Lawyers group targets ex-Bush administration official (for 'torture' memos)

In an attempt to win sanctions against a former top Bush administration official over brutal interrogations of prisoners at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, a lawyers group deployed a strategy Monday that worked against Presidents Nixon and Clinton.

Former Defense Department General Counsel William J. Haynes II is the first of several former policy makers the National Lawyers Guild wants reprimanded, suspended or disbarred for their roles in detainee abuse, said Carlos Villarreal, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area guild chapter that filed a complaint against Haynes with the California Bar Assn.

Haynes, now an attorney with Chevron Corp. in San Ramon, "breached his duty as a lawyer" in providing legal cover for U.S. soldiers and federal agents to use dogs, nudity, stress positions and other humiliating tactics to break down terror suspects, the guild alleged.

Haynes did not return requests for comment.

...

"It doesn't matter who you are. If you're a lawyer and you're licensed and you violate licensing standards, your licensing jurisdiction will pursue it," [deputy executive director of the CA state bar] Hawley said.

To show you how much the country's changed in eight years, the "American Taliban", John Walker Lindh's defense attorney is slated to be the number three man at justice.

I think anything is possible in the coming four years including not only the disbarment of the Bush WH, Defense and Justice attorneys. But, if Obama actually signs the International Criminal Court treaty, then we could see former administration officials tried for "war crimes". It's coming.

“Lawyers” love terrorists. Terrorists present them with all kinds of opportunities for lots of lawsuits against the airlines, builders, etc.

National Lawyers Guild

The Guild is owned lock, stock and barrel by the Communist Party. They try to hide it, but the truth will out with these reds.

Of course, Obama is continuing many of these policies, even if under the radar. So he might be a target as well.

Torture has always played a part in any war. There was a time when death played a big part in America's war responses too.

"Shortly after midnight on the morning of June 13, 1942, four men landed on a beach near Amagansett, Long Island, New York, from a German submarine, clad in German uniforms and bringing ashore enough explosives, primers, and incendiaries to support an expected two-year career in the sabotage of American defense-related production. On June 17, 1942, a similar group landed on Ponte Vedra Beach, near Jacksonville, Florida, equipped for a similar career in industrial disruption.

By June 27, 1942, all eight saboteurs had been arrested without having accomplished one act of destruction. Tried before a Military Commission, they were found guilty. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, another to thirty years, and six received the death penalty, which was carried out within a few days.

During the next several days he was thoroughly interrogated and he furnished the identities of the other saboteurs, possible locations for some, and data which would enable their more expeditious apprehension.

The three remaining members of the Long Island group were picked up in New York City on June 20. Of the Florida group, Kerling and Thiel were arrested in New York City on June 23, and Neubauer and Haupt were arrested in Chicago on June 27.

The eight were tried before a Military Commission, comprised of seven U.S. Army officers appointed by President Roosevelt, from July 8, to August 4, 1942. The trial was held in the Department of Justice Building, Washington, D.C. The prosecution was headed by Attorney General Frances Biddle and the Army Judge Advocate General, Major General Myron C. Cramer. Defense counsel included Colonel Kenneth C. Royall (later Secretary of War under President Truman) and Major Lausen H. Stone (son of Harlan Fiske Stone, the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court).

All eight were found guilty and sentenced to death. Attorney General Biddle and J. Edgar Hoover appealed to President Roosevelt to commute the sentences of Dasch and Burger. Dasch then received a 30-year sentence, and Burger received a life sentence, both to be served in a federal penitentiary. The remaining six were executed at the District of Columbia Jail on August 8, 1942."

The NLG is a notorious bunch of moonbats. Worse even than the ABA which is pretty bad.

What happened to attorney-client privilege? They want sanctions for legal advice to a client in a MEMO? Doesn’t he have free speech? The thought police are out and it is an OUTRAGE!

"What happened to attorney-client privilege?"

