"The U.S. Public Service Academy will be an undergraduate institution devoted to developing civilian leaders for the public sector. Modeled on the military academies, the Academy will offer four years of tuition-free education in exchange for five years of civilian service following graduation. Its mission will be to educate, develop, and inspire civilian leaders who have the character, intellect, and experience necessary to serve the nation honorably and effectively, and who are committed to devoting their lives to public service.

The initiative to build the Academy was launched by two Teach For America alumni in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when the American people witnessed serious failures of public leadership at all levels of government. Since it was established in early 2006, the Academy has made tremendous progress.

We have built an advisory board of more than 50 experts in public policy, education, the military, business, and non-profit. To help us draft our Blueprint, we created a Blueprint Advisory Board with more than five dozen experts in higher education, the military, and government.

In the 110th Congress, we had identical bipartisan bills before the Senate (S. 960) and the House (HR 1671), with 24 senators and 123 representatives signed on as co-sponsors. Many members of the Obama administration — including Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, and Tom Daschle — are supporters of the Academy.

The Academy has earned endorsements from prominent individuals such as Madeleine Albright, Mike Huckabee, and Sandra Day O’Connor; several dozen well-respected organizations such as America’s Promise, City Year, and Youth Service America; and more than 70 college presidents...

On local radio station call in shows along with anti fluoride rants a caller sometimes shows up on the air and spews about how their time in the Peace Corps ( for example ) should be treated just like military service with retirement and the same other benefits plus respect. The caller is almost in pain by how “unfair” it is. You only hear them on shows with a bad call screener. This is one area of moonbat thinking that you rarely hear about but it seems like the mentality behind that academy.

The sad thing is, our PUBLIC SCHOOLS should be teaching character, American history, leadership, American Government, etc. But they aren't. We should not need a 'special' school to teach civics.

Also interesting, that Katrina was not the worst disaster to ever hit the USA yet it's the reason this school is being created.

Katrina's failures rest at the feet of the governor of La., the mayor of New Orleans, and the PEOPLE of New Orleans. EVERYONE in and around New Orleans knew that if a major hurricane ever hit they would be under water. Shouldn't this school be located in Louisiana and maybe they could give lessons on self sufficiency and disaster planning?

The media and the DNC were successful in redefining President Bush's presidency from leadership after the terrorist attacks on 9/11 to failure at Katrina.

I did some fishing around and found Senate resolution introduced by Hillary Clinton in March, 2007.

Under “authorizations” it says:
“There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this Act $164,000,000 for fiscal year 2008 and each of the 5 succeeding fiscal years.”

$164 Million! Isn’t that exactly the amount of the AIG bonuses?! Kinda funny. Or not.

Students will learn how to organize street gangs into basketball teams and vice-versa. Study of life on the streets with emphasis on what to do when hit with a bicycle chain.
