Cultural Marxism

There are two misconceptions held by many Americans. The first is that communism ceased to be a threat when the Soviet Union imploded. The second is that the New Left of the Sixties collapsed and disappeared as well. “The Sixties are dead,” wrote columnist George Will (”Slamming the Doors,” Newsweek, Mar. 25, 1991).

Because the New Left lacked cohesion, it fell apart as a political movement. However, its revolutionaries reorganized themselves into a multitude of single-issue groups. Thus we now have for example, radical feminists, black extremists, anti-war ‘peace’ activists, animal rights groups, radical environmentalists, and ‘gay’ rights groups. All of these groups pursue their piece of the radical agenda through a complex network of organizations such as the Gay Straight Lesbian Educators Network (GSLEN), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), People for the American Way, United for Peace and Justice, Planned Parenthood, Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), and Code Pink for Peace.

Both communism and the New Left are alive and thriving here in America. They favor code words: tolerance, social justice, economic justice, peace, reproductive rights, sex education and safe sex, safe schools, inclusion, diversity, and sensitivity. All together, this is Cultural Marxism disguised as multiculturalism.

Birth of Multiculturalism

In anticipation of the revolutionary storm that would baptize the world in an inferno of red terror, leading to its rebirth as the promised land of social justice and proletarian equality-Friedrich Engels wrote,

“All the...large and small nationalities are destined to perish...in the revolutionary world storm... (A general war will) wipe out all...nations, down to their very names. The next world war will result in the disappearance from the face of the earth not only reactionary classes...but...reactionary peoples.” (”The Magyar Struggle,” Neue Rheinische Zeitung, Jan. 13, 1849)

By the end of WWI, socialists realized that something was amiss, for the world’s proletariat had not heeded Marx’s call to rise up in opposition to evil capitalism and to embrace communism instead. They wondered what had gone wrong.

Separately, two Marxist theorists - Antonio Gramsci of Italy and Georg Lukacs of Hungary - concluded that the Christianized West was the obstacle standing in the way of a communist new world order. The West would have to be conquered first. Gramsci posited that because Christianity had been dominant in the West for over 2000 years, not only was it fused with Western civilization, but it had corrupted the working class. The West would have to be de-Christianized, said Gramsci, by means of a “long march through the culture.” Additionally, a new proletariat must be created. In his “Prison Notebooks,” he suggested that the new proletariat be comprised of many criminals, women, and racial minorities.

The new battleground, reasoned Gramsci, must become the culture, starting with the traditional family and completely engulfing churches, schools, media, entertainment, civic organizations, literature, science, and history. All of these things must be radically transformed and the social and cultural order gradually turned upside-down with the new proletariat placed in power at the top.

The Prototype

In 1919, Georg Lukacs became Deputy Commissar for Culture in the short-lived Bolshevik Bela Kun regime in Hungary. He immediately set plans in motion to de- Christianize Hungary. Reasoning that if Christian sexual ethics could be undermined among children, then both the hated patriarchal family and the Church would be dealt a crippling blow. Lukacs launched a radical sex education program in the schools. Sex lectures were organized and literature handed out which graphically instructed youth in free love (promiscuity) and sexual intercourse while simultaneously encouraging them to deride and reject Christian moral ethics, monogamy, and parental and church authority. All of this was accompanied by a reign of cultural terror perpetrated against parents, priests, and dissenters.

Hungary’s youth, having been fed a steady diet of values-neutral (atheism) and radical sex education, while being simultaneously encouraged to rebel against all authority, easily turned into delinquents ranging from bullies and petty thieves to sex predators, murderers, and sociopaths.

Gramsci’s prescription and Lukacs’ plans were the precursor to what Cultural Marxism in the guise of SIECUS, GSLEN, and the ACLU - acting as judicially-powered enforcers - later brought into American schools.

