Could marijuana be the answer to the economic misery facing California? Democratic State Assembly member Tom Ammiano thinks so. Ammiano introduced legislation last month that would legalize pot and allow the state to regulate and tax its sale - a move that could mean billions for the cash-strapped state. Pot is, after all, California's biggest cash crop, responsible for $14 billion in annual sales, dwarfing the state's second largest agricultural commodity - milk and cream - which brings in $7.3 billion annually, according to the most recent USDA statistics. The state's tax collectors estimate the bill would bring in about $1.3 billion in much-needed revenue a year, offsetting some of the billions in service cuts and spending reductions outlined in the recently approved state budget.

No offense, but marijuana just ain’t that much of a profitable plant. If it’s legalized, anyone could plant it and the price would be 75 cents an ounce.

Now, if you could raise industrial hemp, you could make some money!

Making it legal would lead to anybody growing it. A lot for their own use. That would drive the price down quite a bit.
The real question is how much further can California slide without disappearing into the abyss of the San Andres sin fault can it go?
was society at the lowest common denominator prior to pot being illegal? Do you also wish for alcohol to become illegal since it wreaks more havoc on society than pot does. And again I am not a pot user. I just see the hypocrisy of alcohol being legal and marijuana illegal. Add to that that hemp, at least, has more benefits to society than alcohol does and hemp is illegal too.
I don't know about that. People seem to have no problem paying for fruits & vegetables they could instead grown in their backyards.
Plus, growing marijuana isn't that easy, especially when you account for quality.
And I'm sure California's prison & court budgets could use a breather from locking up people for low-level drug use & possession.

You must be under the impression there's a whole lot of people out there who'd like to smoke pot but don't because it's illegal.
Truth is, people who really want to smoke it already do.
Not to beat a dead horse, but only a small percentage of society even tries marijuana once, much less a daily smoker. So, it might actually be a good idea to temporarily legalize marijuana - that’s how it was in the past.
Marijuana, cocane, crack, and meth should all be legalized for one week before the next congressional and presidential elections.
Guess who will be too high to vote!
As Californians circle the drain, they can be sure their elected leaders will reach out one last time to........................ pull the flush handle again.
It is like a science/art and if you follow the process its almost easy,,, from what I’ve been told. Start-up money is the biggest obstacle.

Well, if they treat it like they have cigarettes, legalizing it will cause the cost to go up so much most people will quit.
