Brewster's Trillions sicken, not starve the beast

What do you do if you can't starve the beast? Feed it junk food.

Now, I'm sure President Obama is quite the liberal, so don't think I'm proposing he's mixed up with any Karl Rove mad genius conspiracy. But sometimes evil has a way of confounding itself. And it's looking pretty good that the Democratic Congress is built enough on simple, stupid rage that it's incapable of governing.

Take the stimulus bill. It's a billion dollars over just a few short years. It's not even good Keynesian economics. Once the money is spent, there won't be any new 21st century infrastructure built. Amazingly, though, there won't be much more federal bureaucracy built; it'll be the same bureaucracy we have now, just in brand new multi-billion dollar campuses. It's as if Obama is playing Brewster's Trillions. The beast will have gorged itself, but not really gotten anymore powerful, just fatter.

This is no call for complacency. There will be a massive push for new bureaucracy coming up next. “Health care reform,” for instance, is red meat for the beast. But the beast already has such a belly ache from so much junk food, that the beast, impossibly fearsome just a few months ago, might actually be beatable.

We can win the House back in 2010. The same opinion polls which Democrats led by seven to nine points in last fall are now reading a statistical dead heat. ¹ Obama's approval ratings are down thirteen points in just six weeks. ² The economy is going to suck, sadly, but Obama will be on the hook.

A fiscally conservative House can't end abortion, ban fetal stem cell research, win in Afghanistan, or develop clean coal liquification. And we will not win back the Senate; we'd need to win 29 seats to do that. But the amazing thing is that the government will run out of stimulus funds to spend, and the House can block new spending. And in doing so, it can set the groundwork for robust economic growth in the next administration. In the meanwhile, the public will witness the destructiveness of the Reid-Pelosi Congress.

What conservative activists must do is make sure that the Republicans who begin to rise to power in 2010 are conservatives, not just slightly less insanely liberal. We need to be confident in the upcoming resurgence of the Republican party, and make sure we don't allow the media and the McCain types to dictate who the supposedly most electable candidates are. We need to defeat RINOs like Senator Arlen Specter.

It's true that President Bush and Senator McCain diagnosed the problems with the housing bubble, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That makes their failure to fight to fix the system all the more outrageous. Bush's regulators, in fact, routinely threatened banks that hesitated giving illegal aliens mortgages, even though an illegal alien who goes upside down on his loan has no reason not to simply disappear. Don't believe me? Compare the counties which have massive default rates with the counties with the most rapid growth in Hispanic population. ³⁴ (Most Hispanics are not illegal aliens, but illegal aliens and their dependents drive much of the growth in the Hispanic population.)

We need to make sure that when the country decides to give Republicans another chance at governing America, we provide it with leaders who will do what's right, not what is politically expedient.
