Dear Friends
Orlean Koehle, California Eagle Forum President reports that on Tuesday Phyllis (85 years young) was speaking at UC Berkeley. As she was coming off the podium after giving a brilliant speech to about 150 students and adults in attendance (crowded into a room that only was meant to hold 70), she missed a step and fell and broke her hip. The college Republicans wanted her to join them for pictures afterwards out in the hall. Phyllis did not see the edge of the podium, which was hard to see, missed the step and fell on her right hip.
Roger, her son, and one of the other men in attendance helped lift her up and placed her on a chair. That is when she realized something was really wrong with her hip. She could not stand. An ambulance was called. We all waited to see how she was. Roger and Orlean both felt really bad that they did not help her down from the podium. Orlean had gone to tell the group that she was coming. That is when she heard the sound of her fall and all the gasps of the people around her.
Orlean says that she was amazingly brave. The ambulance men lifted her up and onto their gurney. As she was wheeled away, she waved goodbye to them with her beautiful smile. She was charming to the end, even with a broken hip. What a great example she was of a gracious, refined, brave lady, even in great pain, to all of the young college Republicans and to the feminists who still were mingling around.
Phyllis was operated on Wednesday afternoon and was in the recovery room for several hours. She had to have part of the hip bone - the ball that fits into the socket replaced because it had been crushed. The doctor said the operation was successful. They just need to keep on eye on her now for a few days and make sure all else goes well. There is always fear of a blood clot or something else after such an operation.
Orlean and another Eagle Forum member from Santa Rosa, Carol Pascoe, drove together to see Phyllis. They spent about 3 hours visiting with Phyllis' son Roger. This is very hard on him. They said he looked very tired. Please pray for him as well. He is able to stay in Berkeley with an old friend who lives there so that really helps out.
Prayers up for Phyllis - at least she knows in Whom she has believed...and that He is able.
You are correct - however, my then 85-year old mother-in-law, DID recover from breaking her hip.....her mother before her did not. My mother-in-law is now 90 years old and doing fairly well....physically, anyway.....suffering from dementia, though.
Prayers going up!!
A prayer for this indomitable woman who has meant so much to us all.
Prayers for her, and man, I didn’t know she was in her 80s. Time flies.
On another comment...under Obama's plan for health care didn't I read in some articles that surgeries for patients in the older age bracket will be determined if appropriate and financially worthwhile by the govt. (given the age of the patient)? Or something like that? It is frightening to me as I am entering my senior years. Would patients like Phyllis be prevented - or at least hindered from coverage - for hip replacements, knee replacements (which I just had) etc. if Obama's health plan goes through as proposed? If that is so, maybe some of the old codgers in Congress (their spouces too who enjoy the govt. coverage they have now) will be denied their chance to have such operations also. (Bet NOT!) Wonder if this plan Obama has for nationalizing health care would have provided Ted Kennedy with the type of care he is enjoying now?
re: her mother before her did not
They have made great strides in this surgery over the years. A lot has to do with the health and activity level of the patient before the fracture. In this case I would expect a satisfactory outcome. She’s one feisty lady who is quite active.
Prayers for her and her recovery.
Holy God, Please heal this brave woman and restore her to complete health. We ask in the Name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Hopefully she will make a fast and whole recovery...
This I assume will change her planned appearance at CPAC on Friday. It’s strange there is nothing on CPAC about her attendance being cancelled or nothing in the news I can find of her falling.

Prayers up for you, Phyllis. You’ve been a true Patriot fighting the good fight for decades! Wishing you a swift and complete recovery!
Nancy Reagan recovered from hers. I don’t know if she fully recovered, but didn’t that happen a couple of years ago?
Agreed.
May God bless & fully restore Mrs. Schlafly.....indomitable truly describes her, God love her.
Prayers for a great American. We love you Phyllis! and may the break release some healthy stem cells to go around and fix anything else that ails you! because we need you more than ever now.
I had my right hip done just three months ago, but I’m much younger, not even 70 just yet. I was amazed at how well it went and even more so at the result. My tip to anyone about to have it done is USE the MORPHINE PUMP to its max! I was a bit hesitant the first night, then came to find out I had taken less than one quarter the dose I was allowed to give myself. After that it went smoothly!
Prayers for Miss Schafly’s health.
