FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A third-grader has been suspended from a Fort Lauderdale elementary school after he showed off an unloaded automatic handgun in class.

Broward County School District spokesman Keith Bromery said it's not clear where the 9-year-old got the .380-caliber gun. He showed it to classmates on Tuesday and someone told school administrators. Police were then notified.

The boy could be expelled and sent to an alternative school.

I remember back in first grade I took three guns to school.

Well - Mom helped as I couldn’t handle the old Damascus double barrel, a pump shotgun and Dad’s deer rifle all by myself for show and tell.

Sorry - in keeping with the article, please replace “three guns” with “arsenal”.

I always wonder why a .38 is a .380 on TV and in news papers.

Does that .000 added to the size make it more deadly?

Maybe the spontaneous appearance of 0’s is the “automatic” part.

The automatic handguns are the worst sort, don’t you know. I had one once, but it proved annoying. It didn’t like just sitting around, lying idle. So it would load up its magazine and start firing round after round after round all by itself. But it would clean itself as long as I had adequate supply of nitro solvent, gun oil and patches.

The semi-auto pistol round is a .380. In general, .38 refers to the revolver cartridge with a .357 bullet and sold as the 38 Special or 38SPL. The .380 cartridge head spaces on the case mouth and uses a .354 bullet (9mm). It is sometimes call the 9mm Kurz (short). The .380 bullet weight is typically in the range of 95 gr to 110 gr. The 9mm is usually fitted with 115 gr to 127 gr bullets. The 38SPL bullet weights range from 125 gt to 158 gr. When the .357 bullet is loaded on the .357 magnum brass, the weight typically ranges from 125 gr to 180 gr.

Damn! When I was in the third grade we would shoot tin cans and bottles during recess. This was not a school activity. It was just something we did just like playing baseball was something we did. We brought our own baseballs, gloves, bats, and guns to school.

That was so sweet of him to bring that in for show and tell. I’ll bet the other kids enjoyed that.

The article says he may be sent to an alternative school. His life may be ruined by one innocent if dumb mistake. In an alternative school, he will either become a punching bag and learn to be fearful, or he will learn how to be a thug.

Can’t say that I’d really be pleased if the boys from the hood were bringing guns to elementary school where my kids were attending.

Maybe this will clarify:

Photobucket

Left to Right:

.38 Special = .357" diameter

9mm = .355" diameter

.380 ACP = .356" diameter

"Yes, that said automatic handgun."
Not a mistake. It's intentional. That's an appellation being used in nearly all news articles now, seeking to influence rather than inform.

Notice the gun was unloaded?

That's probably because .380 stuff is almost impossible to get anymore (at least around here).

I have a close friend who works for a gun store. I was asking him about the shortage of .380 ammo. He told me that for some reason, .380 pistols are flying off the shelf... folks are buying them up as fast as the shop can get them in.

My wife has a Bersa Thunder .380. It's okay, but I fail to see the big attraction. I gave her a S&W 642 for Christmas, but she is much more comfortable with the .380 because of the long trigger pull on the DA-only Smith.

I keep telling her:

"Practice, practice, practice."

Then...."Practice some more."

In this case the reporter was correct but here on FR you will read some posts that add a zero in front of the decimal point.

I don’t know why they do that any more than adding the “long” for .45 Colt as if that designated some sort of magnum status to the cartridge.

We’re getting a lot of new gun owners on FR. It’s going to take a lot of time and patience on both sides.

I reload all he center fire cartridges that I use around the house. That info was committed to memory...mostly to help me shop more competently for bullets/brass for my reloading tasks. Reloading is a fun hobby all by itself. If you shoot often, it can save money over factory loaded ammo. Serious target shooters can achieve better consistency and tune the loads (bullet weight, shape), power type and quantity, primer type for better, more consistent results.

I bought a RCBS Supreme kits the day after the election. So far I only have dies and brass for my .243 and .9mm.

I love it but I’m still new and I haven’t gotten as far and custom tuning my rifle rounds yet

Just guessing, but that .380 round looks like a Glaser Pow’R Ball. Did I guess correctly?
