U.S. Senate Votes to Uphold Second Amendment in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, February 26, 2009 Fairfax, Va. - The United States Senate has voted, with overwhelming bipartisan support, to adopt an amendment offered by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) that seeks to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens in the District of Columbia. The amendment, attached to S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act, will repeal restrictive gun control laws passed by the District of Columbia's (D.C.) city council after the landmark D.C. v. Heller Supreme Court decision. The vote margin was 62-36.
"Today's vote brings us one step closer to restoring the Second Amendment freedom of law-abiding D.C. residents," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "It's ludicrous that good people in our nation's capital continue to be harassed as they try to defend themselves and their loved ones in their own homes. This vote reinforces the historic Heller ruling."
After the Heller ruling, the D.C. city council passed a law requiring would-be gun owners to pay a registration fee, pass a 20-question multiple choice test, take a five-hour training course, undergo an invasive background check every six years, re-register any firearm every three years, and finally, submit all handguns for ballistics testing. Current D.C. law also bans an overwhelming majority of firearms commonly used for self-defense. This Ensign Amendment would also remedy that unjust practice.
"NRA would like to thank the lead sponsor, Sen. John Ensign for his efforts to reform D.C.'s gun laws and enable folks to protect their property and their loved ones," concluded Cox. "It's time for leaders in Washington to wake up to the fact that the Supreme Court decision is now the law of the land."
C’mon...this is satire right?
Nope — just got the email from NRA!
Yay, congratulations, the bill’s still unconstitutional.
no it is on the nra website.
OK now for the big battle, the reimposition of the assult weapons ban and HR45.
Great news BUT the "BIG" test will come in the CONFERENCE COMMITTEE. It is there I expect it to be stripped from the bill!
Where are the laws for NYC and NY state?
On so many levels.
Current D.C. law also bans an overwhelming majority of firearms commonly used for self-defense.
OR THIS ?
After the Heller ruling, the D.C. city council passed a law requiring would-be gun owners to pay a registration fee, pass a 20-question multiple choice test, take a five-hour training course, undergo an invasive background check every six years, re-register any firearm every three years, and finally, submit all handguns for ballistics testing.
Or both ?!?!?........
Stay safe, thanks for your time ! !
Keep it Clean. It all comes out in the wash.
We know this ain’t a State,it’s just a District.
No, I saw it live on C-SPAN 2. I'm still pleasantly shocked. :-O
The DC vote portion is blatantly Unconstitutional. The Fairness Doctrine ban and gun control repeal are both fine. If the Senate truly believes in those amendments, it will fight for them in conference.
The 36 who voted against preserving US citizens constitutional rights should not be senators anymore.
Dobbs went on to cite Clinton's book where bubba wrote that the first gun ban was the single issue that cost the AlGore and the demoncrats the election.
Respect to Lou.
I don’t trust the rats anyhow. They will try to regulate, or tax or slip something in to a 1000 page bill nobody has read.
They are coming. first they have to shut down talk radio.
Pelousey and Reid can’t be trusted. Period!
I wish the “chill wind” Blinky feels is a boot kicking her in the ass all the way back to san fran.
Good news BUT Holder is hell bent on re-instating that “assault” weapon ban. If I take a butter knife and assault someone, does that make the butter knife an assault weapon? Is he saying if someone shoots 10 people with a .22 pistol or rifle, or a .38 revolver it’s less of an assault weapon than an AR 15 or an AK 47?
Where's Orwell when we need him?
Could we get a roll call please?
I want to see a roll call to. I like to know who my enemies are.
Lugar was the only R to vote “nay.” Most of the Dems who voted “nay” are from the Left Coast and Northeast. No surprise there, right?
I am going to email and call my congress critters and tell them, THIS IS MY HOT BUTTON ISSUE. They have to not only vote “no” on these bills, but STOP THESE BILLS. I am going to tell them that if they fail, there will be no further communication (or votes) from me, as they are obviously deadwood. This is my line in the sand. You want to impose a permanent “assault weapon” ban? You want to ban ammunition? You can’t stop these unconstitutional abominations? Then DON’T TALK TO ME, YOU WORMS.
>They are as relentless as they are self-serving.
....Why am I reminded of The Shawshank Redemption by you saying that?
That chill wind is the wind of bleak December, blowing across the night’s Plutonian shore, Nancy hears it, and knows the dems may lose the next election and they will be in power nevermore. That is why they may not attack the 2nd amendment.
Satire or not. It only effects 7-8 people.
If we had any guts at all we would keep up the pressure incessantly.
Perhaps this part of it won’t be.
Some of the same a__holes who voted ti “uphold the 2nd Amendment” will vote to make the AWB permanent. This time they will make the transfer of ANY hi-cap mags illegal, not just pre-ban mags.
They just aren’t ready to tackle US yet!
Too busy screwing with minor things like KILLING US with their kindness!
We got guts, nancy may be detecting a big loss in two years.
I expect Pelosi and crew will strip out the amendment when it goes through the House. Besides, as stated before, it is totally unconstitutional, anyhow.
Hey, Hey, NRA.....
Together we have WON today!
The part which Pelosi will want stripped from the bill and the part which is Unconstitutional are two different things.
But the Supes just affirmed the Lautenberg theft of rights.
Until the people revolt and re-write the constitution in absolutely unambiguous terms, there really are no rights.

Yeah that’s what I’d like to know. I gotta get the hell outta NY ASAP.
Nope, it got mentioned at CPAC tonight!
what about the rest of us that are around teh country now looking at Obama’s attempt to institute the ban again permanently?
It is coming and I am not happy about it at all.
limits on ammunition, guns, freedom to keep them .. it’s Nazi Germany in 2009
I know. I was referring to the “DC vote” being unconstitutional and Pelosi stripping the gun rights provision. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.
Did Spincter vote againt it?
They’re not going to tackle gun issues when they’re spending like drunken sailors. Give it a year or two, when they think we’re complacent and they’ll be grabbing our guns.
I’d be interested in a breakdown of the vote. I’d imagine anyone voting for this would oppose an “assault weapons” ban.
