Smokers Don't Like The Hike

HUNTINGTON W.Va. -- The federal tax on tobacco will increase from 39-cents to $1.01 in April. That increase has some smokers angry while others say it may be a reason to cut back or quit for good.

Smokers in West Virginia are bracing for a huge increase in price next month.

According to national report, New Yorkers pay the highest state tax at $2.75 per pack. South Carolina residents pay only 7-cents. State taxes on cigarettes in West Virginia are 25-cents per pack. Some smokers say the increase in taxes, whether state or federal will create a hardship on people who can least afford it.

Rob Hickman is a smoker. He says the increase may force some people to choose between bying cigarettes or food.

Kristin Wheatley is a non-smoker. She says some people may quit because they can't afford the higher prices.

Okay...I know a lot of you are smokers and don't like the tax, I just wanted you to see this idiot. Rob here has to choose between buying food and cigarettes. (Yes I know there was a typo in the article) Rob should know that FOOD comes first. What worries me is if Rob and others like him have kids and will choose cigarettes over food.

Mine just went up last week from $6.75 to $7.65. They will be going up again in April.

Choosing between food and cigarettes is no contest. Of course you skip the food and buy the cigarettes!!!

Wrong. It is the lower socio-economic strata that smoke the most and they'll continue to smoke. The kids may not have enough food, but mom and dad will get their cigarettes.

Did any of these geniuses on Capitol Hill bother to ask our friends up in Utopia ... err ... Canada ... how well things worked out when they raised tobacco taxes through the roof?

I think the biggest gainer in that debacle was organized crime who continue to make a killing selling untaxed tobacco on the lack market.

I’ve thought that America should sue the Indian tribes that introduced the Tobacco to the settlers. That would be interesting...

Also, to fund AIDS research, a $20 cover charge at every gay bar, and a $50 charge at bathhouses.

I mean, why should smokers be singled out for their bad behavior?

Of course the Buffalo News came out with an article saying since they aren’t under gov. regulation that they are probably full of poison.

So when the tax revenues from tobacco start declining as people seek other avenues to indulge their self-destructive tendencies, what will the .gov tax next to make up for “the shortfall?”

Rob is an idiot.

That said, it is time to quit; for me. And there will be many more like me. But the fun part will be when other things people like get taxed to high Heaven.... like the "fat taxes" in New York. Politicians will wonder where their tax revenue went, when smoking declines, and move onto taxing other things.....

Furthermore, they've outlawed smoking just about everywhere outside your home, with some states trying to outlaw smoking in your home. Then they decide cigarettes need to be "fire standard compliant," so idiots will stop burning down their houses; this makes the cigarettes taste like crap (fortunately it hasn't hit here... yet, but will in Jan).

So, they've managed to take something enjoyable and ruin it completely. Sounds like "they won;)"... its time to quit and let others pick up the lost tax revenue.

You know, I wish the Nanny State was as adamant at outlawing abortion as it was smoking..... at least the second hand affects of abortion are immediately demonstrative at killing another human being.

Wait till they see the prices on loose tobacco (roll your own) double or more. The prices on the cigarette tubes are going to more than triple.

The SCHIP house of cards is destined to fail. They plan to fund it with cigarette taxes that will cause people to quit. At the same time the FDA will be regulating tobacco out of existence. *Tah dah* No money for SCHIP.

First of all I am just posting the tax.....yes I think it is unfair.

In post #1 was my complaint. My complaint is that some moron will choose cigarettes over food. Now we don’t know if he has kids. What we do know is that there are others like him. The tax is there and thanks to Obama it will be there. That should not stop people from doing stupid things like buying cigarettes over food esp. if kids are in the picture. You know that is what is coming. This man saying he would have to choose “cigarettes over food” is just plain moronic. Food is a necessity of life. Cigarettes are a pleasure. This man should give up another pleasure if he wants to smoke that bad!!!!!!!!!

Paying $9.00 a pack here in NYC. Problem is nobody in NYC buys their smokes here anymore. Either go to Long Island, bootleggers or Indian reservations. There is a huge black market in smokes in this city and it came just in time because prostitution and gambling profits are way down for the Mafia-they need the money and I’d rather they have it than Bloomberg, Patterson or Øbama.
