You mean Specter opted for what he shouldve done in the first place

Yes, he's going to try to buck his usual, knee-jerk reaction of voting the wrong way. Like asking a dog to not drink out of the toilet, it goes against his natural instincts, so we'll see if he really can keep his tongue off the porcelain.

Specter might as well just switch over to being a democrat and take a page out of Schmuck Schumer’s book and start combing his hair with a piece of buttered toast.

If this is the case, it is only because there are already enough RINOs lined up to vote for passage already. Specter will use this as a re-election CYA vote.

He only seems to have a spine when there’s a question of him not getting reelected - like lobbying the Penn. legislature to change the law so he can run as an independent if he loses the primary.

The Sphincter cares about his own power and nothing else.

There must be a storeroom where politicians turn in their consciences.

That they would even consider this tells you how much closer we are to the Soviet model, than the American one.

I’d like to see Toomey challenge Spector again, but could he beat a dem in PA (recalling what happened to Santorum)?

We’ve heard this song before. Spectre doesn’t like this nominee, Spectre doesn’t like that nominee, Spectre doesn’t like this stimulus bill, Spectre doesn’t like that stimulus bill. It all ends the same way: Spectre gets bought off with a couple billion in pork and grandly announces that he’s reluctantly supporting said item.

“Well, of course I am,” Mr. Specter said when asked if he’s worried about the conservative backlash. “But (President) John Kennedy had it right. He said, ‘Sometimes the party asks too much.’ And this is something I think is necessary for the country. It goes beyond politics. It goes beyond the Democratic or Republican position. It’s the right thing for America.”

Mr. Specter said he would have supported the package even if Democrats had not added $6.5 billion in additional money for the National Institutes of Health to the final version of the bill.

Mr. Specter had sought the money for years, and had mentioned that he wanted the money in the bill when he met with President Barack Obama last week.

“That’s only one small part ... That’s not determinative in my mind,” he said.

The stimulus vote could create “a political problem,” he said, but “I thought the public interest was so important that I have to take whatever problems it brings me.”

Hard to say. 2006 was a bad year for Republicans nationwide, but Penn is so far gone it’s tough to say.

Can hearts and minds be changed? If your answer is “yes”, then Toomey can win.

Hey, you’re back! Awesome!

Congratulations on your fine work with grass-roots conservatives in PA. I’m sure you’ll be quite busy with Pat Toomey taking on Specter in the GOP Senate primary once again-—and on to victory in 2010.

Anything you need, let me know.

“Hard to say. 2006 was a bad year for Republicans nationwide, but Penn is so far gone it’s tough to say.”

PA gave President Bush 46% in 2000 and 48% in 2004. McCain dropped to 44% in 2008, but the GOP presidential drop-off of 4% was a bit less than the national drop-off of 5%.

So, yes, a conservative Republican can win an open-seat Senate race in PA, especially in 2010 (when the governorship is also open and there is no presidential election). Economic and social conservative Pat Toomey can unite all wings of the GOP and attract enough socially conservative Democrats (perhaps the largest voting block in PA) to win the race.

You may be right, but not necessarily. The Republican nominee needs to be at least somewhat populist on economic issues. Pat Toomey’s support for Free Trade is a negative, and he’s not great on illegal aliens, either.

I’m of the opinion that Joe Hoeffel was an uninspiring candidate and that Toomey would have bested him had he won the primary last time.

He can certainly win this time. Rendell would likley beat him or Specter but it doesn’t look like he’ll run. PA is certainly not “too far gone” in the least.

2010 is not 2006 and Toomey won’t be running against Casey. Being pro-life will win a rat many votes in PA (though Santorum beat a weak pro-life rat (Congressman Klink) in 2000 ))) like Casey JR. (allegedly) in 2006. The terrible year 2006 and Casey popularity is what sunk Santorum.

The old fart seems to vote his conscience, maybe he really is against it (at this time at least). Or maybe he knows such a vote would majorly hamper his primary chances.
