Rasmussen Poll: Honeymoon ending quickly

RasmussenReports' new daily tracking poll has President Barrack Obama receiving his lowest approval rating since immediately after the election, 56%. 43% of Americans generally disapprove of his performance, 31% strongly do.

Obama's approval rating was immediately after the election was 52%. As is typical after an election (according to longer-standing polls, such as Gallup), America put aside its partisan feelings, giving the newly elected the benefit of the doubt: his approvals rose to 67% over the course of the next month, peaking at 69%. They stayed in that range, which was high even for a newly elected president, until inauguration day.

Since his inauguration, Obama's presidential approval index (Rasmussen's measure of strong approval minus strong disapproval) plunged by nearly three quarters. Within a week, his approval rating reached 60%; It;s fluctuated slightly within each week, bouncing as high as 63%, but his weekly approval rating average has declined each week.

Each new low has occurred over a weekend; each midweek sees his approval ratings bounce slightly, so he may be slightly better off then 56%. A week ago, he polled at 58%, and Newsweek's most recent poll matches that. Fox News, on the other hand is closer to 63%.

Other presidents' approval ratings have surged in this time. President George W. Bush was inaugurated with approval ratings barely cracking 50%, but they surged to the mid-60s. Reagan's moved from the mid-50s to nearly 70%. George H.W. Bush's reached the high 70s. Clinton moved to the mid-60s; Kennedy and Carter also reached the 70s. Only the unelected Gerald Ford saw his approval ratings decline so soon after inauguration.

Incidentally, for some who believe that Roosevelt's popularity despite failing to get us out of the great depression suggests that Obama could politically benefit from his economic failing: Within the first 100 days of the Roosevelt administration, the stock market had soared nearly 50%; it nearly doubled in the first year.

I’m sure it wasn’t because I just finished writing the analyses. I would have written it as a comment to any existing news piece about the Rasmussen poll, but I searched and there are no news stories with Rasmussen in the titles since March 3. I agree. What’s more, I believe that the very fact that people did suspend judgment initially will only heighten the sense of betrayal and make it harder for him to turn his poll numbers around.

Roosevelt campaigned against Hoover, a Republican who had started to tank the economy. Roosevelt said he’d correct all Hoover’s mistakes, but instead made them even bigger. I would think his campaign promises kept his popularity up for a while. However, when we got into WWII, it was PATRIOTISM only which got him re-elected. And, even then, there were people who knew he was a socialist and voted against him.

Good point, that middle class voters who keep watching their wealth evaporate will lose patience with Obama.

But his core supporters among lefties, ACORN people, etc. may stay high. These ACORN dudes don’t have 401ks, so they look at things from that point of view. They think middle class people live too well and have enough money and wealth as it is. Ditto for the truly wealthy.

Roosevelt was sworn in at almost the exact moment that the economy was bottoming. Obama’s timing wasn’t so good. Also, Roosevelt actually did something. Roosevelt declared a bank holiday and reinvented the financial system. Obama’s claim to fame is that he established Wednesday night as party night.

The main difference between Roosevelt and Obama, though, is that Roosevelt was trying to fix the economy. Obama is trying to break it so that he can introduce socialism.

however, the amount of track left is growing shorter by the day..IMO, within 60-90 days his core constituents will begin to feel some remorse as their checks haven’t arrived AND a LOT of them find they don’t qualify for mortgage assistance etc...

Our culture likes immediate gratification. People want results and they want them quickly. Folks quickly step into and out of fads and fashions.

Obama was supposed to make thins better, but we know his policies won’t do that. Not in the short term, certainly. Probably not in the medium and long term either.

The downside of being a messiah is that sooner or later, you have to deliver a miracle or two. Barry can’t do miracles. The apostles will notice soon, and get restless.

That’s the problem with being a shepherd - the sheep can just as soon take to you as grow alienated.
