Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

I look at charity and alms differently, with a charity, you have to drum up support so others will join you in your cause. A charity is like the alms box, you don’t hide the alms box, you leave it out so people will know where to give- their giving they may choose to do in private.

Ok, this is just a general question. I know lots of church groups that donate but they do not trumpet with news articles and stories. I have a question, why do the lds advertise what they do in such a public fashion?

“I look at charity and alms differently”

than Jesus!?

I agree drum up support for good works, but the author is using it to say “LDS good, LDS done this”, the TITLE screams phariseeicalism. This is exactly the kind of thing Jesus preached against in Matthew 6. I’m only saying the author was wrong in their presentation. And possibly people who promoted the article if in the same spirit

author would have been more persuasive leaving the LDS relation until the 2nd paragraph. doing it this way just seems cheap

should’ve just been “wheelchair donation leaves Iraqi’s wheeling good”, then you read, THEN you see LDS later & you think “yeah they’re good, not crazy crackers, bless them”

But this way you just think “self-serving soul soliciting”.

So very point on.

Its like the Pharisees who fasted standing on the corner dirty and complaining about how hungry they were. I seem to recall that Jesus said wash your clothes, comb your hair and go about your business, Fasting is between you and God. (ok paraphrased to be sure).

Gee, your question is so nuetral, but let me take a stab. The paper it is in is mostly read my Mormons. Therefore, it is nice to see what works are being done by one’s church. However, it does invite the rabid LDS haters to post their diatribes. I guess if I was an old bag lady with no husband and no teeth and no life, and my miserable life was almost over with, I just might post a long post to build myself up while tearing down others. Crazy like a foxx.

I know this was not to me. But the points are valid. People are wondering why the lds (who did a good thing here) must what appears to promote lds in the headline and first paragraphs.

Why not write the story and have it in the story that these were lds, it is the appearance of self promotion that is at question.

“Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven”

Quite possibly the most misused verse in the Bible. A full discussion of which would take an extremely long time.

My point is right. They should have left it until later, and it would have been more persuasive. I’m trying to help you! I WANT there to be better relations between LDS & proper Christians! We totally should be on the same team. You’re totally wrong about loads of stuff but that’s OK. You’re cool anyway.

I have a suggestion - if you need to be told in detail how you can respond on a thread about an organization doing charitable acts, then I would suggest staying off it entirely. Quite frankly, it’s pretty sorry that I have to babysit this thread and that some people just can’t say “good works” and keep their dogmatic issues on the Religion forum.

Thanks for the ping. The wheelchair inititave has been an ongoing thing for a decade.
Iraq is one of about a 100 countries the Church sends wheelchairs to, now over a quarter of a million chairs worldwide in their humanitarian effort. They also provide employment help for the same disabled folks getting the chairs.

Romans 14:
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

How about this.. think about saying..

“Gee LDS church, THANK YOU for donating wheel chairs to poor, injured kids”..

Instead of nit picking something in which we are just as guilty about. I’ve never once seen these kind of accusations drawn against, say, the Southern Baptist Convention when they announce a charitable donation. Usually they receive praise and accolades.

The LDS is not my church, therefore, I don’t feel it is my place to start nitpicking things like this when my own house needs cleaning. They deserve our thanks for this, not criticism.

I think I see where the mod is coming from.. it seems that no matter the subject, if someone in the topic happens to be LDS, the thread turns into a theological bash and the point of the news story is long gone.. Basically, a thread on Marie Osmond’s new jewelry line will have hundreds of posts how the LDS used to support polygamy because she happens to be Mormon.

“the Southern Baptist Convention when they announce a charitable donation”

I didn’t see that on here. If it were the same, I would have the same comment to make.

The title made me post. The title was childish, and it evoked my response. Anyone who actually read my comments saw I was focused on the AUTHOR, not the church for doing it. But as is so often the case, the facts/words are ignored, and some people just place their own expectations there instead.

It cuts both ways.

The anti posters have been advised many times to keep the theological debate on "open" threads in the Religion Forum where it belongs.

And the thin-skinned posters have been advised many times to stay away from "open" threads on the Religion Forum.

But there are some on both sides who ignore the moderators and are drawn like moths to a flame. If they get burnt they have no one else to blame.

This is a nice story about charity and should be treated as such. The “Auntie Ems” that will inevitably be drawn to any thread with the word LDS in it so they can spew their usual bile and hate...you’d think they would have better things to do than worry about Mormons...it’s a weird obsession...I am often surprised they are tolerated on this forum...IMHO they make conservatives look bad...magritte

There’s no game. You claim to see rabid “anti-mormonism”, and I am the most visible non-mormon on this thread, so that reflects on me.

I would just like to see one quote that is like you say.

If it’s “pick any mormon thread” then maybe so. I have studiously avoided them for a long time. But that title just begged to be given that Bible reference.

Defense Department Supports Wheelchair Donations in Iraq

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2004 – Several hundred Iraqis have new-found mobility, thanks to a public-private partnership that provides wheelchairs to victims of war, disability and disease.

About 280 wheelchairs, donated by churches and private contributors through the Wheelchair Foundation, were delivered to Iraq in December and are being distributed throughout the country. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, in coordination with the State Department, arranged and paid to transport the wheelchairs. A nongovernmental organization, Life for Relief and Development, is overseeing the distribution.

"This is a great example of private-public partnerships," said Judith McCallum, who coordinates transportation for humanitarian assistance goods for the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. It's a way for DoD to work with nongovernmental organizations to help people in need, she said.

So far, Life for Relief and Development has distributed the wheelchairs at events in Baghdad, Tikrit, Karbala and the province of Wasit.

McCallum said the joint effort fills a genuine need in Iraq, where thousands of residents have lost legs, many to land mines. Another shipment of 500 to 600 wheelchairs is scheduled for June.

The project is part of an ongoing DSCA effort by to support U.S. humanitarian assistance efforts worldwide, McCallum explained. The goal is to strengthen America's alliances and partnerships worldwide and to build trust and understanding of what America is all about.

"It's a way to help win the hearts and minds of people all over the world and to show them what the United States stands for," she said.

Last fall, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency took part in "Operation Afghanistan," a similar initiative that delivered more than 5,000 wheelchairs to disabled Afghans. The agency arranged and paid to transport the wheelchairs into Kabul, and the U.S. military provided logistics support on the ground.

"We are here to show the love and friendship of the people of the United States of America," said Wheelchair Foundation founder Kenneth Behring to an audience of more than 300 who gathered for the Afghanistan distribution. "We are here to show you that we care. Our hope is to give you hope to help provide freedom and dignity so you can more fully enjoy life."

The goal of the Wheelchair Foundation is to provide a wheelchair to everyone who needs but can't afford one, worldwide. Since 2000, the foundation has donated more than 160,000 wheelchairs in more than 100 countries.
