Did you know that if you translate “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” into Russian, it becomes “the vodka is agreeable but the meat has gone bad”? Literal translations can be tricky that way.
It seems that no translators were harmed in the manufacturing of Hillary Clinton’s “reset” button, which she presented to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva on Friday.
“We worked hard to get the right Russian word,” Clinton addressed Lavrov in a deliberately slow voice, as if talking to a special-needs child. “Do you think we got it?”
“You got it wrong,” Lavrov answered in fluent English. “This says ‘peregruzka,’ which means overcharged.”
Well, it looks like somebody used a cheap electronic translation program. But it could be worse. I once came across a website that advertised its automated translation service with an example of a label from a jar of pickles, informing Russian consumers that it contained condoms...

This whole thing is undeniable evidence that Hillary is inept. She is in charge of the entire Department of State, every embassy, including our embassy in Moscow. There are hundreds of people who know everything there is to know about Russia’s language and culture in the State Department.
Yet Hillary didn’t take the time to find one foreign service officer to verify the meaning of the word she printed on a symbolic gift she gave to the Russian Foreign Minister?!?!? And then she stands there at a photo-op to ensure the embarassment makes headlines around the world?!?!?

I’m glad I’m not keeping up on the news if those are real pictures! Are they!? If so - they all have completely gone off their rockers. What the heck are they sniffing at the WH. A box set of DVDs. Gag buttons. I’m waiting for Biden to shake hands with the Sheik of Arabia with one of those hidden buzzer thingys in his palm.
Let's face facts. Ever since Bill Clinton was elected, Hillary rode on his coattails and never had to achieve a damned thing on her own. Sure, she was elected senator in a state where she couldn't lose, but so what? Now she faces a real challenge and is simply not up to the job. Will the enemies of our nation simply turn to stone when they see her Medusa face? Not likely, they're not Republicans.
There's one other thing to consider. Barack Obama doesn't give a rat's rear end about foreign policy. He's too busy enacting his socialist domestic agenda and presiding over the meltdown of our economy. That means that Hillary Clinton has a free hand to direct foreign policy, and that should make all of us think very hard indeed.

How bout “I am a jelly doughnut!”????? Liberals have no shame. Kennedy looked like a complete jackass when he stood in Berlin and proclaimed that, yet, the press left it alone. President Bush, on the other hand, was excoriated relentlessly by the press because he had the nerve to beat Algore at his own game. So President Bush had a Texas accent and spoke with a bit of colloquialism. He was genuine, warm and friendly. And at least he didn’t need a teleprompter every time he opened his mouth.

Better be more careful - a simplistic translation could result in a word meaning “convert” (with a religious connotation), or “displace” (as in forced emigration). Either would be one hell of a button gag to hand over.

Condeleza Rice spoke fluent Russian. Even if they got it right its doubtful he would get the silly gag. Do they have Staples in Moscow? This was for the American press to bash Bush with.

Russians think Americans smile too much. It’s a cultural thing. They think that (unless you are close friends) anyone who is always smiling at you is either an idiot or is trying to con you.
With Hillary, they’re right both ways.
Even if she had managed to find someone to translate this correctly (gee, where could the Secretary of State find a decent translator??), this whole bit still makes her (and us) look stupid. Resent button indeed.

I always liked Condi. When everyone else was bashing her for being too friendly to the Palestinians - I prefered to lay the blame on the Israelis. They were the ones trying for a “peacful resolution”. Condi was just backing up our allies’ wishes IMHO.

The following book transliterates the Russian into English alphabet. The downside is the “crudeness” factor of the words used Russian and English. But Russian slang tends to be like that. Not all, but a lot. If you are easily offended by “blunt” language, you probably don't want to learn much about Russian slang.
