NASA's Chief Climate Scientist Stirs Controversy With Call for Civil Disobedience
Fox News ^ | February 27, 2009 | Joshua Rhett Miller

Posted on 03/01/2009 12:18:08 PM PST by Sequoyah101

"We need to send a message to Congress and the president that we want them to take the actions that are needed to preserve climate for young people and future generations and all life on the planet," says Hansen, who has likened coal-fired power plants to "factories of death" and claims he was muzzled by the Bush administration when he warned of drastic climate changes.

I'm pretty sure this is a termination type offense.

I'm also thinking a call to civil disobedience is against the law but they seem to have their ducks in a row.

Just on that note, suggest the Tea Party crowd take a look at their protest guidelines at the web site. Nothing like free research to build on?

who has likened coal-fired power plants to "factories of death"

If that is true, then he must agree that volcanoes are much much worse. I propose he try and stop them first-preferably by hurling himself into one by means of protest.

This is a claim that he's been repeating in many of the hundreds of interviews in which he participated during the Bush administration. A bit ironic, no?

I guess climate change is all the rage now since Gorbal Warming is out of vogue. If you would have said 15 years ago you were trying to stop climate change, you would have been locked in a hospital and sedated.

I wish Obama would order all coal fired power plants to shut down for one week, no exceptions. He could use the bogus stimulous money to restart them. In the meantime a**holes like this NASA guy can go fish for the week. I would bet this type of action would squelch most of the attempts to stop global warming, especially those directed at the power plants.

A much simpler solution (that banks everywhere might even like) is to declare all Federal Paychecks (except SS of course we already paid for that) Null and Void. Save billions, if not trillions. Then after the paychecks stop for a while all the ex-gov’t bureaucrats would have to actually go out and find productive employment...within a few years, voila, the economy is back on solid footing.

within a few years, voila, the economy is back on solid footing.

It wouldn't take years. Maybe three months for two reasons. The bureaucrats would have to find a job. Then the politicians in Congress would not have anybody to kiss up to them and so they would not know how to pass any more spending bills because they do not know how to type or read or print or anything necessary to handle all the paperwork to get a bill passed.

Good idea. I like it.

A government employee using his job title/position to further a political cause that includes civil disobedience...

And why exactly is he still employed? OH>>> RIGHT>>>> The liberal kooks are in charge.

And what right does he have to a job involving science when his own beliefs are based on extremely flawed and faked “science”?

He needs to be among the unemployed... now.

WE got varying amounts of snow here in Arkansas last night...

It snowed for another hour after this picture, stopped, then snowed a bit more a couple hours later. Would have had a lot more accumulation, if it weren't 33 degrees when this picture was taken. Had been 50 earlier in the day.

Total was about 1 inch before it finally quit. All gone now.

I have been telling folks that we got an inch of global warming last night...

I would go for requiring Reps and Senators to not have a staff... Make them hand-write any bill they want to introduce (or type). Make them actually read cover-to-cover every single bill up for a vote.

Watch the number of bills (and the complexity) go way down! Further, those idiots like Barney Frank don’t apparently function above a 4th grade level (or mentality) anyway - so the “average Joe” should actually be able to understand the law!

First of all, obedience to the rule of law than to the rule of man is what creates civility, by this foundational understanding alone, it should be obvious that civil-disobedience is an oxymoronic concept; what it truly is remains a show of force with the threat of riotous disorder implied.

I truly believe that Dr. Hansen is unhinged.

It isn’t. The law only applies to conservatives, not to people who advance the liberal agenda. The MSM has effectively immunized Hansen from any control.

Maybe not in violation. Depends on his class of service and if this is considered a political organization...it is vague

Permitted/Prohibited Activities for Employees Who May Participate in Partisan Political Activity

These federal and D.C. employees may-

* be candidates for public office in nonpartisan elections
* register and vote as they choose
* assist in voter registration drives
* express opinions about candidates and issues
* contribute money to political organizations
* attend political fundraising functions
* attend and be active at political rallies and meetings
* join and be an active member of a political party or club
* sign nominating petitions
* campaign for or against referendum questions, constitutional amendments, municipal ordinances
* campaign for or against candidates in partisan elections
* make campaign speeches for candidates in partisan elections
* distribute campaign literature in partisan elections
* hold office in political clubs or parties

These federal and D.C. employees may not-

* use official authority or influence to interfere with an election
* solicit or discourage political activity of anyone with business before their agency
* solicit or receive political contributions (may be done in certain limited situations by federal labor or other employee organizations)
* be candidates for public office in partisan elections
* engage in political activity while:
o on duty
o in a government office
o wearing an official uniform
o using a government vehicle
* wear partisan political buttons on duty

So how about Hansen endorsing Kerry? How about taking money from Kerry's wife and Geo. Soros?

This guy is wrong, dishonest, evil, and should receive zero dollars and/or credibility from the the government. His pet, Gavin, should go with him.

In areas where there are a vast number of federal employees you can run for local elective office.

Hansen doesn't seem to be involved in any of that.

I think the joke's on him though. We are having something like 9 or 10 inches of snow tonight and he's going to be out there standing in it shouting at a coal fired power plant.

I must have a picture of that.
