A CHINESE man who beheaded and hacked a Canadian bus passenger to pieces has been found not guilty of murder on mental grounds.
Vince Weiguang Li, 40, who had been charged with murdering 22-year-old Tim McLean on a Canadian Greyhound bus on July 30, 2008, has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Li had repeatedly stabbed Mr McLean, who had been asleep on the seat next to him, sawn off his head, removed his internal organs, pocketed his nose, tongue and an ear, and taunted police and bystanders with the severed head.
Police said in court documents Li "appeared to smell, and then eat parts of Tim McLean's flesh" and "lick blood from his hands" as they surrounded the bus on a desolate highway 90 kilometres west of Winnipeg, in western Canada, soon after the attack.
Authorities found body parts littered throughout the bus, some in white plastic bags.
Mr McLean's eyes and a third of his heart were also missing, and it is presumed Li ate them, said a pathologist in court files, though Li denies this.
The other 35 passengers and the driver were jolted by "blood-curdling screams" and fled, said witnesses, bracing the door after their escape to trap Li inside the bus.
How could have anyone on that Bus not have attacked that maniac?
Nonsense. Just bring an extra sharp machete with you next time.
Wha...?! I remember that story here. Does this mean he’ll be released? :-0
I forgot about that story...so the freak is gonna walk?!
“The other 35 passengers and the driver were jolted by “blood-curdling screams” and fled, said witnesses, bracing the door after their escape to trap Li inside the bus.”
From the sounds of things, they were cowardly enough to not rescue this one man who was sitting right next to them but not fearful enough to keep a psychopath away from the general public. What is the meaning of “insane” when everybody is insane?
Possibly, at some point when some overworked doctor wants to get rid of him.
Don’t worry. He’ll be put in an institution and released in 5 years or so as “cured”. Seen it all before as a cop. Best deal would be to release him in either the judge’s or psychiatrist’s neighborhood.
Extreme cowardice that can only come from a selfish communist culture.
Maybe the jury thought that you can’t blame a guy for wanting to get ahead.
Are they blaming Bush yet??
Killers benefit China’s national interests (i.e disposing of the excess population). They are only interesting in executing innocent people.
Canada.
"Li will be institutionalized without a criminal record and reassessed every year by a mental health review board to determine if he is fit for release."
"[The victim] McLean's family says they will fight the law that allows people who are found not criminally responsible to be released into the community once they are deemed well"
I only did general psych. a long time ago and haven’t been much interested in it since. But if I remember correctly, their was no specific “paranoid schizophrenia” diagnosis, although that phrase has long been popular with nattering journalists. It was either “paranoia” or “schizophrenia.” Paranoids are seldom diagnosed due to their scheming nature and fear of being analyzed. Schizophrenics are often diagnosed.
This story seems a bit odd. If the man had no hostage and had already killed his victim then what exactly were the police doing? How was the Chinese man taunting them by doing unspeakable things to the victim?
If the police stood around and let this happen and didn’t pump some lead into this animal then they should all be fired.
My point is that it takes some time to carve a man up and do those kind of sick things and they just stood and watched. I can promise you he would not have taunted me with the mans head or anything else. I would have put a bullet in his brain pan and be done with him.
Call me a coward if you want but unless I had a firearm or a comabt knife I probably wouldn’t have gone up against him either. Psychotics tend to be able to switch the rage against one person as easily as the original victim. And judging by the fact that he was armed I doubt I would have done anymore than just been another added casualty.
The only way I can see myself going against someone like that unarmed is if they were attacking a child. I might go down but it would give the kid a way to escape.
Should have been executed TWICE
Several times even.
I still think they should have a category for guilty and insane...
A 'not-guilty' verdict when someone obviously committed the crime is just ... crazy...
This happened in Canada, it is a Canadian court that is judging him not guilty by reason of insanity, not China.
That’s even scarier. Let’s hope the world ends soon.
>Extreme cowardice that can only come from a selfish communist culture.
Or DC... but I’m repeating you.
“Killers benefit Chinas national interests (i.e disposing of the excess population). They are only interesting in executing innocent people”
That is true....think about Tiamin (sp) Square...that guy standing in from of the tank....
It was a weird story. Thread after thread here began following it last summer as soon as it broke. I remember a video interview of the passengers. They were caught by surprise. A guy sitting nearby claimed he didn’t even realize what was happening at first and that he either made an attempt to stop the killer, or considered it, but by then the victim was gone, I think. So, people started running out of the bus. Then he and a few other passengers blocked the door so the killer couldn’t leave the bus.
