U.N. Proposal to Criminalize “Defamation of Islam”

From the desk of The Brussels Journal on Thu, 2009-03-12 12:54

A quote from UN Watch, UN Watch, a human rights monitoring organization based in Geneva, denounced a new U.N. resolution circulated today by Islamic states that would define any questioning of Islamic dogma as a human rights violation, […]

UN Watch obtained a copy of the Pakistani-authored proposal after it was distributed today among Geneva diplomats attending the current session of the UN Human Rights Council. Entitled "Combating defamation of religions," it mentions only Islam. […]

“This is an Orwellian text that distorts the meaning of human rights, free speech, and religious freedom, and marks a giant step backwards for liberty and democracy worldwide,” said [UN Watch executive director Hillel] Neuer.

“The first to suffer will be moderate Muslims in the countries that are behind this resolution, like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Pakistan, where state-sanctioned blasphemy laws stifle religious freedom and outlaw conversions from Islam to other faiths,” said Neuer.

“Next to suffer from this U.N.-sanctioned McCarthyism will be writers and journalists in the democratic West, with the resolution targeting the media for the ‘deliberate stereotyping of religions, their adherents and sacred persons.’”

“Ultimately, the very notion of individual human rights is at stake, because the sponsors of this resolution seek not to protect individuals from harm, but rather to shield a specific set of beliefs from any question, debate, or critical inquiry,” said Neuer;”The very term ‘defamation of religion’ is a distortion. The legal concept of defamation protects the reputations of individuals, not beliefs

Can the UN discern the fine distinction between defaming Islam and defining Islam?

Defining islam is defaming islam. They are damned by the truth.

It is impossible and ridiculous to have such religious defamation laws since so many beliefs have clashing views.

One person's faith is another's heresy or blasphemy.

Only in a world of one state religion would such a law make any sense.

The islamists seek to use the UN to impose their will;and why not?The UN has been the tool of totalitarians since its founding.

How do you enforce a law that is entirely premised on cowardice? In His wisdom, God makes fools say foolish things.

I have posted this before but the question still strikes me as valid.

How exactly does one defame, slander or libel the moronic, delusional, miasma of the sewer-born, hateful spewings of a drunken, murderous, child-molesting spawn of a pig as practiced by women-hating, pathological losers who as a group have accomplished nothing of positive note in a thousand years and likely won’t for at least another thousand years?

Really, how?

Yes! We really need to pay our ‘fair share’ to the U.N. so they can continue to operate in the United States and screw us!

Without mentioning pedophilia, female genital mutilation and "honor killings", that's practically a whitewash job. Not nearly defamatory enough... give 'em both barrels (figuratively, of course - though literally... just as good).

This is the last straw. Making the world safe for terrorists and terrorism. If this isnt enough of a reason to kick the UN out of our country and to withdraw from that organization and use that finding for our own people then I dont know what is.

Soon there will only be ‘criminals’ and subjugated.

Adding to this, Islam seeks to kill or convert ‘until religion is only for Allah’ The Koran instructs Muslims:
“AND FIGHT THEM UNTIL THERE IS NO PERSECUTION , AND RELIGION SHALL BE ONLY FOR ALLAH 2:193”

And yet dumbed-down America doesn’t get it- even after 9/11

I wouldn’t put “McCarthyism” in the same league. “McCarthyism” was meant to fight communism and did a good job of it, even though it went a little far at times due to politicians. We need it again for awhile since it set communism in this country back about 60 years. Now we are facing it again.

If you don’t like Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Islam....that’s your business, not the UN’s. The UN needs to mind their own business and quit pushing the New World Order.

That's a great description of the existing text of the UN Declaration of Human Rights (See, for example, Article 22, and many of the ones following.)

McCarthy had the right idea all along just the wrong tactics which was bullying which turned a lot of people against him. He in fact should have allowed the FBI and his own Congress to deal with it the best way they could.

How silly of me. They don't need helmets. ;)

I was thinking about that, as well. It shouldn't be.

This gives us Christians reason for hope, right?, hope that the UN will man up and criminalize defamation of Christianity.

Not! Sadly. Defamation of Christianity is the sport du jour and it's 'cool' to jump on the band wagon.

a new U.N. resolution circulated today by Islamic states that would define any questioning of Islamic dogma as a human rights violation,

Any questioning. Any. Wow, that's bold. And so it goes. Now, we know better than to hold our breath for the resolution defining the mere questioning of Christian dogma, let alone Catholic dogma (why half of the media would have to face fines or punishment...). Sigh.