Building a Base

In 1923, the Frankfurt School - a Marxist think-tank - was founded in Weimar Germany. Among its founders were Georg Lukacs, Herbert Marcuse, and Theodor Adorno. The school was a multidisciplinary effort which included sociologists, sexologists, and psychologists.

The primary goal of the Frankfurt School was to translate Marxism from economic terms into cultural terms. It would provide the ideas on which to base a new political theory of revolution based on culture, harnessing new oppressed groups for the faithless proletariat. Smashing religion and morals, it would also build a constituency among academics, who could build careers studying and writing about the new oppression.

Toward this end, Marcuse - who favored polymorphous perversion - expanded the ranks of Gramsci’s new proletariat by including homosexuals, lesbians, and transsexuals. Into this was spliced Lukacs’ radical sex education and cultural terrorism tactics. Gramsci’s ‘long march’ was added to the mix, and then all of this was wedded to Freudian psychoanalysis and psychological conditioning techniques. The end product was Cultural Marxism, now known in the West as multiculturalism.

Additional intellectual firepower was required: a theory to pathologize what was to be destroyed. In 1950, the Frankfurt School augmented Cultural Marxism with Theodor Adorno’s idea of the ‘authoritarian personality.’ This concept is premised on the notion that Christianity, capitalism, and the traditional family create a character prone to racism and fascism. Thus, anyone who upholds America’s traditional moral values and institutions is both racist and fascist. Children raised by traditional values parents, we are told to believe, will almost certainly become racists and fascists. By extension, if fascism and racism are endemic to America’s traditional culture, then everyone raised in the traditions of God, family, patriotism, gun ownership, or free markets is in need of psychological help.

The pernicious influence of Adorno’s ‘authoritarian personality’ idea can be clearly seen in some of the research that gets public money,

“In Aug. 2003, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced the results of their $1.2 million tax-payer funded study. It stated, essentially, that traditionalists are mentally disturbed. Scholars from the Universities of Maryland, California at Berkeley, and Stanford had determined that social conservatives...suffer from ‘mental rigidity,’ ‘dogmatism,’ and ‘uncertainty avoidance,’ together with associated indicators for mental illness.” (http://www.edwatch.org/ “Social and Emotional Learning” Jan. 26, 2005)

The Orwellian cast of the pathologies named shows how far Gramsci’s long march has led us.

A corresponding and diabolically crafted idea is political correctness. The strong suggestion here is that in order for one not to be thought of as racist or fascist, then one must not only be nonjudgmental but must also embrace the ‘new’ moral absolutes: diversity, choice, sensitivity, sexual orientation, and tolerance. Political correctness is a Machiavellian psychological ‘command and control’ device. Its purpose is the imposition of uniformity in thought, speech, and behavior.

Critical theory is yet another psychological ‘command and control’ device. As stated by Daniel J. Flynn,

“Critical Theory, as its name implies, criticizes. What deconstruction does to literature, Critical Theory does to societies.” (Intellectual Morons, p 15-16)

Critical Theory is an ongoing and brutal assault via vicious criticism relentlessly leveled against Christians, Christmas, the Boy Scouts, Ten Commandments, our military, and all other aspects of traditional American culture and society.

Both political correctness and Critical Theory are in essence, psychological bullying. They are the psycho-political battering rams by which Frankfurt School disciples such as the ACLU are forcing Americans to submit to and to obey the will and the way of the Left. These devious devices are but psychological versions of Georg Lukacs and Laventi Beria’s ‘cultural terrorism’ tactics. In the words of Beria,

“Obedience is the result of force...Force is the antithesis of humanizing actions. It is so synonymous in the human mind with savageness, lawlessness, brutality, and barbarism, that it is only necessary to display an inhuman attitude toward people to be granted by those people the possessions of force.” (The Russian Manual on Psychopolitics: Obedience, by Laventi Beria, head of Soviet Secret Police and Stalin’s right-hand man)

Double-thinking ‘fence-sitters’, otherwise known as moderates, centrists, and RINOs bear the imprint of these psychological ‘obedience’ techniques. These people - in some cases literally afraid of incurring the wrath of name-calling obedience trainers - have opted to straddle the fence lest they be found guilty of possessing an opinion, one way or another. At the merest hint of displeasure from the obedience-trainers, up goes the yellow flag of surrender upon which it is boldly written:

“I believe in nothing and am tolerant of everything!”

