The House approved non-binding measures Thursday requesting the Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of extending commuter rail from Santa Fe to Taos and from Santa Fe to Las Vegas and Raton.
Also endorsed was a non-binding measure for a feasibility study of establishing commuter rail service between El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, the second largest city in the state.

I’m sure they will get the numbers they want.
Study the “feasibility” of extending to Raton? What a scam! Look at a map - There’s nothing there!
There is lots of money *there* for Richardson’s pals.
A billion a mile sounds about right!

"We got'a take care of our union 'friends', y'know? Also, them fagu archetec firms, pay off some tree huggers, hire the Senators drooling nephew. Lot's of money for the takings, y'know Pauli? So, when I say donate to the Senator, I mean everyone."
Another RR to Nowhere. How many ways are there to waste our money?

Its a curious waste of money. At best...they might have 100 passengers per day. There are about a dozen trac’s in America where profit and passengers might carry a light-rail (Miami to Orlando, Seattle to Portland, Las Vegas to LA, Chicago to St Paul, St Louis to Kansas City, etc). But for the life of me...I can’t think of a single reason any light-rail in New Mexico would be of any value or attract any tourists. They are basically fishing for fed funds to carry on this project...and give away millions to some idiot to plant a light-rail.
Contractor lobby.
Unions.
Engineering and architect firms.
Environmental abatement firms
Lawyers.
Equipment manufacturers.
Politicians sell out the public interest to those groups for campaign donations.
They donate to get money via the public that they would have to otherwise work for.
It’s all about money.
As in most Totalitarian societies, the trains run on time, but once at the destination, the long bread lines go around the block.
LOL
Funny graphic, thanks for the ping george.
study the feasibility of extending commuter rail from Santa Fe to Taos and from Santa Fe to Las Vegas and Raton. Thanks geo. The feasibility study will cost $6.7 billion. ;')

A couple of things for all to know.
First, the studies would not be started until local governments or private interests provided money to pay for all or most of the costs. Richardson got his railroad already, so don't look for these studies let alone action to go anywhere, at least not anytime soon.
Second, they are looking at heavy rail on existing tracks, not trolley-like light rail.
Third, the reason for the studies being pushed is the popularity of the train. Another Saturday train was added just yesterday. And why is it so popular?? The reason is that you can go on a 200-mile round trip (from Belen to Santa Fe and return) for as little as $6.00 total!! Every time the state adds another train, it loses more money. Farebox recovery is only 10% or less. And Santa Fe is a city where you can walk around but if you don't want to, the taxpayers pay for free shuttles to go from the station to the Palace of the Governors where you can buy trinkets from the Indians out in front.
So for cheap entertainment, you can get the all the kids and mama onto the train for less than the cost of a Super-sized Big Mac. A bargain for the riders (and tourists who would have to pay to park in Santa Fe) but a big drain on the local taxpayers.
And just THINK...we coulda had Richardson in the White House instead of Obama!
Thanks!
You just about covered it all, except this: ALL of those jobs will go to non-whites!
