Posted on 03/12/2009 1:07:03 PM PDT by Red Steel
WASHINGTON GOP national chairman Michael Steele said Thursday that he's opposed to abortion and that Roe v. Wade should be repealed, commenting a day after a magazine quoted him as saying abortion was "an individual choice." Steele clarified his stance in a written statement after online publication of the interview with GQ magazine.
Steele, who is adopted, said in the interview that his mother had the option of getting an abortion or giving birth.
He said: "You can choose life, or you can choose abortion." He said his mother chose life.
Asked whether he thought women had the right to choose abortion, Steele said: "Yeah. I mean, again, I think that's an individual choice."
Steele was elected chairman of the National Republican Committee in January. He describes himself as "prolife."

Steele is rusted through.
Steele = Rubber
Steele needs to shut his yap to the press and start working on the house of the GOP.
Every time he talks he’s gotta clarify either to become politically correct or to cover his tracks so he doesn’t look like a RINO. Then when he does he has to go back and clarify it again or apologize.
Clean up in aisle two.
He’s definitely showing his ‘flexibility’, that’s for sure.
It’s about time for Steele to exit stage right... Uhhh! stage left!!
Just waiting for the clarification of his clarification from this moron.
Yes, his mother could have chosen to get an ILLEGAL abortion. Back when it was considered MURDER to kill your unborn child.
What a putz.
clarification of the day
now back to being in their faces
“Roe v. Wade should remain in place. (Oct 2006)”
Pro-life, but we have to live with 33 years of reality. (Mar 2006)”
Steele is a poser and a fake!
Time to scrap Steele!
See, if he were competent, he wouldn’t need to clarify anything.
Why would a pro-life conservative give another nickel to the RNC?
I’m trying to think of a reason...
He’s like an old Jerry Lewis movie.
Whether Steele will be given a reprieve from the knives out for him will be determined by whether Jim Tedisco holds on to win the House seat in NY State after he has been ahead in the polls most of the way. If he loses Steele may be toast.
Who vetted this guy? We have no right to talk about the Dems’ lax vetting process when ours is just as weak.
NO MORE RINOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve never seen a TRUE Conservative have to “clarify” their position on ANYTHING.
If you have to qualify and quibble, your argument and your commitment is lacking.
One cannot “clarify” his position on abortion: he is either for extermination of children in the womb or he is not. There is no middle ground.
MD hasn’t produced anyone good since Agnew. Oh, wait, he wasn’t so good either!
Steele must have graduated at the top of his class from the John McCain School of Liberal Moderation.
Steele Needs to go away! I do not recall voting for that RINO.
Of course having an abortion is an individual choice ~ a bad choice in fact ~ something that will always send you to Hell since, after all, your target was totally innocent.
Just the way it is.
I do not recall ever hearing this former seminary student advocating abortion. On the other hand, we have a President who thinks it's never too late to kill babies. His Democrat predecessor, Billzo Clinton, is still not sure how fertilization happens.
“Flexibility is the key to indecision”
I saw that on a bathroom wall many years ago and have found it to be very true!
RNC Chair is a RINO, he is pro-choice and anti-gun rights.
He helped start a group with Wittmen for pro-choice moderate republicans. The RNC ignored conservatives with their choice of Steele.
“On the other hand, we have a President who thinks it’s never too late to kill babies. His Democrat predecessor, Billzo Clinton, is still not sure how fertilization happens.”
Also a good point about Steele, but it will be used to hammer the GOP and that isn’t good.
Trying to jump a Great White is never smart and seldom works out for the jumper. LOL!!
Steele is amazing.
He continues to make one gaff after another.
He should qualify in the Joe Biden Sound-a-Like Contest.
Is he the BEST the GOP has to offer????
Who will he insult next? Gun-owners?? Anti-illegal alien people??
The simplest ideas are usually the best ideas. Probably why the GOP elite don’t get it.
He needs to shut up, get in the background and do his job. But I think he is a media whore.
We may have to obamatize Steele and make him speak only when there’s a teleprompter in front of him.
If Steele partnered with that idiot Chrissie Whitman and her bagman in their PAC to back “moderate” Republicans and oppose people like Oliver North, I will continue to dump requests for support from the National GOP into the recycling.
WHitman is so far left she should join the Socialist Party. Guess nobody told her rich jerks can be leftists. She should meet with Soros for some pointers.
Initially I thought he was pretty good. But as time goes on, he becomes more more inept.
We need a Chair like Duncan Hunter or Newt Gingrich.
This explains a lot why Der-Erlich made him ass-gov. Der-Erlich was a pro-murder Repub, and we took him as being as good as we could get, accepting that Rusty was pro-life.
This is why I no longer claim to be a Republican and only claim conservatism. This is also why I refuse to eat the doodoo sandwiches the Republican National Commitee want to feed us.
I am done accepting 25 years of “As good as we can get”. You either give me the candidate I want, or you don’t get my vote.
Duncan Hunter would be fine, but Newt has been getting a little flaky on some issues lately.
The only thing saving those guys right now is their soft core porn.
Good point. I have never been known for an excess of patience. :)
Steele was simply saying one can choose life, or one can choose death (abortion). He has always made it clear he is pro life. His words are being twisted to put him at odds with the conservative base as a phony controversy. The left is always good at this.
The GOP seems trying to neuter abortion in National elections considering all the pro-choice Governors. Maybe it’s part of a 50 State solution to break out of the Bible belt and the corn belt. Guiliani, the waste, was leading the pack at one time. A lot of the GOP is willing to throw abortion under the campaign bus.
I think I’ve heard enough from Steele.
I think it's time for a credentials test~!
Is there a reason a Republican cannot unabashedly say what he means and not have to do the weasel-word rumba with the MSM?
Steele is for abortion and should be fired from the RNC.
Steele is pro-abort. He must go.
That would be awesome.
Steele is Whitman’s manservant.
