EVANSVILLE - An Evansville resident shot an armed burglar early Sunday morning when the suspect tried to rob the man in his home.
Derrick Murray told police that he was asleep in his house on the 400 block of east Riverside when his back door was kicked in and some one told him to get down on the ground.
Police say Murray got his rifle and shot 26-year-old Derek Clark in the leg after Clark confronted him with a handgun.
Police say Clark then ran out the door and attempted to get into an accomplice vehicle with multiple suspects. The driver then hit Clark with the vehicle and fled the scene.
When Officers responded they found Clark lying on the sidewalk. Clark was transported to St. Mary's hospital. Police say Murray acted in self-defense.
One less we have to worry about when the brownshirt army materializes....
Cool. I think it is so interesting how thieves turn on each other in a crisis. I wonder what kind of rifle it was.
Not aware of the Tucson video. . .got a link?
With the economy declining, we're going to see more and more of these incidents. Keep your powder dry.
I had my front door kicked in at 5 AM on a Sat. morn in LA. I bought a Winchester Defender .12 ga. the next day.
Murray needs a .12 ga.
With the details presented, this story does not make sense, but maybe that's intentional or I haven't had enough coffee yet.
I live in Evansville. This happened about 5 blocks from my office. Talk about irony - shot by the homeowner and then run over by your getaway car.
Agreed. I have a friend and coworker who lives 3 blocks from the site of this incident. She just bought a Mossberg 500 and I taught her how to shoot it yesterday.
Another shooting in River City.
just so you aren’t involved : )
Sometimes, the police, good as they are do not have a chance to defend you......... this is why we are armed.
I agree with the previous poster about using a shotgun instead of a rifle.
You do it by placing the loaded shotgun under your side of the bed. It's a good thing to have several weapons strategically placed in your home for quick access if the need arises.
Couldn't agree with you more, especially the pump variety but I'm just trying to picture getting to it, cycling a round while the perp is telling you to get on the ground with a handgun pointed at you.
It's probably a short version of the events and I'm nitpicking

Reporters seldom get the facts straight. That’s why news media are going out of business by the dozen. Public school grads you know.
Sometimes, the police, good as they are do not have a chance to defend you..
When seconds count, the police are 20 minutes away.
“When seconds count, the police are 20 minutes away.”
The average response time of a .357 Magnum is 1,300 feet per second.
Too bad there is no video, you’d probably win on Americas Funniest Home Videos.
“Murray got his rifle and shot 26-year-old Derek Clark in the leg”
Murray needs more range time to perfect hitting center of mass. Was the rifle a single-shot?
