HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Eyewitness News has learned that former First Lady Barbara Bush had heart surgery today at Methodist Hospital.

According to Barbara Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath the surgery was scheduled as a precautionary step after doctors found hardening on one part of Mrs. Bush's aorta last week. Doctors had been tracking this hardening and determined they didn't want to wait, but it's not considered a drastic condition.
Former President George Bush's chief of staff Jean Becker described the surgery as "very routine."

HOUSTON - Former First Lady Barbara Bush is recovering at Methodist Hospital after undergoing a successful heart surgery Wednesday afternoon.
Doctors called it a valve replacement surgery. It was a two-and-half-hour procedure that took place at Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
Mehtodist tells FOX 26 that Dr. Jerald Lawrie performed the surgery. He is with the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center.
Her husband, George H.W. Bush, is currently with her at the hospital. He says the surgery went well.
In November, Barbara Bush underwent laparoscopic surgery also at Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Doctors Surgeons performed the operation to repair a perforated ulcer.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush had open-heart surgery Wednesday and is resting comfortably with former President Geoege H.W. Bush at her side, Bush spokesman Jim McGrath told ABC News.
The surgery was taken as a precautionary step after doctors found hardening on one part of her aorta last week, McGrath said.
Doctors had been tracking the hardening and determined they didn't want to wait.
