The 'First Dude' in his element (Sports Illustrated)
Sports Illustrated ^ | March 11, 2009 | Bill Donahue

Posted on 03/11/2009 2:36:13 PM PDT by SolidWood

Behold Todd Palin's snow machine, dangling from a truck's winch in the icy gray murk of an Alaskan winter morning. The machine is gleaming, new, scarcely ridden. It is orange and black and pointy-nosed, with thin, tensile orange steel suspension arms jutting from its sides like the wings on a menacing insect. This is, no doubt, a machine that could inflict a nasty sting, but right now its engine is stilled, and a certain awed quietude prevails on Big Lake, outside Anchorage, at the start of the 2009 Tesoro Iron Dog, a 2,000-mile snow-machine odyssey that crashes through the Alaskan backcountry, northwest to Nome and then east to Fairbanks.

"That an Arctic Cat F600?" one bystander murmurs.

"Yup," says his bud.

"Ohlins shocks?"

"Yup."

Racers of lesser means did not arrive here with winches. No, they wrestled their 500-pound machines out of their pickups with the engines snarling, exhaust spewing everywhere as they heaved the things down little makeshift ramps. Palin's sled settles on the newly fallen snow soundlessly, and then he just stands beside it, buff, grinning and vigorously gnawing on chewing gum.

Sport Illustrated is lib crap from Time Warner aka CNN. The story portrays the Palins as local yokels.

I thought the story to be interesting... Have you read it? It's certainly not a hit-piece.

Then again lib elitists will think of anything related to rural, outdoor lifestyle to be "yokely"...

Sports Illustrated is populated at all levels with nothing but libs. Remember, sportswriters are libs who weren’t smart enough to become real reporters. They all long to be like Katie Couric or Keith Olbermann...

Why do the Palins continue to put their worst foot forward. SI is no friend of theirs.

I am amazed. Have you even read the article?

Nothing in this article irked me as negative... and I am very sensitive about it.

This story makes you resent the results of the election even more. These are great American folks, who were dismissed by our idiot electorate. And we got stuck with Obama and Biden, a couple of losers.

The article was in no way negative. Give it a read.

I can see why somebody like Todd Palin would scare hell out of the New York elite. Neutered Chihuahuas will bark at an alpha wolf.

WOW! Todd’s a Real Man! Quite a comparison to the gay fauxpotus we are stuck with in D.C.! ZERo would be screamin in pain and fear, cowered in a corner bellyaching about how impossible not being in 89 degree temperature controlled rooms are. The Fairy Wings would freeze and crack(dont mix up with his crack!)and fall off:-(

Mr. Palin, leaving an attractive woman like that alone for such a long time ain't right.

What's that, Mrs Palin? Why yes I do recognize your .357, why do you ask?

Thanks for posting this. I thought the article was great. Hope it's in the print mag. Loved this quote:
For a second you see the fire that has propelled him into the winner's circle and that flames up whenever, as he puts it, "that kangaroo court down in Juneau tries to ruin my wife's reputation." Todd Palin is irked.

Too many on this site react to headlines or source of an article.
And you dare suggest people actually read before commenting?

Even if SI is liberal, it was a good article. I’m guessing that a large percentage of SI readers are conservatives.

I’d like to see Field and Stream send a reporter to Alaska in September to go on a hunting trip with the gov and her family. I’m betting a F&S edition with Palin on the cover would double or triple their newsstand sales, and increase their subscriptions as well.

Anyone who has a connection at F&S should suggest the idea to them.

Why do the Palins continue to put their worst foot forward.

What crap. This article contains not one word that would make me think the Palins are "putting their worst foot forward".