Cultural Determinism

The linchpin of Cultural Marxism is cultural determinism, the parent of identity politics and group solidarity. In its turn, cultural determinism was birthed by the Darwinian idea that man is but a soulless animal and therefore his identity is determined by, for example, his skin color or his sexual and/or erotic preferences. This proposition rejects the concepts of the human spirit, individuality, free will, and morally informed conscience (paired with personal accountability and responsibility) because it emphatically denies the existence of the God of the Bible.

Consequently, and by extension, it also rejects the first principles of our liberty enumerated in the Declaration of Independence. These are our “unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Cultural Marxism must reject these because these principles of liberty “are endowed by our Creator,” who made man in His image. Cultural determinism, states David Horowitz, is

“Identity politics - the politics of radical feminism, queer revolution, and Afro-centrism - which is the basis of academic multiculturalism...a form of intellectual fascism and, insofar as it has any politics, of political fascism as well.” (Mussolini and Neo-Fascist Tribalism: Up from Multiculturalism, by David Horowitz, Jan. 1998)

It is said that courage is the first of the virtues because without it fear will paralyze man, thus keeping him from acting upon his moral convictions and speaking truth. Thus bringing about a general state of paralyzing fear, apathy, and submission - the chains of tyranny - is the purpose behind psychopolitical cultural terrorism, for the communist Left’s revolutionary agenda must, at all costs, be clothed in darkness.

The antidote is courage and the light of truth. If we are to win this cultural war and reclaim and rebuild America so our children and their children’s children can live in a ‘Shining City on the Hill’ where liberty, families, opportunity, free markets, and decency flourish, we must muster the courage to fearlessly expose the communist Left’s revolutionary agenda to the Light of Truth. Truth and the courage to speak it will set us free.

There’s a lot of confusion as to what Marxism actually is.

Marxism is a worldview. Actually, it is a subsection under the worldview called Secular Humanism.

The answer to the four basic questions all humans ask will be the outline for the worldview; worldview being the basic assumptions of life that all information is filtered through before digestion.

The four questions are:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What's wrong with the world?
How can what's wrong with the world be made right.

Christianity would be a worldview that answers those questions from a Theistic assumption.
Secular Humanism, and all of its subgroups, would answer it from an Anti-Theistic assumption.

The worldview will be guided by its views in five catagories. They are:
1) View of God
2) View of man
3) View of truth
4) View of knowledge
5) View of ethics

I think you’re argument is semantic, then. After all, what is called “Darwinism” today bears little resemblance to actual Darwin-style Darwinism. Same way with Marxism - the philosophy has evolved beyond its Hegelian roots as it has been expounded by later “thinkers.”

Spirited Irish: You’re absolutely right. The advanced understanding of human psyche they utilize is based on man’s fallen nature. In short, they ‘lead into temptation and sin’ in order to enslave and reduce man to the level of beast.

Marxism should be seen in context as a 19th century Materialist response to Hegel.

Spirited: While it is a materialized version of Hegel’s dialect, we need to dig deeper and begin with the fact that Hegel was a pantheist and his dialectic was a magic-formula based on the idea of divinized and/or immanitized history. In other words, history is a ‘divinized entity’ that predetermines specific events and outcomes.

Pantheism is paganism, or more specifically, it’s monism, the ancient idea that all things are ‘one’ with and/or merely extensions of divinized nature. In this system, man loses his individuality; he disappears into and becomes ‘one with’ Nature.