He must have been REAAAAL good lookin’
Now instead they are just giving him an opportunity to do it again some day.
“More at this link. As other people here pointed out, he’ll be institutionalized, but probably not long enough: “
To me, that is an affront to common decency..what about the surviving family that has to deal with their loss? The mentally unfit diagnosis is a copout is many cases...JMHO
I agree 100%.
Vince Weiguang Li is obviously enduring terrible suffering.
The state should euthanize him and end the pain.
It is effectively illegal to carry concealed handguns in Canada. There is a permit that allows people to carry if they can prove they need to protect their lives but the permit is very rarely issued. [wiki]
Study that name for possible clues.
it’s hard to forget any story you read here on FR :)
Uighur?
I wonder what sort of history this murderer has? I doubt he was a reasonably normal person who just one day carried out this vicious murder as his first abnormal act.
...your personal safety is your problem!
Thanks for the diagnosis. Maybe they didn’t cover it in the 101 class you slept through.

Reason #2,454,627 to stay the hell away from Canada!
This guy puts Hannibal Lector to shame!
I, like virtually every other freshman at my university, took Psych 101. We all had to participate in a certain number of experimental hours, and if you were signed up and missed yours, there was trouble. Of course I learned this the hard way. I was directed into a little room with a table and an apparatus with lights and buttons on it, and to make a long story short, spent the next 90 minutes trading electrical shocks with another malingerer. It was pretty intense, and I can't imagine it happening today. Anyway, I stuck to “hard science” after that.
That’s alright, and thanks.
LOL! That kind of “shock therapy” (not to be confused with the kind that’s actually been applied) would be an effective behavioral/rational aid for directing students toward productive studies. And although economic conditions are getting rough, hard sciences will be in huge demand in the near future, IMO. As imports drop off due to mounting debts, we’ll certainly need people who are capable of designing and making truly useful things. :-)
I’m playing with a cheap CAD package now by learning to design a house with it (QCAD Pro). ...drawing a few missing blocks and symbols for that as per codes. AutoCAD is a little too expensive for the self-builder or hobbyist, and I’m using UNIX-like systems anyway (NetBSD and Linux—helping with testing, learning software development, etc., for NetBSD).
...also analyzing some thermal energy stuff (homemade heat collector, storage and radiation systems) to see if they’re doable with the IRC and other codes.
Absolutely, the bastard should not have lived long enough to see a judge. Real justice should have been meted out by the witnesses. I daresay they would suffer less lingering effects if they had been proactive in taking him out, rather than allow him to live to taunt them with this desecration. People! We have a responsibility as human beings to STOP this behavior ourselves.... not to WAIT for police.
If the existance of police forces results in the emasculation of free citizens and good people, then fire the police. We’re not worthy of protection and justice, and they are not capable of providing such. It is a delusion. Madness reigns.
Good God! How can any of these “witnesses” ever face this victim’s family? He was a 23 year old young man. This story is layered in wrong upon wrong.

It always fun to see who the bed-wetters are...
In future don’t wait for justic
There are a lot of large black bears and mountain lions around my place. The bears only become social and dangerous to tidier people (no garbage) as they overpopulate and their territories overlap (happening now). They’re becoming overly curious, but we haven’t needed to use any of the Brenneke slugs for bear, yet. The cougars tend to be very reclusive and are only rarely dangerous to those who walk in the dark without looking behind them (big, stalking cats see that). They have killed a pet or two, and some livestock once in a great while. ...only know the presence of the big cats through an occasional road sighting in headlights and very often now through seeing their tracks (no nail prints, numbers of toes,...) and other signs.
As for livestock, well, we do protect livestock when necessary. ...not very often in this remote area so far (on the Rockies). Only the elk herds are getting hit much by lions and wolves (elk hoof here and an elk hoof there, as each herd passes back and forth).
We’ll trade all of our mountain lions for those African lions. [Little ironic humor there.] African lions would be easier to keep an eye on and increase revenues from tourism. ;-)
I agree. It should be involuntary manslaughter at the least.
Involuntary cause he’s certifiably schizophrenic. But there
are lots of schizophrenics who don’t kill, so there’s got
to be a category for that (criminally insane might be the
one but there has to be a cost). How can a society allow an
innocent man to be butchered, and let the perp go? No matter
what the reason.
Fine, he is not guilty because he is criminaly insane. So put him in a mental ward and execute him with electroshock therapy because he is criminaly insane.
Socialized pacifism.
