Unstable political situation in Madagascar - DOS tells non-emergency personnel to leave
Overseas Security Advisory Council ^ | 11 MARCH 2009 | Consular Sub-Saharan Africa - Madagascar

Posted on 03/11/2009 5:10:51 PM PDT by BCW

U.S. Embassy Antananarivo issued the following Warden Message on March 11:

Due to the unstable political situation in Madagascar, the U.S. Embassy has authorized departure of non-emergency personnel and family members of Embassy employees. Additionally the Peace Corps has decided to send all Madagascar-based Peace Corps volunteers to South Africa and temporarily suspend their Madagascar program. At this time, the embassy is encouraging non-emergency staff and family members to depart while commercial air is still readily available. We encourage all Americans in Madagascar to monitor the situation closely and consider departing the country while commercial air is still operating normally.

We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid areas of demonstrations. American citizens should monitor media coverage of local events for indications of anti-American sentiments and demonstrations focusing on foreign embassies.

If you decide to leave Madagascar, we ask that you contact the Embassy via e-mail at antanwarden@state.gov to alert us of your departure. By doing so, we can update our records accordingly.

Feb. 11— TANA, Madagascar: Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) staff in Madagascar are asking for prayers as an unstable political situation is poised to turn into widespread civil unrest. The threat of violence has caused LHM-Madagascar to postpone or cancel some ministry events in the Madagascar capital of Antananarivo.

Since the end of January, there have been political demonstrations in opposition to the current President, Marc Ravalomanana. The opposition is headed by the 34-year-old mayor of Antananarivo, Andry Rajoelina, who accuses the President of being a dictator - suppressing and starving his people.

Over the weekend demonstrations grew violent and resulted in the shooting deaths of at least 28 protestors, as they marched towards the presidential palace. The situation remains tense as the political stand-off continues.

“We ask God, that He intervenes and saves our country from the present situation,” said Jaona Andrianasolo, the director for LHM-Madagascar.

LHM-Madagascar was established in 2000. LHM’s local staff and volunteers reach out with the Gospel message using public performances, music concerts and Bible Correspondence Courses (BCC). The ministry also translates the BCC lessons and topical booklets from the official language of French into the local Malagasy language to reach more people.

Your continued prayers and support for LHM allow outreach programs to have an impact all around the world. We ask that you prayerfully conside

Basically a coup going on. The opposition leader, Andry Rajoelina is trying to overthrow the corrupt Marc Ravalomanana.

Ravalomanana is described as pro-business. He took over after 21 years of Marxist rule. Rajoelina is one of those Marxists.
