WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's likely third pick for Commerce secretary is former Washington Gov. Gary Locke, a senior administration official said Monday.

Locke, a Democrat, was the nation's first Chinese-American governor when he served two terms in the Washington statehouse from 1997 to 2005.

So much for de-ethnization and racial equality in America. Now people qualify for cabinet offices based on their racial characteristics?

So much for Chinese take out.

We have instead, Chinese take in.

Good luck to Mr. Lock, he will need all he can get.

This is the guy who didn’t seek reelection because of supposed threats to his life after giving the State of the Union rebuttal in ‘03.

“Democrats criticised him for embracing the Republican Party’s no-new-taxes approach to dealing with the state’s budget woes during and after the 2001 recession. Among his spending-reduction proposals were laying off thousands of state employees, reducing health coverage, freezing pay for most state employees, and cutting nursing homes and programs for the developmentally disabled”

Having lived through his reign, I have absolutely NO recollection of criticism from his Dem buddies. Locke is an extreme pro-abort, including vetoing partial birth abortion bans.

Not as radical and in your face as Gregoire, but still a classic pro-abortion Democrat. The most notable thing I can remember about him was the bats in the Governors Mansion, and that Rush Limbaugh paid Washington State a visit to campaign against him.

I think we've got a good trend going here in the PNW: send all our liberals to Washington.

Let's make it a federal program funded with state funds: that's something I'd be willing to pay extra sales tax for!

If we can only have Democrat governors in Washington, I’ll go with Locke every time. He is not corrupt—at least as far as I know. He was never surprised by the budget. He is a gentleman, and he never pandered the way Gregoire has.

“Locke was briefly linked to the scandal over foreign contributions to President Bill Clinton’s 1996 campaign. In July 1998, he gave a deposition to the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight about his relationships with questioned Clinton donors. But the committee subsequently said the deposition produced no evidence that Locke knowingly accepted illegal campaign donations.

Locke denied any wrongdoing, and he subsequently returned some checks tied to people implicated in the fundraising scandal, including $750 from John Huang. The former Commerce Department official was the Democratic Party’s chief fund raiser for the Asian-American population in the 1996 elections, and he became one of the central figures in the national Democratic Party fundraising scandal.

Also, in December 1997, Locke’s political committee was fined a maximum $2,500 by state regulators after it admitted breaking campaign finance laws during two out-of-state fundraisers in 1996.

And in March 1998, state investigators cleared Locke of wrongdoing following complaints that he unlawfully took $10,000 in campaign contributions from members of a Buddhist church.”

I heard about this this on the radio today.

Have you heard about this? A fund of hedge funds run by two members of Vice President Joe Biden's family was marketed exclusively by companies controlled by Texas financier R. Allen Stanford, who is facing Securities and Exchange Commission accusations of engaging in an $8 billion fraud.

That guilt is shared by the Dems who control the legislature here....but Locke went along with their business-killing deeds.

I wouldn’t disagree with most of that. One reason he was never surprised by a budget, though, is that he never met a tax he didn’t like. Even in years of surplus in the state.

No argument that he’s a way better choice than Gregoire...the choice of deceased voters everywhere.

I have to wonder if China requested Locke. Don’t forget that he accepted campaign money from the same Buddhist monks as Al Gore. Locke received the bulk of his campaign money from out of state donors, connected to Maria Hsiu (However you spell that name, actually, I hope it is even the right name. It has been a while)
