The Japanese emperor is likely to visit Pearl Harbor in July, the first time a member of the imperial family will have visited the site of the surprise attack that brought the United States into the Second World War.

He’ll sneak in on Dec. 7.
Last time I checked, the majority of Hawaii Real Estate is owned by Japanese investors. They couldn’t take it over by invading it, so they were patient and took it over the easy way by buying it.
What’s Obama expected to apologize for now?
1940's -- The bad guys have armored divisions and battleships. They try to take over the world.
America out produces and out fights them across two oceans.
1950-1980's -- The bad guys attempt low-intensity warfare in many developing countries.
This works for awhile, but America under Reagan learns to figth back and socialism collapses.
1990-2007 -- The bad guys use terrorism as a weapon to slowly chip away at western dominance.
This fails spectacularly, and Iraq joins the good guys.
So, now the bad guys are waging economic war. They buy what they can, they damage the rest. And so far, it looks like this is how the West will fall.
Note: I like the Japanese and I don't consider them "bad guys". But they do show that simply buying what you want is often a better strategy than trying to take what you want.
Japan has been fighting an economic war since 1945. Whenever you hear of a foreign country having a "targeted" trading range for its currency vs the US greenback and racking up huge trade surpluses they are not our friends.
Just when did said invasion attempt occur?
He will probably apologize for the US’s economic waterboarding of Japan over Japan’s invasion of China which forced Japan to defend itself by a limited airstrike against a purely military target on a remote island base that the conservative, racist propagandists demonized as a “sneak attack,” and then apologize for the racist war that inevitably followed.
Alaska, in 1942. In the Aleutians..
So???
Ruh Roh.
Sounds like a good thing.
Next stop, Nanking? /sarc
But the Pearl Harbor visit is a good step. Japan is a good nation but has had great difficulty accepting that it made some mistakes.
Did the Japanese land troups and occupy any of those islands? Yes or No?
I will say this, thank God Emperor Hirohito managed to get on the radio before Tojo and Company whacked him.
Yes...
I wonder if he will be laughing, joking and taking pictures,
like the Japanese that were there when I visited.
Thank you very much ... we have a winner!
Sort of like using diplomacy instead of war?
Yep - Attu and Kiska, by name.
They landed in Kika and Attu in June 1942. Almost all of the native population had been evacuated. The japanese were driven off in august 1943.
You mean Kiska.
But note, each is a good distance north from Pearl Harbor, the Kido Butai (often seen as the Striking Force) having oilers but no troup transports.
And this relates to Pearl Harbor and an invasion of same - how?
Only in that there once was an invasion during the war..
Yes..I’m huked on fonix..
” ... once ...” Heard of “D-Day” have you?
True. It kept the Soviets from invading Japan..
For bgeing a @$%W#@!! Kenyan Pretender..
The Japanese High Command was willing to let their troops die there..
The Japanese High Command was willing to let their troops die there..
You must like playing word games..
And so what.
The US High Command was willing to let MacArthur's troop die ...
What exactly is your point? Were you on the Axis side during WW2, or do you have dreams of Tojo and tea, along with some reich and roll?
Economics is not a zero sum game. Ie, two parties engaging in trade can both benefit.
Did you miss that?
In comes something about Alaska, then something about an invasion "once", then something about troops left to die ... and these be called out, this gives you pause?
Somehow you missed Pearl Harbor? Why is that?
Sure, if the markets are free and open. Some of our foreign trade is done this way, some isn't.
Probably your histrionics..
Fine ... now we all know.
D-Day was not an invasion, since the nations taking part in the landings included the nation, France, where they were landing. France invited the landings.
Ummm, I think the ultimate goal of some Japanese was in fact invasion of many Pacific Islands including Hawaii. Many of their invasions did succeed however temporarily thanks to the USA, Australia, New Zealand and others at great cost in blood and wealth. Had those countries not responded as well as they did, it is conceivable that Hawaii could in fact have been invaded. I believe that the Battle of Midway was prelude of a planned Japanese invasion of Hawaii. Some Japanese felt that the US could be invaded although that would probably have been unrealistic. One can argue the details back and forth in the light of 2009 and differing histories and details that have been published or come to light in the interim since December 7.
Don’t waste your time Sheik, someone doesn’t know and they don’t know they don’t know.
Take your pick - the common terms were "D-Day Invasion", the "Normandy Invasion" ...
Or, better, as taken from the speeches of WSC:
"The Invasion of France
June 6, 1944
House of Commons
On June 4, British and American troops entered Rome. On June 6, the long-awaited Allied invasion of Europe began, the principal landings being in Normandy. Churchill's statement that fighting was taking place in Caen was, however incorrect. ..."
Now, what did Churchill say? What was his wordings?
As a refresher, also check where this thread's many tangents began.
In 1941, December of that year, was the Terrority of Hawaii "invaded" by the Japanese?
What coulds', shoulds', mighta' - happened is beyond the scope of this question.
Yup!
“You should have as much respect for my work as you have for the four buttocks which engendered you, and for the peg of life which united them.”
Of course, your mileage my vary.
