Unions Should not be so Confident in EFCA Passing Senate
The American Spectator ^ | March 5, 2009 | Brian Johnson

Recent articles surrounding the Employee Free Choice Act have focused on it's likelyhood of passing the Senate. A statement by the AFL-CIO legislative director Bill Sammuel to reporters claims that the unions think they have the votes needed to pass card check. However, I disagree.

Now, I am assuming everyone knows what "card check" and the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is. If not, click here.

Ok, now that you are informed, let's walk through the numbers.

It is expected that EFCA will be introduced in the House and Senate on Monday. Ok. We all knew that it was going to come at some point; no reason to freak out. Everyone needs to remember that introduction is just that, an introduction. It is not a vote, or a debate, or a huge amendment chance or loss - it is just an introduction that we all knew was coming.

With that being said, let's go through the votes. Based on last years votes, we can assume that all the R's, with the questionable excpetion of Sen. Specter, will oppose cloture.

While the article paints a hopeful picture, there is a real confidence coming from labor’s leadership and the hardcore liberals in Congress.

I sense they will not do card-check as a stand-alone.

Bob Tyrell should give Mr. Johnson some English lessons.

“there is a real confidence”

Ya mean because during of biden’s “it’s time to start dancing” quote after his secret, non transparent meeting with union leaders at their luxury digs yesterday?

No, that was done to flush out the opposition and force them to reveal their hand.

I am talking about statements made by prominent congressional liberals and union leaders that convey a tone of confidence this will happen.

Union leaders have not really pushed the rank and file to support this because they know there is no support. Nevertheless, the union leadership is confident they will get it done this year.

My first question... Will this bill affect American Samoa? That's the place that Pelosi made sure that the boost in minimum wage didn't affect, since she and her hubby have interests in the Starkist Tuna plant there... If the plant goes union, I guess the minimum wage really won't matter.

More importantly, I want to see the very first place that goes union due to this bill be the hotel that the Pelosis own! As I recall, it's NOT a union hotel! I hope the union organizers are ready to rush in there!
