2 arrested in FBI raid at Obama appointee's office
WTOP News ^ | March 12, 2009 | unk.

WASHINGTON - Two officials in the D.C.'s Office of the Chief Technology Officer have been arrested in a federal bribery sting, sources tell WTOP.

D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer employees Sushil Bansal and 40-year-old Yusuf Acar have been arrested, sources tell WTOP.

Acar was taken into custody Thursday morning by FBI agents at his home in Northwest D.C.

The FBI is now serving a search warrant at the office of D.C.'s Chief Technology Officer, WTOP has learned.

"We are there as part of a continuing ongoing criminal investigation," FBI Washington Field Office spokesperson Katherine Schweit tells WTOP.

Schweit would not comment on the details of the investigation.

More than a dozen FBI agents - including evidence technicians - at the office, located at 1 Judiciary Square on 4th Street in Northwest, WTOP's Mark Segraves reports.

Most of the employees have been told to go home. Other employees have been segregated into a waiting room.

Segraves reports the FBI's search has expanded from 9th floor offices to 10th floor offices.

A spokesman for D.C.'s U.S. Attorney tells WTOP he cannot discuss the investigation, as it is currently sealed.

On March 5, President Barack Obama named D.C. Chief Technology Officer Vivek Kundra as the federal government's chief information officer.

Kundra's last day was March 4.

Kundra, who was in charge of technology in the District since 2007, has been a consultant to Obama since he won the election.

Obama signed some executive order about how “science” was to be used, instead of “politics” on important decisions.

It seems, however, that Obama’s “scientists” are crooks!

"Barack Obama says that the U.S. is not doing nearly enough to create jobs through technology. Shortly after he launched his campaign, the Illinois Senator promised that if elected, he would create the first-ever Cabinet-level post of chief technology officer. The economic crisis has since made it certain that a White House CTO would become one of Obama's most important advisers, should he triumph in November. "Obama sees greater broadband penetration as an enormous economic engine, much like the railroads were a century ago," says Andrew D. Lipman, a veteran communications lawyer in Washington. "That is why the CTO will play such a critical role in any recovery plan." "

When Hillary Clinton appears to be one of the two appointees in the Obama regime who isn't apparently 'dirty' with scandal, you just gotta bury your face in a pillow and cry.

This is confusing because it’s poorly written. Kundra WAS chief technology officer until March 4; now he’s chief information officer as of March 5? Thus, he’s no longer associated with the office that was raided? If so, the raid wasn’t “at Obama appointee’s office” but at his former office. Am I right, or am I missing something?

Thus, he’s no longer associated with the office that was raided? If so, the raid wasn’t “at Obama appointee’s office” but at his former office. Am I right, or am I missing something? He/She only left 8 days ago. Plus he/she has been an advisor to ZERO since before the immaculate election. SO .. chances are good that the impropriety was going on while he/she (I mean seriously .. who names their kid "Kundra," and is he/she a male or female?) was head of the office. It doesn't necessarily mean that Kundra is part of the impropiety, but it will be fun to see what comes of it nonetheless. I mean, this is yet another DimoRAT Administration that told us that THIS will be "the most ethical .." after which they nominated tax cheats, Lobbyists, and now ..? All I know is that the first 52 days of this UH-dministration has been an absolute hoot (and yet the scariest, most disturbing thing I've ever seen)!

Yeah...meantime...we’ve got a drug war coming across our border and O demotes from his cabinet his appointed Drug Czar. Says his appointee will focus on addiction and prevention rather than enforcement and prosecution. Genius.

This is confusing because it’s poorly written.

Agreed. It's very badly written. The following items shed only slightly more light on the story:

FBI Raid, Lockdown at OCTO, One Judiciary Square
FBI agents are searching the One Judiciary Square offices of the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer this morning. The FBI is being tight lipped about what they are searching for, telling Politico only that the search is part of "an ongoing investigation." WTOP's Mark Segraves has been Twittering from the scene, adding that agents have since moved from the 9th floor OCTO offices to the 10th floor of One Judiciary Square, which houses the Office of the Attorney General. Some employees in the building have been sent home, according to Segraves.

The Washington Post is reporting that an arrest has been made: Yusuf Acar, 40, an information systems security officer for the OCTO, was reportedly taken into custody at his D.C. home this morning by federal agents. Acar had worked for Vivek Kundra, D.C.'s former chief technology officer who was recently named President Obama's federal chief information officer.

FBI raids office of D.C. CTO, Obama appointee
Federal agents this morning are searching the Judiciary Square office of Washington, D.C.'s Chief Technology Officer.

The search is part of "an ongoing investigation," said a spokeswoman for the FBI's D.C. Field Office, Lindsay Gotwin, said. She declined to comment further.

The outgoing Chief Technology Officer, Vivek Kundra, was appointed last week Chief Information Officer by the Obama administration.

"We know the FBI is over there but that's all we know," said a staffer in the D.C. CTO's office, Mario Field, who was working from a separate location. Another source familiar with the raid said the FBI had sent all staffers other than senior executives home for the day.

A White House spokesman had no immediate comment.

A spokeswoman for Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, Leslie Kershaw, said "Our office has been alerted of FBI's being at CTO office, but we cannot comment until it's over and we get more details."

The new position Kundra was slated to fill in the administration is another one of those "czar" jobs Obama is bringing inside the White House. In this move, Obama was getting control of the federal information systems. Scary stuff.

Kundra Named Federal Chief Information Officer
At the beginning of February, D.C.'s Chief Technology Officer, Vivek Kundra, was reportedly the choice of the Obama administration as the new Office of Management and Budget administrator for e-government and information technology. But this morning he's been bumped up, with an announcement from President Obama that Kundra will become the nation's first Federal Chief Information Officer.

"Vivek Kundra will bring a depth of experience in the technology arena and a commitment to lowering the cost of government operations to this position," Obama said in a statement. "I have directed him to work to ensure that we are using the spirit of American innovation and the power of technology to improve performance and lower the cost of government operations. As Chief Information Officer, he will play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most secure, open, and efficient way possible."

Kundra was previously rumored to be on the shortlist for Federal Chief Technology Officer. The Post is quoting sources saying that Obama plans to appoint a chief technology officer who will work closely with Kundra. Both newly created positions will operate out of the White House.

Acar is an information security officer who was also, according to online requests for proposals, responsible for contracting. Bansal is listed on the city’s procurement website as the CEO of the Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation, which was awarded two technology contracts last year worth a total of $350,000.

“We know the FBI is over there but that’s all we know,” said a staffer in the D.C. CTO’s office, Mario Field, who was working from a separate location. Another source familiar with the raid said the FBI had sent all staffers other than senior executives home for the day. WTOP reported that agents are searching the 9th and 10th floors of the building.

A White House spokesman had no immediate comment.
