Mineral water in plastic bottles contaminated with hormones (Chems act like female hormones in body)
The Local.de ^ | 13 Mar 09

Scientists at Frankfurt University have shown that mineral water in plastic bottles is contaminated with chemicals which act like female hormones in the body.

A research project in conjunction with the German Environment Ministry showed that some were as contaminated as water from sewage works for the oestrogen-like substances.

Martin Wagner, who worked on the study, said in a statement, “When we started the work we did not expect to find such a massive oestrogen contamination in a foodstuff which is so strictly controlled.”

The scientists examined 20 different brands of mineral waters, 12 of which displayed heightened hormone content.

Feh.

This is nothing more than a German pseudo-science attack on the global giant American-made Nalgene bottles.

Pepsi has announced that they are bringing back sugar sweetened sodas!

Hey, they were the first to use HFCS! It forced Coca-Cola to follow suit. So maybe we'll get the original coke back too. Hope. Hope.

This is a bogus study!!!!! First of all the headline includes “Hormones” they are calling the contaminates an estrogen “like”
contaminate
. The wacky left has been after the bottle water industry and more specifically the plastic industry for decades.
BPA is a chemical used in PVC pipes(same as we all have in our homes)polycarbonate bottles, baby bottles and can liners (not PET like described in the article).

Some studies indicate it can leach into the product at very low (still FDA acceptable levels) if the container is heated above 180 degrees like what could happen from excessive microwaving or boiling in water. Anyone that gives a bottle of milk or other product heated above 180 degrees is going to have a much greater issue than BPA..... like severe burns from the heat of the contents.

FDA allows food-contact plastics for their intended use based on safety data. The process includes stringent requirements for estimating the levels at which such materials may transfer to the diet. FDA’s safety criteria require extensive toxicity testing for any substance that may be ingested at more than negligible levels. This means FDA has affirmatively determined that, when plastics are used as intended in food-contact applications, the nature and amount of substances that may migrate, if any, are safe.

Here is a good conspiracy nugget. GE owned both NBC and GE Plastics which was the worlds largest supplier of Polycarbonate (Lexan). Five months after selling the GE Plastics Unit to a Saudi Arabian company, Matt Laurer (employee of GE) does a hit piece on Polycarbonate and BPA.

They did not allow the the new owners of GE Plastics or anyone else from the plastics industry to appear on the show to defend this so called evil product that is used in millions of products from medical devices too hockey helmets.

Matt's parent company felt completely fine selling the product for the last several decades. Did they know something and dump it on the Saudis? Yes they did they knew it was safe but saw the writing on the wall and dumped it.

The left went after polycarbonate in the early nineties then saying it was a cancer causer. Unable to make that stick they moved on to the latest creative threat artificial hormones! They inject rats with high levels of BPA (we are talking about a chemical that may be “ingested at very low levels (Parts Per Billions) not injected at thousands of times exposure levels.

One would have to drink 66,000 liters of water per day to reach the FDA allowable limit. Failing to get anywhere with this they have moved on to a new tactic. Their studies show very low levels could be a problem. They tack it to early onset puberty and I have even seen the attempt to suggest it may cause autism. My guess is this looked like the next holy grail for the Bar Association.

For more information on scientific studies Google the National Drinking Water Foundation and Bottle Water Matters.

Also Enjoybottledwater.org The 2nd two websites have petitions please sign them. Another attempt to attack a very healthy safe and in demand product in the effort to crush private sector jobs in favor of tap water, union workers and pseudo environmentalists.

The Bottled Water Industry has donated millions of dollars of product to Katrina and other natural disasters as well as Man made disasters such as 911.
God forbid San Francisco has another earthquake....municipal water systems don't run without electricity.

Thanks. That’s a great summary of how bogus this is. A total fraud. I’m sure if you dig deep enough you will find one of the major sponsors of this “research” is a group of tort lawyers. Just watch, they will now proceed to sue the plastics and bottle manufacturers for “damages” based on this frivolous trash passing itself off as science.

I sure wish I could go back in time and get a Coke made with real cane sugar (grass juice) in a beautiful green glass bottle.

There are all kinds of sugar-sweetened colas on the market in glass bottles - they just aren't named "Coke". Boylan Cane Cola, as an example, is outstanding - far better tasting than any Coke or Pepsi product ever made.

