’s just that simple. This, it seems, will allow them to feel less perverse in their activities.

This whole celebrity culture that has this country in its grip is such a waste of time. They call what they do “work”, but anyone who has ever really worked in their lives and then becomes an actor usually will admit that they’re just playing and making a load of money. If people who call themselves religious will just IGNORE this garbage and get out and LIVE themselves, all this Hollyweird stuff would simply go away ‘cause the money would dry up. These “talented” people (in their own minds) are no more than you and me. They are groomed and massaged to the hilt for that one night of looking like demi-gods; most of them become aging humans real fast after their *star* begins to fall and a new “flavor of the year” comes along.

Right. The communists/Marxists/liberals don’t mind limiting the rights of the Christian to follow the Scriptures; but don’t you dare limit the Muslim’s right to kill who they like in obedience to the Koran. - If “society” doesn’t have some limits, then it’s “Katie Bar the Door”. - Their real desire is to force you to just glow with approval for lifestyles you think are immoral. The Thought Police.

The Marxists/communists want to latch onto any popular “cause” and swing and sway, singing “We Shall Overcome” (once a valid sentiment), while the real “civil rights” of the true victims are actually trampled by these phonies who want to some day have a statue of themselves in the courtyards of some big city for “abortion rights” going forward. At some point a society becomes so brutish that it collapses of its own excesses and hypocrisies. . and people like to blame God for society’s own triggering of the negative forces of the laws of nature that are so powerful they destroy man and his inventions.

I was hanging on PBS last night watching "Nature" and "Oliver Twist" when that drivel was going on.

BTW, the only movies I'd recommend that are in theaters now: "Taken" (with Liam Neeson as an ex-CIA agent trying to rescue his daughter kidnapped in Paris for the slave trade) and "Defiance" (with Daniel Craig, about Jewish partisans in eastern Poland in WW II.)

Penn was disgusting last night. I could not believe he was saying this crap and then did not even thank his wife to boot. I always thought that FREEPERS were too hard on celebrities, but after last night, I changed my mind. These celebs deserve everything they get. It was a good show until this idiot spoke.
