STEYN: Sticking it to the young
The Washington Times ^ | March 16, 2009 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 03/16/2009 2:41:34 AM PDT by Scanian

Just between you, me, and the old, the late middle-aged and the early middle-aged - isn't it terrific to be able to stick it to the young? I mean, imagine how bad all this economic-type stuff would be if our kids and grandkids hadn't offered to pick up the tab.

Well, OK, they didn't exactly “offer” but they did stand around behind Barack Obama at all those campaign rallies helping him look dynamic and telegenic and earnestly chanting hopey-hopey-changey-changey. And “Yes, we can!” Which is a pretty open-ended commitment.

Are you sure you young folks will be able to pay off this massive Mount Spendmore of multi-trillion-dollar debts we've piled up on you?”Yes, we can!”

We thought you would say that! God bless the youth of America! We of the Greatest Generation, the boomers and Generation X salute you, the plucky members of the Brokest Generation, the Gloomers and Generation Y, as in “Why the hell did you old coots do this to us?”

Because, as politicians like to say, it's about “the future of all our children.” And the future of all our children is that they'll be paying off the past of all their grandparents. At 12 percent of gross domestic product, this year's deficit is the highest since World War II, and prioritizes not economic vitality but massive expansion of government. But hey, it's not our problem. As John Maynard Keynes observed, “In the long run we're all dead.”

Well, most of us will be. But not you youngsters, not for a while. So we've figured it out: You're the ultimate credit market, and the rest of us are all pre-approved!

GM is a welfare project masquerading as economic activity.

And we are picking up the tab for that one also. Almost all man-made calamities (and the greatest man-made calamaties) have been brought about by a scum-sucking, low-life, criminal-thinking, POS, lyin socialist/collectivist/gang/criminal/thug.

Oh come on. Where was Steyn when the debt doubled over the last 8 years? Government has been living beyond its means and we have been passing it along to the next generation for decades, and now all of a sudden Steyn has remorse?

I disagree. There would have been money spent, but it wouldn’t have been the massive craptastic stimulus passed simply because of the majority Dems in the Senate and they wouldn’t want to make McCain look good (in their mind because we all know he would look worse by spending it but Pelosi and Reid are morons).

Plus, I wouldn’t have feared for some stupid National Civilian Force that is being voted on tomorrow.

So don’t even try that crap with McCain not being “that different” from Obama. It won’t fly here.

McCain is about the most socialist moron (besides Spector and the two lady senators from Maine) in the Senate, but he isn’t a commie.

AND, I wouldn’t have been worrying about Russian bombers in Cuba, pissing off every ally we every had to cozy up to Iran, and sending a dreadfully embarassing “I’m a weenie” letter to Russia.

So you really want to stick by that statement that “McCain wouldn’t have been that different than Obama”?

The difference being that we who voted for Bush were shocked by how he behaved when it came to spending. Those who voted for Mr. Obama are getting just what they were promised.

They’re selling the rights to collect on our labor, like we were slaves on the auction block. They’re selling our children and grandchildren as futures contracts.

I thought that sounded familiar. :-)

I predict that it won’t be long before Obama begins to foment generational warfare and demonize the elderly, just like he has done with the wealthy vs. the poor. He will likely re-introduce the theme of former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm that the elderly have a “duty to die” as an obligation to society. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are Medicare cutbacks in health care procedures that are approved if you are beyond a certain age.

I agree Bush started the “stimulus spending” and Obama now has a blank check to spend. McCain would have had a stimulus only he may have directed it it to his political interests. McCain would have raised taxes. It is his idea to tax health benefits. The GOP is no different than the DNC. Just different special interests.

“...hope that the NEA (AKA the brainwasher) gets overthrown by the very youth its job is to corrupt.”

Perhaps the first group that will catch on that they’ve been had are the graduating Journalism majors who will have no jobs with which to pay off their thousands of dollars of student loans: “No, we can’t.”

Thank YOU very much as the originator of that quote. WORTH ANOTHER BUMP-TO-THE-TRUTH!

Oh, right. So even though the *outcome* is identical, we should blame the democrats because they didn’t lie about it first =) Face it, Reagan hugely increased the debt, Bush I hugely increased the debt, Bush II hugely increased the debt, and now Obama is going to hugely increase the debt. Anyone we elect is going to hugely increase the debt, because nobody will vote for someone that will actually decrease federal funding to their area. GOP or Dem, it doesn’t matter, for 90% of congress, if they don’t ‘bring home the bacon,’ they will not get re-elected, and someone who will will get elected instead.

Obama has committed America to spending 3.27 Trillion over the next ten years. And he has done that in his first 60 days on the job.

Bush spent like an absolute miser in comparison. And none of his spending was on vote-harvesting organizations like Acorn.

I'm glad to find this observation being spread around. We need to realize who the enemy is.

Those in power are not looking out for our best interest. To them, we're blocks of "productivity" to be traded like baseball cards, like tenancies and demesne serfs owned by medieval lords.

We are the currency in the Washington power/money game.
