JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has appointed a state judge who once served on the board of Planned Parenthood to the state Supreme Court, against the urgings of a conservative group who claimed the pick would put "another activist" on the court.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen, 47, will be the second woman to serve on the state's high court. Former Gov. Tony Knowles appointed current Chief Justice Dana Fabe in 1996. Christen was one of two judges recommended for the post by the Alaska Judicial Council, an independent citizen's commission that evaluates judicial appointments for the governor.

Palin said she had "every confidence that Judge Christen has the experience, intellect, wisdom and character to be an outstanding Supreme Court justice." But the Alaska Family Council, a conservative Christian group that advocates against gay marriage and abortion rights, had said Christen was the more liberal of the two choices. Palmer Superior Court Judge Eric Smith was the other applicant.

The group said Smith would be more inclined "to turn back the tide of activism" while Christen would side with other justices against laws like the one struck down in 2006 requiring girls 16 and younger to obtain parental consent to receive an abortion.

Yes, I'm afraid to say:

Palin is about to jump the shark. Hopefully, some dirt comes out in the wash.

An ex board member from Planned Barrenhood?

There must be some type of explanation for this. If not, she's done in my book.

One of many FReepers have already posted and proved this is another smear against Conservative Gov Palin

On Conservatives4palin.com they posted both Smith and Christian’s resume, NO WHERE on it does it mention Christian being a member EVER of Planned Parenthood..looks to be another lie by Fagan and the other creeps out to destroy Sarah. So sad, I don’t get what is going on in Alaska, so many scumbags over there(Not talking about the citizens who live there, but the officials over there) just evil people. Already demeanizing Christian without reading a damn thing about her.

Here is Morgan Christian’s application
http://www.ajc.state.ak.us/Selection/Applications/2009/christenapp.pdf

And here is Eric Smith’s
http://www.ajc.state.ak.us/Selection/Applications/AllBefore98/smith96.pdf

He is a member of many environmentalists groups including:
Board of Trustees, Alaska Conservation Foundation
Member, Trustees for Alaska, Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, Northern Alaska Environmental Center, Alaska Center for the Environment, Natural Resources Defense Council, Alaska Marine Conservation Council, Alaska Public Interest Research Group

Meanwhile, Morgan Christian states in hers..

In her application, Christen described her judicial philosophy as “faithfulness to the Alaska Constitution, adherence to the doctrine of separation of powers and the insistence that all litigants be treated with courtesy and respect.”..........

Palin Names Christen to Alaska Supreme Court State of Alaska press release Governor Sarah Palin selected Anchorage Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen to the Alaska Supreme Court. Christen is the 20th justice appointed to the Court.

"Alaska’s Supreme Court bears the awesome responsibility of ensuring that our court system administers justice in firm accordance with the principles laid down in our state Constitution," said Governor Palin. "I have every confidence that Judge Christen has the experience, intellect, wisdom and character to be an outstanding Supreme Court justice."

Christen, 47, was born in Chehalis, Washington. After attending colleges in England, Switzerland, and the People’s Republic of China, she received a bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Washington in 1983, and a law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California, in 1986.

Christen worked as a law clerk to Anchorage Superior Court Justice Brian Shortell from 1986-87, then joined Preston, Gates & Ellis in 1987, becoming a partner in 1992. She was appointed as an Anchorage Superior Court justice in 2002, and has been presiding judge since 2005.

Christen currently serves on the boards of the Alaska Community Foundation and the Rasmuson Foundation, and previously served on the boards of the United Way of Anchorage, and of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A past president of Anchorage Association of Women Lawyers, she has also won the Anchorage Chamber’s Light of Hope award for helping Alaska children in 2004, and won the Anchorage Chamber’s Athena Society Award in 2006. She has been a member of the Downtown Anchorage Rotary Club since 1992.v The Alaska Supreme Court serves as the ultimate court of appeals for the state’s District and Superior Courts. The chief justice and four associate justices hear cases in Anchorage on a monthly basis and in Fairbanks and Juneau on a quarterly basis. The court also administers the state’s judicial system.

Christen will replace Justice Warren Matthews, who has served on the Supreme Court for 22 years, including six years as chief justice, from 1987-1990 and again from 1997-2000. State law bars judges from serving past 70, and Matthews will turn 70 on April 5.

"I am grateful to Justice Matthews for his long years of service to the people of Alaska on the high court," Governor Palin said.

Under current judicial selection procedures, the Alaska Judicial Council received applications from six Alaska attorneys, winnowed the list to two names, and forwarded them to the governor.

Christen had served on the board of Planned Parenthood in the 1990s before the organization started performing abortions in Alaska in 2003.

I pray that the Republicans will not throw another idiot like Palin at us for President. Why must we have idiots like Bush, Obama, or Palin as president? Why can’t we have smart guys like Sessions or DeMint for president? I am really starting to think that there is a council of elders that are running the USA and they put a puppet figure head in charge while they (the council of elders) are really running the show.

The other candidate to that post was far more liberal.

Keep it up. Your boy Obama can’t even talk without a teleprompter. Obama can’t even fill his cabinet posts
because your bunch believe in raising taxes but not paying them.

I don’t have to read anything further to recognize this as a democrat/communist smear against Gov Palin. With the government and all the MSM in their direct control why do they find it necessary to destroy Rush and Sarah on such a massive personal level? And how will history judge us in our retaliation?

Incorrect. Christen served on the board of an organization in the 1990s that did not perform abortions. Later, after Christen left, the organization became Planned Parenthood in Alaska.