Monism is like a coin, it has two sides. One side is pantheism and the other side is materialism. Hence Marx’s materialism is paganism disguised as science. By extension, dialectical materialism is both immanitized matter (divinized matter) and Hegel’s pantheist dialectic materialized.

In his Author’s Introduction to Democracy in America, Tocqueville describes the failure of the French Revolution (pg 7) and, as it so happens, of every modern revolution seeking (ostensibly) to achieve the ideals of democracy and “social equality”:

“In no country in Europe has the great social revolution that I have just described [democracy & social equality] made such rapid progress as in France; but it has always advanced without guidance. The heads of the state have made no preparation for it, and it has advanced without their consent or without their knowledge. The most powerful, the most intelligent, and the most moral classes of the nation have never attempted to control it in order to guide it. Democracy has consequently been abandoned to its wild instincts, and it has grown up like those children who have no parental guidance, who receive their education in the public streets, and who are acquainted only with the vices and wretchedness of society. Its existence was seemingly unknown when suddenly it acquired supreme power. All then servilely submitted to its caprices; it was worshiped as the idol of strength; and when afterwards it was enfeebled by its own excesses, the legislator conceived the rash project of destroying it, instead of instructing it and correcting its vices.”

It strikes me Tocqueville is describing the course and the fate of the 0bama revolution we see sweeping through the American polity, as though he possessed a glass permitting him to gaze from his day to this day. But, many have observed that particular talent residing in this amazing Frenchman.

In the movie Gettysburg there is a scene where a hard-bitten, red-headed sergeant of the Union Army and Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain come across a frightened slave on a deserted battlefield. They pick him up, determine that he is unhurt, send him on his way, and fall into a conversation about freedom and equality. During the course of that conversation the sergeant observes that he is not fighting for equality, but for the opportunity to prove himself “the better man.” That is the nut of the issue. I don’t know if such a conversation ever took place between Gen Chamberlain and one of his NCOs, or if it is a story made of whole cloth, but it is a perfect summation of the American Spirit that Tocqueville so wonderfully describes in his incomparable treatise. It is a spirit that 0bama, and those of his ilk, will never understand, and that men and women such as Frank and Pelosi dare not allow to flourish, for it is a fatal poison to their ambitions.

Thanks for the ping!

Thanks for the ping, spirited irish, and for your insightful peek into Tocqueville’s incomparable observations and eloquence, YHAOS. I am also moved by your reference to Chamberlain’s commentary on equality/freedom in the movie Gettysburg.

My husband and I have been students of the Civil War since both of us were teenagers (I daresay more than forty years ago). Joshua Chamberlain has fascinated us perhaps more than any other participant in that war. One of our most prized possessions is a copy of the book ‘Maine at Gettysburg’, published in 1898, from Chamberlain’s personal library. It is inscribed with his handwritten signature on the first page, ‘Joshua L. Chamberlain, Bvt. Maj. Gen. U.S.A.’

In that book is recorded, among many other fascinating recollections of Maine’s participation at Gettysburg, General Chamberlain’s address at the dedication of the 20th Maine monument in October of 1889, a portion of which follows:

On great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream; and lo! The shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls.

This is the great reward of service. To live, far out and on, in the life of others; this is the mystery of the Christ – to give life’s best for such high sake that it shall be found again unto life eternal.

The situation in which our beloved republic finds herself in early 2009 is tragic beyond comprehension. Some believe the real tragedy lies in the fact that those who played the major role in causing our downfall are now claiming the moral right to author self-serving ‘solutions’ of their own making. They are like an adult child, having administered small doses of arsenic to his mother over a period of time, sitting by her bedside in the hospital, shoving a myriad of papers at her as she lays dying, and demanding that she sign over everything she owns to him, so that he can find her a better doctor.

