Residents Face $400 In Fines For Not Recycling

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood residents could be charged up to $400 if they don't recycle.

A new law makes recycling mandatory starting July 1 for people who get municipal trash collection, NewsChannel5 reported.

If people do not separate recyclable materials, the city can charge a fee. For the first violation, it's a minimum of $50, $100 for the second offense and up to $400.

The new law authorizes the city to either charge residents a fee for city employees to separate recyclable materials or to stop trash collection to a home altogether.

An educational handbook will be sent out to residents.

Here’s your prize...

I say this with no sarcasm whatsoever: I am sure the residents of Lakewood, Ohio are quite thrilled at this development. It is, after all, the heart of Kucinich country.

My city-issued recycle bin makes a great ash receptacle(after the ashes have cooled, of course).

Do the trucks have separate bins for the different materials?

I used to live within city limits and was forced to get trash service. I am just outside now. I still get it though. If they imposed a law like this I would stop it in a New York minute.

What a bunch of loony voters. This plan is just their will being implemented. They rank right up there with the buffoon voters who are responsible for the Kelo ordeal.

Couldn't tell you, when we did city wide the trucks had separate bins but and its a big but, the guys working usually picked up the entire bin and threw on the truck without separating it

Twenty years ago I drew a cartoon depicting two uniformed women going through a garbage can. One was holding a bottle and saying, "Glass bottles, I found GLASS BOTTLES!!!" with an outraged expression on her face. The other was writing a citation for the hapless resident.

At the time, my cartoon was just an absurd extrapolation of the recycling mania taking hold in the late eighties. Today that absurdity has become reality.

And Marxism marches on.

Nothing like Jack-Booted-Thugs enforcing trash regulations...

This type of insanity has already taken root in the UK. If we don’t nip it in the bud now, the USA will soon be in the same boat.

This one is easy. Cancel trash pick-up. Find a landfill nearby and go dump your own. That is where these companies go anyway.

Why do we have recycling programs?

First, many people are sympathetic to the ‘landfill is evil’ concept.

Second, many people feel good sorting their trash because they THINK it is helping the environment.

Third, many conservatives have relented on this issue and do what they are told.

Fourth, recycling only makes sense if the revenue gained from the recycled matter exceeds the costs of separating/collecting it....of course recycling has NEVER exceeded the costs of collection alone (even if YOUR time sorting is calculated at $0 per hour).

Lastly, if recycling was profitable, it would not have to be MANDATED by gov’t.

I thank the good Lord daily that I don’t live in a “neighborhood”. I save my trash for about 6 weeks and take it to the dump. Anything that will burn (paper, boxes, etc) goes in the burning barrel in the back yard. Yep, it’s legal to burn trash in a barrel here. We don’t have garbage pickup here so almost everybody takes trash to the landfill themselves. If you go on Saturday or Sunday it only costs $2 a load. Heck, we’ve only had city water for two years. We don’t have cable TV or high speed Internet. My Internet is satellite. You couldn’t pay me to live in a subdivision or other civilized neighborhood. :-)

I got tired of the bozo goin’ through my recycle bin for aluminum cans. Now, I just flatten them out, and put them in extra garbage cans in the shed. Tomorrow, I go to the recycling place in Bedford, and get money for my three garbage cans full of flatso beer cans.

Lakewood known as the Gold Coast for its high GLBTS communities

Lakewood itself is not know as the Gold Coast. It's just "Lakewood." The section of luxury high rises right along the lake, which were built mostly in the 60s IIRC, is called the Gold Coast.

There are a number of mansions along there, too.

A steal at $1.8 million.

They are responsible for a lot of tax revenue. They are what give Lakewood its relatively high population density of almost 10,000 per square mile. GLBTS doesn't really have anything to do with the name, although there are a lot of them in Lakewood.