Several years ago I investigated the research at the time on bisphenol A. And yes, certain types of plastics leach biphenol A and pthalates. Based on the research at that time and my personal investigation regarding xenoestrogens, I stopped drinking bottled waters and sodas, stopped heating any of my foods in/on plastic in the microwave.

People thought I was weird at the time, but it is bearing out to be true.

The problem is this stuff is pervasive in our modern world. You will find it in your canned foods too, unless you do your own mason jar canning. It's in lotions, makeups, shampoos, soaps....

I think this is what has affected our young peoples sexual identity issues.

One study at the time was a cancer study.

They were testing some chemical and for weeks it had bore out that it was non-carcinogenic. Then ...someone ordered new plastic petri dishes. And they found cancer growing in their cultures where it had not before. Further investigation indicated it was not the test chemical, but a leachate from the plastic petri dish.

As someone up thread has said, our ingestion of this stuff is below the FDA levels. What is not accounted for is all other forms of combined exposure.

bisphenol A is BAD juju; about as bad as it gets in today’s consumer world.

DO NOT microwave ANY plastic ware. EVEN the dishes food comes in. Switch to glass.

DO NOT put the ANY plastic stuff (even those pans Marie Calendars stuff comes in) in the oven.

DO NOT use soft baby bottles. (the big mfgrs have said they are going to remove bisphenol A from their products but I do not believe them)

While I am at it get rid of all your teflon coated pans. Next worst juju

Most of the great civilizations, people rarely drank water. They drank wine, beer, or tea. In other words, their water either had alcohol in it, or was boiled.

That seems to solve one of the main problems of organizing a civilization: setting up an urban center (dense population), and securing clean water protected from the effluents that come from a lot of people in close proximity.

Of course, there are new and different variations of the problem now. One possible distinction --- here I'm just musing or speculating --- would be between women's naturally-occurring estrogens on the one hand, and estrogenic chemicals used in oral contraceptives and hormone-replacement therapies on the other. Women's naturally-occuring estrogens are at a level normal for the body and quite complexly in-sync with other hormones, metabolic products and catalysts. The healthy body knows how to use or metabolize them effectively.

On the other hand, even HRT estrogen can put women's bodies seriously out-if-whack. Females my age have been really whiplashed by the controversies over the past 20 years: women who faithfully and conscientiously "treated" menopause on their doctor's advice, found themselves at elevated risk for pulmonary embolism, coronary heart disease and stroke, even greater risk of osteoporosis (which it was supposed to prevent or cure). And then they kept re-jiggering the dosages and tweaking the formulations to add varying amounts of progesterone and even testosterone, etc.

One's evaluation of it depends on what one considers to be "optimal, normal" menopause, which has never been adequately defined ---or even whether menopause itself is considered a healthy phase or a regrettabke and reversible symptom of aging and decline.

It's even more striking with OC's, where the purpose of the hormone is to thwart what are clearly healthy and natural physiological processes. My hypothesis is that deliberately disrupting normal cycles interferes with the body's ability to regulate levels; hence the body just tries to excrete the excess.

That's just my guess.

Most Coke sold overseas seems to retain the original taste (as remembered over many decades). The modern American stuff.. well...

Well you can’t get Coke, but Goose Island makes sugar sweetened sodas, root beer, orange, and grape. I had one awhile back I got at Hy-Vee, they’re like being 5 years old again. Their beer is good too.

OK name the study and produce a link to it.
Don't worry the GOV's going solve this trumped up crisis.
Feinstein just introduced a bill to ban it in all food contact packaging.
Checkmate! This is going to crush the small bottled water companies that use polycarbonate reusable bottles for their product.
This will cut the field to a few large companies...nice work champion of small business. The left wing wackos such as NDRC are all ready lined up to go after the alternative plastics as well. Boys this is about Petrolium related products! A few villafied products come to mind cyclamates, silicone breast implants etc....
Ban first ask questions later.
Bottled water has not resulted in any verified illness to a single American. The same can not be said of tap water.

A coworker of mine at the time (HIV positive) died from the Milwaukee outbreak of cryptosporidium in the 90's along with many others. Big surprise BPA is in PVC pipes. Guess what Government water system has millions of miles of PVC pipes?

How many home owners have PVC pipes. Sounds like a new crisis coming!

No legitimate studies have proved any of the claims about this material being harmful as normally used.
