In-state tuition dangles in reach of illegal immigrants
Denver Post ^ | 03/01/2009 | Tim Hoover

Posted on 03/01/2009 8:40:37 AM PST by george76

A bill to allow illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state college tuition may have the best chance of passing in years because of the support of some key Colorado Republican businessmen.

The latest effort, pushed by state Sen. Chris Romer, D-Denver, would allow illegal immigrants ... to get the in-state tuition rate at state colleges and universities, which would save the undocumented students thousands of dollars. The bill is scheduled to get its first committee hearing Thursday.

A bill passed last year clarified that U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants are Colorado residents and thus eligible for in-state tuition. Romer's bill is aimed at foreign-born children who enter the country illegally with their undocumented parents.

Similar bills have been proposed before, but Romer said what's different this time is the public backing of some heavy-hitting Republicans in the business community.

Those include Dick Monfort, co-owner of the Colorado Rockies and chairman of the University of Northern Colorado Board of Trustees, which has endorsed the legislation. Alex Cranberg, chairman of Aspect Energy and a top GOP donor, also supports the bill.

Stan Weekes, state director of the Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform, which favors tougher restrictions on illegal immigration, said the bill is unfair to American students from other states who have to pay the higher tuition.

"Do we open it to my nephew in Nebraska to come in with the same in-state tuition?" Weekes said.

Ten states, including Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Utah, have passed legislation to offer the in-state rate to undocumented students; 30 states have considered such legislation since 2001, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

This year, Colorado is among five states considering such a law.

Arkansas and Missouri are considering bills to prohibit illegal immigrants from getting in-state tuition.

Tim Hoover is functionally illiterate.

The proper term is Illegal Alien.

It has been used as such for over a hundred years.

There is a reason the Rocky Mountain News went under.

The Denver Post will soon follow suit.

Kansas has offered in-state tuition to illegals for the last several years while US citizens outside Kansas are charged about double in-state rates.

If the college or university **knows** they are illegal, why aren’t they calling the INS and police to have them arrested?

The entire headline is a complete disconnect!

A criminal comes knocking on the university or college door and the school officials are wondering about giving him or her instate tuition?!! Unbelievable! Arrest these criminals.

Colorado will soon go the way of California. I have a child in the CU system and one question...will the administration at these lovely institutions require that the illegal aliens produce the same level of proof of vaccinations as they do American citizens? My son has to get blood drawn and tested for the MMR because the nurse in 1991 forgot to put her initials down. And really, how many illegal immigrants are actually qualified to attend university? Will their illegal parents/grandparents fill out the FASFA form to get financial aid? Anyone have any information? Yes, I do understand the unfairness of it and believe that any illegal alien should not be receiving a dime of American tax dollars to support their criminal behavior.

Let’s face it. The Reconquista has happened. We have allowed so many Hispanics, illegal and LEGAL to immigrate here that they have reached tipping power. This could have been prevented if Bush had enforced the immigration laws for the eight years he was in office, instead of only the final year, and if a GOP controlled Congress had dared to change the legal immigration rules. But no. That was not done. And now there is now hope, and the Dems have arranged to stay in power permanently. In the future we will witness both parties competing to be the one that can provide the most benefits and freebees to a large, hungry, greedy group of people who grew up in foreign countries that preached the benefits of socialism to them from birth, but did not have the wherewithall to actually carry it out. Unfortunately, neither do we.

Giving in-state tuition to illegals, while making US citizens and legal residents from other states pay more, helps the administrators get brownie points for increasing the “diversity” of the student body. Not that all out-of-state students are white or that no illegals are white, but pecentage-wise it probably helps with the cherished goal of lowering the percentage of white students.

Hispanics, especially legal immigrants are natural conservatives. Their religious and family values are very similar to those of the Republicans. People that confuse legal Hispanics with illegals are part of the reason that they are aligning with the Democrats instead of republicans. There is a big difference between legal and illegal Hispanics. It would be helpful if conservatives understood that and acted accordingly. Your post is a perfect example of why Hispanics have a hard time warming up to the conservatives.

We should never let illegal aliens into our colleges.
There are too many Americans struggling to get in.
Paying for them is even worse. It is promoting parasitism.

You know not that of which you speak. Could be you heard people say it so often you believe it. But that is the line Anglo Republicans tell other Anglo Republicans, and then can’t figure out what is going on. Perhaps, and only perhaps, their religious and family values are similar to those of Republicans. You, I believe, are stuck back in the 70s and 80s, when what you say was probably the case. I watch Spanish language TV almost exclusively and in 2009, their religious and family values are not as you describe. Abortion rates where I live are higher than any other group except blacks, and the rate of out of wedlock births is higher. What’s more, the casa chica has moved to the U.S. as well, and is easier to maintain because the government kicks in most of the support. That said, their economic values are very different. And these are people who came here for ECONOMIC reasons, not religious and family values reasons. They came here from countries whose governments preached the benefits of Socialism for decades, in the schools and in public life, without ever being able to really deliver. In the case of Mexico, where I lived for several years, it was ongoing indoctrination. So what the Democrats have done and the Republicans have acquiesced in is to bring in a large number of new Democratic voters. The vast majority are never going to be Republicans until the GOP outbids the Democrats for them. Oh, and I am Hispanic. I was born in Los Angeles and educated in parochial schools. People like me who were not socialized as Socialists are conservative by nature. But we are a minority. And those who were, aren’t. It really comes down to the old “He who robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support — and vote — of Paul.”

No. It is not disrespectful or insulting, merely descriptive. Anglos is just short for Anglo-Saxon, that is northern Europeans, as opposed to gachupín, a person from Spain. Gringo, in some settings is pejorative, and in others not.

And this is precisely a primary reason why tuition is so outrageous for white citizens. Whites have no set-aside scholarships and are required to meet higher standards, involving actual accomplishments, in order to gain entry.
