Someone needs to tell her not to wear her daughter’s ponytail rubber-bands out of the house! Especially not to a fancy evening... All together I think this was was too informal for the occasion. The other women are all wearing ball gowns - or at least tea length gowns! Why is she wearing a sweater, and costume-like jewelry?

Her outfit look good but maybe one of her daughters made her necklace and she promised to wear it. That’s the only reason I could think of to wear that thing.

Again there's Michelle with the inappropriate clothing.
The black sweater and skirt set would be great for an appearance at a school, or a sports event, or would have been just the right thing to wear at the gathering of women Veterans last week, minus the strange necklace, of course.
This was a gala affair, as evidenced by the dresses of the women on stage. Michelle could have worn a cocktail dress or something akin to that. Sleeveless would even have been fine for this event, with a nice wrap.