But as evil as that egregious circumstance is, it pales in comparison to our leadership’s desecration of those about whom Chamberlain spoke.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans, from the last part of the eighteenth century through the first part of the twenty-first, have voluntarily laid down their lives in the name of liberty. I daresay that all of those hundreds of thousands of Americans placed more value on allegiance and duty than any of those now in leadership in Washington.

We know almost none of their names, and yet they purchased with their lives the freedoms that ensured that we transform, with a sense of historically unprecedented conviction, thirteen beleaguered colonies into Ronald Reagan’s shining city on a hill.

And now, fewer than six hundred self-serving scoundrels, incapable of comprehending the powerful measure of love and devotion that wells up within the heart of an American patriot, have succeeded in stealing that precious, hard-won inheritance and turning it into something black, dimensionless, and without a soul. And they are seeing to it that there will be no turning back. Expanding their base. Answering mightily to their special interests. Demonizing, even silencing, their opposition.

And we have no one but the American citizen to blame. His apathy. Ignorance. Self-centeredness. Ingratitude. Hedonism. The fewer than six hundred were placed into power by a band of adoring mental adolescents, who simply want to be allowed to go to the mall, download music/noise, and worship celebrity.

The mall/noise/celebrity fountain will continue to pour forth, while the nuts and bolts of a free society, faith in the Almighty, the sanctity of individual liberty, the concept of personal responsibility, and the belief in reward for thrift, ingenuity and hard work, are being cast aside in deference to gods who are nothing more than the creation of evil men.

The American patriot knows that He expects His followers to hold fast to His teachings, but He does not always promise us earthly victories. More importantly, He prepares a place for His believers, where joy and glory are eternal, and the heartache and pain that the evil of this world creates will become nothing more than a faded memory of a time when men believed they reigned supreme.

[ And we have no one but the American citizen to blame. ]

There lies the rub... Who is an American citizen?..
Any insurgent crossing our borders?.. with wet backs or tickets on an domestic airline?.. anybody that resides in some local area?.. Who is a citizen?..

Now there is a question almost never asked.. At the root lies the "give me your huddled masses" phrase.. Cause that lies at the root of the problem.. and it is a problem.. Huddled masses from every despotic sink hole on the planet as un-controlled insurgents.. Not only from Mexico and greater latin America.. but from Africa, the Mid East and Asia..

People that have only known despotism or anarchy functioning as "citizens".. You know most of the people on this planet.. Imported and watering down the goose that has layed the golden egg.. i.e. America.. Forcing American citizenship on them(amnesty) is blurring the lines of what a citizen even is..

The only logic I can see in it is (them) replacing the millions of lives that abortion has stolen from true citizens.. for economic impact.. Abortion that "the citizens" have burdened themselves with..

And some say abortion is a moral issue.. NO.. I say abortion is an economic issue.. its even a espionage issue.. Espionage in the sense of change to the body politic.. A Trojan Horse issue.. New "citizens" with not a wit of faithfulness to America.. Abortion is the root cause of it.. Americans aborting their next generation.. Who is to replace them?... The aborted CITIZENS?.. Insurgents from the hives of the world.. with a hive mentality.. To whom socialism seems quite normal and healthy.. The test cases are in Europe.. England, France, Germany, the Netherlands.. have become a seething hive..

Thank you oh so very much for your beautiful essay-post, dear joanie-f!

Because the founding of America is Christian, my response to the present situation as described so well in your beautiful essay-post, shall be spiritual.

God's justice is perfect.

Each of us, individually, build the scales whereby we will be judged. (Matthew 7:1-3) And all of our self-serving decisions and deeds will be revisited to us. (e.g. Proverbs 11:27)

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. – Galatians 6:7

Man's sense, on the other hand, is deeply flawed. He says he wants equality or justice when what he really wants is the same break as the next guy. He certainly doesn't want what is coming to him, either spiritually or materially.

Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? - Matthew 20:15

The tab for the folly of material "taking" and redistribution by the present powers-that-be - to achieve a mortal sense of equality - will, under God's justice, ultimately be paid not just by them but by the very ones who granted them those powers.

