What SURTASS LFA works (as an active sonar) is different from a dipping active sonar.

One way to do a dipping Active Sonar is to use a blimp (as in the Goodyear Blimp).

SURTASS must go at slow speeds to find stuff...

A Blimp might be able to go up to 40+ knots and then maintain a position to dip the sonar.

In point of fact, blimps were used in WWII to find German/Japanese Submarines (though mainly German U-boats).

Currently platforms that may provide Active Dipping Sonar are limited by weight and time over the area to hunt the sub... (Helicopters or V-22 Osprey).

There are dipping passive sonars... These are airborne systems... (At least to my knowledge)

So you were on SURTASS ships also? When I was on them, there was not enough room to house more than a couple extra bodies. If they have reduced the crew size to accomodate a security detachment, why don’t they have them?

Yes I know, but these ships are not designed to dip sonar, LFA is the closest they have.

I worked on a project under TACTAS. It was a project attached to a Surface towed array system like SURTASS LFA, but it was only passive.

They added the ability to have a "dipping sonar", but that was only a passive system.

This was at the time SDI or STAR WARS was bounced about...

Fast forward about 30 years and you have SURTASS and other systems...

We most certainly had a Det without exceeding the COI. Also, these days, an MSC-operated vessel can get a USCG waiver to carry a SecDet above and beyond the COI limit.

I’ve heard of TACTAS a long time ago. I got started with the SURTASS program in ‘84.

Which ships did you sail on?
