President Barack Obama has announced that many of those held at the Guantánamo Bay facility will no longer be known as "enemy combatants". No word yet on what they will be called instead: "not entirely friendly imprisoned individuals" perhaps? ... Let's pray that there is not another attack on British or American civilian targets (it is bad enough that fundamentalist lunatics target our troops as they try to give the Afghans a chance to reconstruct their country). But if there is such an attack here or in the United States, and it subsequently emerges that one of the ring-leaders had been in US custody and was then released, there will be hell to pay. No amount of professorial explanation from a President who is a liberal lawyer would suffice in such dreadful circumstances. Concerns for the rights of those who have landed up in Guantánamo would go out the window about 10 seconds after a terrorist outrage on US or British soil.

To date, no one has stated that any of the former detainees the Defense Intelligence Agency says returned to the battlefield are here or in Britain.

Yet, last March in Mosul, former detainee Abdullah Salih al Ajmi blew himself up, using 15,000 pounds of explosives loaded in his tanker truck, killing 13 Iragi Army soldiers and wounding 43.

It will happen again here and in Britain and, as usual, the innocent will pay the most hell for our recklessness.

When it does, we will be reminded that 'Never again' are just words when they lack resolve or we let memory fade.
