Atheist Buses
The Skeptic's Dictionary Newsletter ^ | Feb 2009 | Robert T. Carroll

-- snip --

The atheist bus campaign began in England with London comedy writer Ariane Sherine and signs that read "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." Funds were collected by the British Humanist Association, and Richard Dawkins pledged to match donations up to £5,500. The ads are on some 600 buses and in many tube stations. So far only one bus driver has refused to drive his bus because of the ads.

The idea for an atheist bus campaign is now global and includes nations in Europe, Australia, North America, and South America.

Exactly! Rather believe and be wrong than not believe and be wrong. ;-)

What is it about atheists and bus riding, anyhow?

Here in Chicago I've seen bus ads for Islam, but none for atheism.

Maybe it's a question of who has money for ads in what markets. After all, most atheists aren't members of anything.

Why do they assume that believers worry?

I thought atheism was official commie dogma. In which case, I don’t understand how a Christian or any other kind of deist can be a communist.

I believe in psychological parlance, this is known as "projecting".

Perhaps we need a Christain version that says:

"It's all in his hands. Do not be anxious for anything."

Or maybe:

"I have read the last chapter, we win."

Liberal “Christians” in name only.

True born again Christian believers cannot be communists because communism is inherently anti God. The communist’s final authority is the State. The true born again Christian’s final authority is in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and God’s Holy Word, the Bible.

"You don’t have to act like a communist to believe there’s no God."

But if you're an atheist you don't have a logical reason to act like a capitalist unless you're already rich and powerful. Communism is the logical choice of those "have-nots" unconstrained by Christian principles.

Well said.

These people that are pushing atheism so hard are pure Kenites and have no idea what kind of Judgment they are bringing upon themselves.

To bad someone with money can’t put up signs “There is no Richard Dawkins. Now don’t worry and get on with your life.”

That’s what I was thinking too!

Richard: Please use Darwinian Theory to explain why humans worry about God if he doesn’t exist.

I know, I wonder the same thing, but I know Catholics who really play into the class warfare thing.

But if you're an atheist you don't have a logical reason to act like a capitalist unless you're already rich and powerful.

False. Case in point: Me. Being an atheist doesn't alter the logic of being a capitalist. Capitalism isn't a religion, and God has nothing to do with capitalism.

Communism is the logical choice of those "have-nots" unconstrained by Christian principles.

False. Communism isn't a logical choice at all, it's a choice of emotion.

There are a lot of Christians who believe Jesus was a model communist.

Don't shoot the messenger, but look around, you'll find tons of info on this.

Hedging their bets, eh?

The idea isn't to convert people who are actively hostile to atheism, but to attract fence sitters. Still a very weak message. Dawkins doesn't want to offend any agnostics or something.

Here's an unequivocal one based on the assumption that most non-believers are hiding it:

A Streetcar Named Disbelief http://friendlyatheist.com/2009/02/04/advertising-atheism-in-new-orleans/

An atheist could be someone sitting next to you in church, afraid of being ostracized by the community. Or so the authors of this ad in New Orleans are expecting.

Well then, I think they're grossly fooling themselves.