We've seen this justice play out in many socialist and communist countries. And in the US, for instance, the financial obligation of the growing population of pensioned baby boomers will fall squarely on the heads of the mall denizens who worship celebrity or themselves or any thing other than God.

And the price for the folly of turning this nation away from God by the elected and appointed powers-that-be will be paid by not only by them but also by those who empowered them to drive the very mention of God from public facilities and to force the faithful to contribute to abominations through public funding.

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, [saying], Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. – Psalms 2:1-5

The bottom line is that Christ came to establish a family. Those who would harm even one of His adopted kids will not only not succeed but will find themselves in great spiritual peril.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. - John 1:12-13

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave [them] me, is greater than all; and no [man] is able to pluck [them] out of my Father's hand. - John 10:28-29

We Christians have nothing to fear from anything that happens in this mortal life.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39

But we must keep our priorities straight. Therefore, I aver that American Christians must not despair but rather love God, believe Him, trust Him. Pray without ceasing (- I Thessalonians 5:17).

And as a distant second priority, love our neighbors in a large part by getting to work. Do everything we can to inform them, help them see what has happened, what awaits and help them to understand the true importance of their vote.

To God be the glory!

Thanks for your very thoughtful reply.

Like you, I am an admirer of Gen. Chamberlain. If the nation owes its continued existence to any one man (other than Abraham Lincoln himself), that one man would be Chamberlain. Had the 20th Maine, under his command, not prevented the rebel forces from turning the Union’s left flank, Gettysburg might well have been lost, and along with it, the Union. The movie presents an outstanding dramatization of that action. In fact, I think it the movie’s finest moment.

Before an effective strategic defense can be mounted, the enemy must be clearly identified. On the basis of that claim and in response to a poster who observed, “Marxism should be seen in context as a 19th century Materialist response to Hegel,” I wrote:

Though brief and speaking here of Cultural Marxism, this exposition identifies the metaphysical foundations of All of modernity’s ‘isms’: progressivism, positivism, evolutionism, Marxism, socialism, Bolshevism, Jacobinism, and todays’ variant, dubbed by Fonte as Transnational Progressivism.

Now Steven Plaut has published an evaluative essay in which he writes that Marxism is a pagan religious cult. Read it here:

As I said previously, if we’re to mount an effective attack against this demonic system, we must begin by identifying and exposing its pagan and yes-—superstitious-— foundations. Just as this demonic system has been attacking and destroying the Judeo-Christian foundations of the West, so too must we launch our counter-offensive against its foundations. Only by exposing this evil to the Light of Truth, will it be destroyed.

Thank you so much for your beautiful response, Alamo-Girl.

In just a few short paragraphs, you have constructed a scripturally-based pathway upon which every American Christian must maintain his focus during these troubling times.

And your advice/guidance in your last two paragraphs are words to which we must adhere, no matter the cacophony occurring around us.

We must remain faithful to His teachings, make constant use of the most powerful tool (prayer) with which He has provided us, and never cease to remember that, no matter man's folly, He is in control.

I completely agree with your second ('distant priority') assertion, that we must do all that we can to educate and inform. I have discovered that, especially since the election of Barack Obama, there is just too much to cover anymore in attempting to awaken people to the crimes occurring in Washington. So I have adopted a much simpler, less specific, approach in that I am simply attempting to educate people about the true definition, origin and value of liberty, asking them to look around themselves and determine for themselves in what ways their liberties are being infringed upon, and then determine whether they are worth defending, and how such defense should occur. It has become a monumental task to attempt to inform people about specifics, and I have found that simply urging them to unearth those specifics on their own, and then determine whether, and how, action might be necessary, seems to result in more people responding with other than an overwhelmed, blank stare.

Thank you, again, for your beautiful, God-centered advice. His blessings to you and yours, dear Alamo-Girl!
