Saudi Arabia has a small Shi’a minority in the eastern Al-Hasa province (where most of the oilfields are). Iran could arm them and make controlling the oil difficult for Saudi authorities.
Iran is also messing around in Yemen. There’s a Shi’a minority group called “Believing Youth” that is funded by Iran. Bahrain has a Shi’a majority but a Sunni monarchy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Iran is stirring up shi’ite there as well.
An Iranian spy network based at the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait City was busted by the Kuwaitis last summer. It was made up of Iranian laborers and Kuwaiti Shi’ites (minority in Kuwait).
Iran claims to own the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb despite Emirati claims that the UAE owns them, and has even gone so far as to set up an office on Abu Musa to control Gulf traffic.
Iran’s influence is growing in the Sunni Arab states, and that’s a sure-fire way to tick them off.
