PARENTS should avoid trying to convince their teenage children of the difference between right and wrong when talking to them about sex, a new government leaflet is to advise.
Instead, any discussion of values should be kept “light” to encourage teenagers to form their own views, according to the brochure, which one critic has called “amoral”.
Talking to Your Teenager About Sex and Relationships will be distributed in pharmacies from next month as part of an initiative led by Beverley Hughes, the children’s minister.
The leaflet comes in the wake of the case of Alfie Patten, the 13-year-old boy from East Sussex who fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl and sparked a debate about how to cut rates of teenage parenthood.
It advises: “Discussing your values with your teenagers will help them to form their own. Remember, though, that trying to convince them of what’s right and wrong may discourage them from being open.”

A values-free approach to reducing teen pregnancy is a self-defeating proposition.
My parents were deeply religious and preached but as a 16 yr old boy I just wanted to get it on.
Parenting is difficult enough without the government stepping in and telling parents how to parent. Parents should instinctively know the difference between what is right and what is wrong. It is important for the parent to instill a sense of discipline with their children early on so that they too know that difference and live by it. Leaving that responsibility to teachers and others is irresponsible parental behavior. Children should possess this knowledge before they even get to school and kindergarten. That is why christian traditional values and principles is so important to the development of any child so that they will be able to be independent and self reliant and successful in their adult life.

I guess I shouldn’t tell my 11 year old that even though all her friends have those cute little britches and shorts with words written on them to have someone look at their hiney that she isn’t allowed to wear them and should form an opinion of her own. Morality free.

So it doesn't matter if your partner is willing or not, because we wouldn't want to have to decide whether rape is right or wrong. And that whole age thing is just an arbitrary social construct which really doesn't matter in a world without right or wrong. < shaking head at England>

What has happened to parents saying “Son/Daughter, here is what we believe, and this is what God tells us in the Bible.”
I wonder if the British government will be OK with the kids forming their own views on following the government’s laws.
This is a pretty blatant example of the state religion of secular humanism attempting to dogmatically censor alternative viewpoints, such as Christians. It is the responsibility of parents, not government, to teach values. (From a biblical perspective, for example, it is the job of fathers, not government, or even the church, to teach their children.)
