COPENHAGEN (AFP) – Months before make-or-break climate negotiations, a conclave of scientists warned Tuesday that the impact of global warming was accelerating beyond a forecast made by UN experts two years ago.
Sea levels this century may rise several times higher than predictions made in 2007 that form the scientific foundation for policymakers today, the meeting heard.
In March 2007, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that global warming, if unchecked, would lead to a devastating amalgam of floods, drought, disease and extreme weather by the century end.
The world's oceans would creep up 18 to 59 centimetres (7 to 23 inches), enough to wipe out several small island nations, and wreak havoc for tens of millions living in low-lying deltas in east Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Africa.
But a new study, presented at the Copenhagen meeting on Tuesday, factored in likely water runoff from disintegrating glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica, and found the rise could be much higher.
The IPCC estimate had been based largely on the expansion of oceans from higher temperatures, rather than meltwater and the impact of glaciers tumbling into the sea.
Using the new model, "we get a range of sea level rise by 2100 between 75 and 190 centimetres when we apply the IPCC's temperature scenarios for the future," said climate expert Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Even if the world manages to dramatically cut the emission of greenhouse gases driving global warming, the "best estimate" is about one metre (3.25 feet), he said.
"A few years ago, those of us who talked about the impact of the ice sheets were seen as extremists. Today it is recognized as the central issue," said glaciologist Eric Rignot of the University of California at Irvine.

I see good things coming from this.
It is time for "adult supervision" to overview such questionable predictions. Just what models, assumptions, data, and methodology led to this frightening prediction? The publication authorities may need to show a little discrimination before allowing questionable results to be published, or, at a minimum, qualify them by also publishing the scenarios that lead to such conclusions. Perhaps the probability of all of this coming together is one chance in four hundred trillion, so not to worry, because it is more likely that one or more oceans will dry up. Which is more ridiculous?
Fortunately, global warming has been "checked". Most recent data has shown no global warming for more than a decade. This makes global warming activists, such as reported here, nothing but unhinged kooks. These reporters and activists deserve our pity, not our time.

Using the new model,Those who deal with data see reality, those who deal with models see fantasy. Models can be and are routinely are "tweaked to improve accuracy." In their vernacular, "accuracy" means increasing the urgency to assure research funding.
Computer modeling is as much an art as it is a science and much depends upon the assumptions that are made, consciously and otherwise. Additionally there is far more to consider when you consider the entire Earth as a single but ever-changing environment. It is no accident that meteorologists need the very best and most powerful computing platforms just to do 3-5 day forecasts. The interplay of factors in a column of atmosphere extending from ground level to space is almost unbelievable.
In this prediction of a 3+ foot rise in mean sea level, I wonder what compensating factors do their computer models take into account for the following factors; increase in solar bounce-back from an increase in iceberg coverage, where the increased water evaporation from the increased water surface will be deposited and so on? Are these scientist more competent than I? Yes without a doubt. Are they more competent than the 'dissenters' who, despite Al Gore's risible protestations, are becoming an increasingly significant protest movement against anthropocentric global climate change? I have most considerable DOUBTS!

Why do you call them scientists? They are modelers. I started my career as a scientist. The scientific method shaped my knowledge. In the 70’s I got into computing. The only science in the computer is the actual manufactured parts. Programs can do anything.
Do you realize that you can come up with a single equation that will pass exactly through N distinct data points? The equation will be of order N-1.
It will pass through all, but there is no guarantee where it goes between these points or beyond them.