The jihadists at Gitmo get that. While their meetings with lawyers are monitored by camera, audio of those is not authorized. Despite written oaths to not pass on outside world news or encourage misbehavior, the result is their lawyers talk over resistance strategies, including hunger strikes, with them and freely pass on news.

Right, but unless I”m wrong wasn’t this a Justice Dept memo? It was just advise and analysis—not policy, per se!

"Of course, Obama is continuing many of these policies, even if under the radar. So he might be a target as well."

Right now, Obama has fudged on some of his campaign promises. But, I have a feeling he will eventually close Gitmo and in the process, he'll turn many of those "enemy combatants" loose on the world. The guys over at Powerlineblog.com touched on that very issue this past weekend. I have a feeling Barry will turn out to be the self-loathing American hater we all fear he is, which will play well in the international community.

I think Obama will be in good stead with the international humanitarian crowd. They'll be too busy trying to relive the Nuremberg trials with the Bushies.

The National Lawyers Guild(NLG) was organized in 1936 by a caucus of Communist Party, U.S.A.(CPUSA) lawyers assisted by the International Labor Defense, an American agency of the Comintern(Communist International).

The NLG remains an active affiliate of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers(IADL), an international Communist front which operated under the control of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The International Department took over the old Comintern that was disbanded by Stalin during World War II.

A study prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency at the direction of the House Intelligence Committee in 1978, reported that the IADL:

“has been one of the most useful Communist front organizations at the service of the Soviet Communist Party....In the 31 years of the IADL’s existence, it has so consistently demonstrated its support of Moscow’s foreign policy objectives and is so tied in with other front organizations and the Communist press that it is difficult for it to pretend that its judgments are fair or relevant to basic legal tenets.”

IADL president, Pierre Cot, an official of the World Peace Council(WPC), the principal Soviet international Communist front, was even awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1953.

In September 1950, the House Committee on Un-American Activities issued a report, “The National Lawyers Guild: Legal Bulwark of the Communist Party”, which stated:

“The real aim of the National Lawyers Guild, as demonstrated conclusively by its activities...are not specified in its constitution or statement of avowed purpose. In order to attract non-Communists to serve as a cover for its actual purpose as an appendage to the Communist Party, the National Lawyers Guild poses benevolently as ‘a professional organization which shall function as an effective social force in the service of the people....’ “
With the extensive revival of the NLG in the late 1960s and recruitment of a broad section of New Leftists who looked not to Moscow, but to the surrogate regimes of Havana, Hanoi, or Angola for models of revolutionary change, the NLG has had an increasingly close relationship with the Cuban regime. The NLG’s International Committee formed numerous subcommittees that coordinate both legal action and public relations and propaganda in support of various Soviet and Cuban-backed revolutionary terrorist movements. For example, the NLG’s Middle East subcommittee supported the Palestine Liberation Organization(PLO) and issued a blatantly biased report against Israeli legal and security measures against jailed terrorists. The NLG’s Vietnam subcommittee pressed for U.S. economic aid and “reparations” to the Hanoi government and urged recognition and support of the Vietnamese puppet state set up in Cambodia after the invasion and conquest by the North Vietnamese Army.

In 1978, a group of independent Marxists within the NLG’s membership published a document criticizing the NLG leadership for conducting “Guild affairs as though we were a committed Marxist-Leninist entity.” The NLG Democratic Caucus complained that the NLG International Committee identifies the organization “with the positions of the ‘socialist’ countries on every major international issue.” Bright fellows, those Democrat Congressmen!......but then, embarrassed ones, too!

Through their dual memberships in the American Civil Liberties Union and their activities in other Communist front organizations such as the National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee(NECLC), leading NLG activists, including those working to defend terrorist organizations such as the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional(FALN) of Puerto Rico and the Weather Underground Organization(WUO) have played the most prominent role in the myriad of lawsuits against the CIA, FBI and local intelligence organizations.

The Obamunists are engaging in a political witchhunt. Let’s start writing some plays that will be read for decades in schools.
