Prayer Request for Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum

Dear Friends
Orlean Koehle, California Eagle Forum President reports that on Tuesday Phyllis (85 years young) was speaking at UC Berkeley. As she was coming off the podium after giving a brilliant speech to about 150 students and adults in attendance (crowded into a room that only was meant to hold 70), she missed a step and fell and broke her hip. The college Republicans wanted her to join them for pictures afterwards out in the hall. Phyllis did not see the edge of the podium, which was hard to see, missed the step and fell on her right hip.

Roger, her son, and one of the other men in attendance helped lift her up and placed her on a chair. That is when she realized something was really wrong with her hip. She could not stand. An ambulance was called. We all waited to see how she was. Roger and Orlean both felt really bad that they did not help her down from the podium. Orlean had gone to tell the group that she was coming. That is when she heard the sound of her fall and all the gasps of the people around her.

Orlean says that she was amazingly brave. The ambulance men lifted her up and onto their gurney. As she was wheeled away, she waved goodbye to them with her beautiful smile. She was charming to the end, even with a broken hip. What a great example she was of a gracious, refined, brave lady, even in great pain, to all of the young college Republicans and to the feminists who still were mingling around.

Phyllis was operated on Wednesday afternoon and was in the recovery room for several hours. She had to have part of the hip bone - the ball that fits into the socket replaced because it had been crushed. The doctor said the operation was successful. They just need to keep on eye on her now for a few days and make sure all else goes well. There is always fear of a blood clot or something else after such an operation.

Orlean and another Eagle Forum member from Santa Rosa, Carol Pascoe, drove together to see Phyllis. They spent about 3 hours visiting with Phyllis' son Roger. This is very hard on him. They said he looked very tired. Please pray for him as well. He is able to stay in Berkeley with an old friend who lives there so that really helps out.

This is really a shame. 85 year olds don’t fully recover from broken hips, if they recover at all.

They replaced her hip because it broke so badly when she fell. She will be up and around in no time.

Never, ever, good at that age to break a hip. Pray hard for this decent, inspiring, woman. Theres really no polite way to say it, but she will deserve a massive show of respect when her time comes.

She has always fought the good fight, often against incredible odds. And she rarely gets as much credit as she deserves.

Yes, they can. My grandmother did, but she needed a lot of attention through it.

You are right svcw. Our 98 year aunt fell and broke her hip last year, she’s now 99 years young and walking around, happy as ever.
