INDIANAPOLIS — Police say an 18-year-old Indianapolis man severely beat his girlfriend's 14-month-old daughter because the girl failed to show respect.

Tayaun Chism was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent and child abuse in the beating of Lilliana Goodman.

Police Sgt. Paul Thompson says Chism is accused of beating the girl with a belt for more than an hour for being disrespectful and not eating her food.

The sad reality is that even a biological father might be abusive but the potential for abuse increases dramatically when the “parent” is not the child’s true parent. Of course, there are certainly very loving people out there that would take in another as if he/she were their own. This isn’t about them.

I’ve known a few women who have said they would not remarry until their children were out of high school because of this very reason.
