I thinks it's one wone now (Harrison Tyler at VaTech), but even so, to be able to say "My grandfather was born in 1790 is...well... unbelievable.

I have a first cousin at 2 removes whose father in law (one of my Great Great Grandfather's) served in the Civil War.

This is hardly unbelievable ~ but still rare.

He could very well have known Tyler personally!

Wow. That is insane.

John Tyler’s first wife died while he was President. He then married 24 year old Julia Gardiner two years later.

Can you imagine if a 54 year old President married a 24 year debutante in today’s world?

i’m calling shananagins. if tyler was born in 1790 and didn’t have a child unitl say 1840 (at 50yrs old) and then that child waited until 50 years old (1890) to have this child that would make this man 119 yrs old? anyone have specific dates?

Tyler was 54 when he married a 24 year old woman (in 1844). His son Lyon was born in 1853, when Tyler was 63 and his wife was 33.

Lyon Tyler was 68 in 1921 when he married his second wife, who was 32 at the time. Harrison Tyler, the President’s grandson, was born in 1928.

He is still alive.

if those dates and ages are correct then i stand corrected. thank you for the info. i was using ages that would have seemed more plausible. but then my grandfather had his last when he was about 70 or 72 so i guess it works. lol

Yeah, I’m from a Southern family as well and one of my Grandfather’s half brothers is two years younger than me.

Tyler, by the way, had 15 legitimate children. That is insane in today’s world, but wasn’t too uncommon back then.

The last three widows of Civil War Vets have died within the last several years. 2001 I believe. I used to keep up on remaining true sons of CW vets. Not many left.

Has the grandson any issue?

Unless he plays in the NBA!

Not sure about which grandson it is, but one of them has at least one son. They were interviewed on C-Span’s “American Presidents” series back in 2000. Fascinating! See:

Marry? Yeah, I told her that I would right after I divorced Hillary.

Change some numbers. Tyler was 54 when he married a woman 24 and could easily have had a child 10 years later, etc. Still pretty old for a grandson but not unreasonable.
